While Helen rules the roost as the phenomena of the dance number in Hindi films, there came a phase in the 1960s and 70s, when a number of contenders stepped in to the arena of dance item exponents. As the dance number became progressively an important ingredient of the formula, especially a cabaret, and then especially in the ‘cloak and dagger’ type of films, the demand for dance item experts increased. To fill in a void that was probably beyond the bandwidth of Helen’s availability, the opportunities were taken up by actresses whose names became synonymous with sizzling dance numbers on the screen, and they made a place for themselves in the B/C grade films. The leaders in this group of actresses are Bela Bose, Faryaal, Lakshmi Chhaayaa, and JaishreeT. In their own right, these dancers have carved out a niche in the annals of Hindi films dance item.

Jaishree T started her career in the mid 60s as a supporting actress / comedienne alongside the likes of Mehmood and Jagdeep. However, she soon transitioned into the role of a dance item expert, and for almost a decade she was type cast as a cabaret dancer. She almost won a Filmfare award once, for best supporting actress – being nominated for her role in Resham Ki Dori (1975), but then lost out to the veteran actress Durga Khote for that year. Jaishree T still continues to appear in films as a character artist, now in senior roles.

Nateeja (1969) is a film produced by Jugal Kishore, under the banner of Jugal Productions, Bombay and is directed by Rajesh Nanda. The star line up for this film includes Vinod Khanna, Bindu, KN Singh, Jaishree T, Mehmood Junior, Satish etc. The lyrics of this film are written by Asad Bhopli and Salim Saagar, and the music is composed by Usha Khanna. This particular song is written by Salim Saagar. The following is a brief synopsis of this film, adapted from the comments of Arun ji Deshmukh, our in house expert on films of the yesteryears.

NATEEJA (1969) was a Jugal production film produced by Jugal kishore and as was his wont, he also acted in this film in an important role. Vinod Khanna is a habitual thief and steals own wife’s jewellery on wedding night and runs away. Bindu comes to Bombay searching for him and is waylaid by goons of Ranjit (KNSingh) – Vinod’s boss. At that time Kishore (Jugal Kishore) and an orphan Mehmood (Jr.Mehmood) step in and save her. Bindu recognizes Kishore as her long lost brother and tells him her story. Kishore assures her and they convert Bindu into an ultra-modern girl in few days. After being released from jail, Vinod meets and falls in Bindu’s love wanting to marry her. Kishore reveals her true identity. But now Ranjit also wants Bindu. He murders Kishore and Vinod is arrested and sentenced 7 yr’s jail. He escapes and takes his revenge, exposes Ranjit and lives happily and straight with Bindu for ever.

This song is wonderful example of cabaret dancing. The situation appears to be a restaurant or a den of gangsters. There are gambling tables etc. and a bar. A ruffian looking Vinod Khanna is seated at the bar, as this song starts. Keeping him company is Jugal Kishore, who is intent on “saving” him (Vinod Khanna) from the clutches of the dancing siren who seems to have her eyes on him. The words of the song tell the tale of an indifferent lover who is ignoring the messages and salutations of the beloved. The more she tries to engage his attention, the more he disregards her advances.

The words of Salim Saagar are threaded with a stunning melody by Usha Khanna. The singing voice is that of Hemlata, one of the many new singers in the 60s and 70s, who got a lot of support from Usha Khanna. The on screen performance by Jaishree T is a sizzling display of calisthenics and sensuality, that was to become the hallmark of this dance actress. A wonderful example of a dance item, done extremely well in all aspects – lyrics, music, singing, and on screen performance.

iss adaa se salaam. . . letey hain
jaise kuchh inteqaam. . . letey hain
hum mohabbat se naam. . . letey hain
wo to nafrat se kaam. . . letey hain

My beloved acknowledges my greetings and salutations, as if taking revenge on an adversary
I try to approach him, and call him with love, and he responds only with extreme dislike

saamne ho ke bhi hum se miltey nahin
dost dushman ki tarah to jaltey nahin
kaun saa wo muqaam. . . letey hain

He refuses to acknowledge me, even though we are face to face
Friends are not expected to be resentful like an enemy
(I am unable to comprehend) What is objective he is trying to accomplish

yoon nigaahe na phero khudaa ki qasam
zindagi pe karo aaj thhoda karam
hum kalejey ko thhaam. . . letey hain

I implore in the name of God, please do not look away from me
Please have some compassion on me, on my life
I am restraining my heart with difficulty, (else it would be the end of me)

log ulfat mein bantey hain deewaar kyun
do dilon se ye jaltaa hai sansaar kyun
kyun jafaa’on se kaam. . . letey hain

Oh why does this world always try to impede the path of love
Oh why does this world begrudge two hearts in love
Always, this world tries to defeat love with hatred, Oh why is it so. . .
