when one listens to O P Nayyar’s music, one often may find his music sounding same. But when one frees one’s mind of such pre conceived notions (viz. different compositions of a music composer needs to sound different from each other), one can enjoy music the best. And in case of O P Nayyar’s music, one should listen to the music and enjoy the indescribable quality of enjoyment that these compositions bring. This quality cannot be taught/ learnt/passed on to future generations. It was a quality that went into oblivion with O P Nayyar. And we need to savour the legacy that O P Nayyar has left behind.
Take this song from “Mere Sanam” (1965) for example. Superficially, this song may sound similar to many other O P Nayyar compositions. But the resemblence is only skin deep. This song is a fantastic song to listen to. this song is sheer magic. It is like a perfect recipe cooked up by the music of O P Nayyar, lyrics of Majrooh Sultanpuri and singing of Rafi. It all many seem simple, but then most creations of genius look effortless on the surface but are impossible to replicate. This song is that kind of a song.
This song is picturised as a boat song cum romantic song on Vishwajeet and Asha Parekh. asha jee plays the usual “not amused by this public display of love” damsel, who begins to soften as the song progresses.

I am visiting this page in 2025 after listening to this song on Vividh Bharati. Have heard this countless times before and wanted to check the lyrics. As you so rightly said – On the surface looks similar to other songs but has its own magic. OPN’s music is greatly enhanced by Rafi saab’s rendition. Great song. Made greater by the way Rafi saab sings — “Oh ho ho”. Simply brilliant when you hear with ears and heart
