Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

O jhumke waali ho

Posted on: August 22, 2012

We did not have any anniversaries of movie personalities for the last one day. That state of affair cannot continue of course. 🙂 With so many movies and so many songs over the last eight decades featuring thousands of artists, a few annivesaries are bound to be there on most of the days of the year.

Today is the birth anniversary of Paintal. Paintal who, many people may say. He would play bit roles in Hindi movies in 1970s, mostly as hero’s sidekick.

Paintal may not have been a celebrity in the Bombay movie studios, but ask people of Ranchi. I recall that Paintal and Mukri had once arrived at Ranchi in 1970s. A huge crowd of people had gathered to have a glimpse of them. 🙂 They were no big deal in Hindi movies, I told my acquaintances, but my acquintances, low brow that they were to my mind, would not listen to me and would go and join the crowd trying to see Paintal and Mukri. 🙂

Paintal has figured in a few Hindi movie songs, but I was not aware that he had figured in THIS song. This song is one which was reasonably popular during its time because of its funny lyrics. I never came to know about the details of this song and forgot all about the song as the song stopped playing after the movie had its initial run. And needless to mention that I had not watched this movie.

Prakashchandra, who sent me the lyrics of this song on the occasion of Paintal’s birthday anniversary had obviously seen this movie and was aware about the deatils of this song. Now thanks to him I have come to know about the deatils of this song, some 36 years later. This fun song, which is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle, is from “Baalika Badhu” (1976). The song is picturised as a roadside tamasha song on Paintal and Prema Narayan, with others like Sachin, Rajni Sharma,Kajri,Asrani,Leela Mishra,Urmila Bhatt watching their performance.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

Here is this wonderful song which brings back memories of 1970s when I would love to listen to this song whenever this song came on air. This was one song which I would have liked to listen to more often, but those were the days of Radio and loudspeakers and these sources of music soon stopped playing the song.

Now that I am aware of this song again, this time we are in a position to savour this song better informed and any time we feel like.

Here is this wonderful song from “Baalika Badhu” (1976). And many happy returns of the day to Paintal.

Happy b’day to Paintlalji…you always make us feel…”paisa vasool”… when movie is not so great 🙂
I never heard of this film…until 5 years ago…and I watched on Rajsri web site…Even this movie came out in later part of 70’s, this movie reminds me of “swinging sixties-my college years” .
I would like to compare this film with Devdas (1955) Both are Bengali stories, the street singers/dancers just walk into varandah, the setting of the story, even direcotrs are not same as Devdas but the locations of shootings, landmarks are so parallel to each other.Than RDB using same music rhythm that SDB used in Devdas.
you keep thinking back in the mind..Am I watching Devdas?…
