Raat kitni haseen zindagi meharbaan

Posted on: May 15, 2012

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

A wonderful lost melody from another lesser known obscure film. This lovely song is from the 1956 film ‘Baadal Aur Bijli’. Another film, about which I have no information other than the contents of Geet Kosh. It is a stunt film produced under the banner of Artists United, Bombay. The producers of this film are Fore X-Maurice, Akbar, Asgar and Haider. (Now if that is not a very strange name combination, then what is?? 🙂 ). And the directors name is listed as Maurice, supposedly the first name in the producers list also. The star cast of this film includes Kumar, Ameeta, Yashodhara, Manorama, Hira Sawant, Manhar, Anwar, Sheikh, Rajan Haksar, Habib, Amrit Rana, Yashwant Raj, Ravi, Hanuman, Azim etc.

And the wonder is to listen to the lovely words and melody, and then try to think of its creators. The poetical verses are by Anjum Jaipuri, and the music is by the duo of Bipin-Baabul. This duo of Bipin Dutta and Baabul together prepared music for a handful of films, and yet, this small treasure stands out as a hallmark of genius compositions. The singing voices are those of Talat Mehmood and Mubarak Begum. The melody is soft with a lilting rhythm that is just so pleasing to the ears and to the heart. A conversation between two hearts in love, two hearts completely given over to each other. This gem of a song is a long lost favorite of mine that I rediscovered recently some days back.

raat kitni haseen, zindagi meharbaan
baat kuchh bhi nahin, ban gayeen daastaan

This night, o so lovely
And this life, it is kind and generous (to us)
The matter (of the heart)
Seems to be so tiny
But still, it turns itself into a legend

dil dhadakne lagaa pyaar ki raah mein
lutf aaney lagaa dard mein aah mein
aaj har cheez ko mil gayee hai zubaan

The heart
It beats out the rhythm
For the passages of love
And a strange delight is ensconced
In this pain and these sighs (of love)
It is, as if
Every lifeless thing has found a voice to speak

koi aankhon mein le ke bahaar aa gayaa
dil ki bechain’ion ko qaraar aa gayaa
do dilon ne banaa hi liyaa aashiaan

Someone now resides in my eyes
Like the joyful visions of spring
And the restless heart now finds succor
The two hearts, together
Have found the place, and love
To make their nest

muskuraa tujh ko teri hansi ki kasam
Smile, o my lovely
I beseech you in the name of your smile itself

tere kadmon mien hai meri duniya sanam
de rahe hain gawaahee zameen aasmaan

O my love
My entire world, my everything
Is at your feet
This earth, and this sky
Are the willing witnesses to it

Sudhir ji,
This film Baadal aur Bijli was earlier known as ‘Amar Jyoti’,but since there was one famous Amar Jyoti already existing, the name was changed to Badal aur Bijli. The film was nothing to write home about, but there was KUMAR in the film.
This actor Kumar may not be known to most people .
KUMAR’s real name was Syed Ali Hasan Zaidi or Mir Mujjan(his parents used to call him by this name). How he became KUMAR is a story by itself.
KUMAR was the Hero of the famous film of the 30s Pooran Bhagat-1933.When the film was completed and was about to be released, communal riots errupted in Calcutta.Under the circumstances prevavailing,it was risky to declare that the Hero of the film was a Muslim.Kumar Debaki Bose, who hailed from a royal family himself and was the director of the film, called him and said” from today I give you a prtion of my name-Kumar.” True to his spirit Debaki Bose never ever used the name Kumar again for himself. Thus Mir Mujjan came to be known as Kumar.
He started his career as a Hero and continued as such till he was 40 yrs of age.He switched over to character roles from Najma-43 and worked in Dayera, khiladi,Maalik Mahal,Baiju Bawra, mughaleazam etc.His last film was ‘Raat aur Din’
Kumar worked in Ranjit. In 1942,he was removed from Ranjit.Same time his friend Chandramohan also left Minerva(for not getting a pay rise despite Pukar being a Hit film). They decided to start a company and established ‘Silver Films’ on 16-3-1942.Their first film was Jhankaar.
India’s First “MIss India” in 1947 was Pramila-a famous actress(A jew by birth-Esther Abraham) and she married Kumar. They had a daughter
Naqi Jahan, who also was “Miss India” in 1967-exactly after 20 years.Naqi had acted in some films too.
In 1963,Kumar migrated to Pakistan alone.

Maurice, Akbar, Asgar and Haider are kumar and pramila’s sons…This clearly indicates that the movie ‘Badal aur Bijli’ was produced by Kumar and Pramila…Hyder is the one who wrote the movie Jodha Akbar and also, the song ‘khwaja mere khwaja’ from this movie is pictured on him.
