June 9, 2012 is the birth centenary of the music director Vasant Desai whom I regard as a man who worked in Hindi film industry on his own terms without being a part of the rate race among his contemporary music directors. Being a devotee of the traditional music, he did not succumb to the lure of money in composing music for mass appeal.

“Jaao Kahin Bhi Sanam, Tumhen Itni Kasam, Hamen Yaad Rakhnaa” .

Words that are pretentious and pre-sentimental. A song from the 1961 film ‘Zabak’, performed on screen by Shyama and Mahipal; a song that has become a perennial favorite across generations. And its heroine, flying at the heights of popularity at that time. Little was she aware that it was just about the peak she would be at, and then, the old order would change and the new players will come on.

It was a farmaish from Prakash ji that was pending for some time. This is a gem of a duet rendered by Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur. The lyrics for this film are penned by Indeevar and Gulshan Baawra. The YouTube post identifies the lyricist as Gulshan Baawra.

This blog discusses Hindi movie songs from its beginning (1931) onwards though majority of songs discussed in the blog are from late 1940s to late 1970s, which is a period that is often regarded as the golden era of Hindi movie music. This song under discussion is from the film “Birha ki Raat”(1950). Another song I discussed from this film the other day “bahut purdard hai aye sunnewaale”” starts with the sh’er :

jahaan mein jin ki ummeedon ke bede
paar hote hain
woh khush qismat hazaaron mein kahin
do chaar hote hain

‘Beda paar lagaana’ is a saying in hindi/urdu meaning ‘achieving the ambition or reaching ones destination. The word ‘Beda’ literally means a “Fleet of big ships”. The opposite of this saying in a curse “Beda garq ho teraa” or a lament “beda garq hogayaa”. “Garq’ is drowning in water. The special thing about these sayings or muhaavra’s which are used in urdu/hindi, is that they can be used backwards, forwards, in singular/plural,past/present tense, negative/positive and in varied situation they can be applied.
