Hamaar kahaa maano raja jee
Posted September 5, 2012
on:Today (5 september) is the death anniversary of D D Kashyap (1910- 5 september 1988).
D D Kashyap who ? I thought the same way when I found his name in the list of september anniversaries that Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh had sent to me. He sends me the list of anniversaries for a month regularly and the list is extremely useful for me while planning to discuss songs for the various days.
D D Kashyap was a major Producer, director and screenplay writer of the golden era. He was active from 1940s to 1960s. He was producer and director of “Badi Behan”(1949) and “Shama Parwana”(1954). He also directed “Kamal Ke Phool”(1950), “Aaraam” (1951),”Do Sitaare”(1951), “Badnaam”(1952), “Naya Ghar” (1953),”Halaaku”(1956),”Anbaan” (1956), “Maaya”(1961), “Dulhan Ek Raat ki”(1966) etc.
D D Kashyap wrote and directed “Dulhan Ek Raat Ki”(1966). This movie is almost synonymous with the song Ek haseen shaam ko dil mera kho gayaa . But that is not the only nice song in this movie. I have in fact discussed as many as six songs from this movie.
Here is another song from this movie. This rare song is an all female duet which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Usha Mangeshkar. The song is picturised as a synchonised dance performance by Helen and Laxmi Chhaaya. Dharmendra and Nutan are the guests of honour who watch this dance performance.
Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Madan Mohan.
IMDB describes 5 may 1988 as the date of his death, but that is inaccurate. Harmandir Singh Hamraj’s Listener’s bulletin number 76(a reliable and regular publication on such matters) published in februray 1989 records 5 september 1988 as D D Kashyap’s date of death.

As far as I remember, DD Kashyap had also played the role of Gandhiji in famous English movie ‘Nine hours to Rama’, which was banned in India.

Nayan ji,
Casshyap who played Gandhi ji in this film was a different person, and NOT D.D.Kashyap.
His name was J.N.CASSHYAP.
Here is a link of credits of “Nine hours to Rama”.This film is available on UT freely.

Atul ji,
Here is some more info about DHARAM DEV KASHYAP aka D.D.Kashyap.
He was born in 1910 at Jalalpur in UP(now uttar Pradesh, but earlier called United Province),in a middle class family without any connection to films or music. When DD came to the college in Lucknow,he was awed by the silent movies.By 1931 the Talkie started and he decided films as his career.he knew that it is only Bombay that can extend opportunities to him.Reaching Bombay,he labouriously worked up his way, doing menial jobs on the way,to the V.Shantaram camp.He was a learned man with a flair for writing, hence he got a chance to become an assitant to Munshi Aziz, while writing dialogues for AADMI-1939.(I checked the credits of Aadmi and truely his name features in the list of assistants,in the Dialogues section.)I can only imagine how he must have felt then.
Looking at his enthusiasm, Shantaram promoted him as one of his asst.Directors in PADOSI-1941.He even did a cameo role of OMKAR in Padosi.
Now he had enough experience and his first film as a Director was NAI KAHANI-1943.Then came a series of films,Chand,Nargis,Aaj ki Raat, pyar ki Jeet,Badi Behan,Kamal ke phool,Aaram,Do sitare, badnam,Naya Ghar,Shama Parwana,Aan baan,Halaku,Maya(Dev Anand film),and Dulhan ek raat ki-67.
he has also written the story of 10 o’clock-58.
He was an actor,writer,s/play writer, dialogue writer, producer as well.
Actually he produced Badi behan-a hit film,Aaram-another hit and Shama Parwana.
He died on 5-9-1988,at Bombay.
