Today (30 september) is the 22nd death anniversary of Shankar Nag (9 November 1954 – 30 September 1990). He died at the age of just 36 but he had already achieved a lot in his young age.

Shankar Nag, younger brother of actor Anant Nag, was a well known actor and director in Kannada movies before he moved on to direct Hindi movies. Then he undertook the direction of a Hindi television serial for national audience. The movie had Vinod Mehra, Bindiya Goswami, Anant Naag, Pran, Ranjeet, Jagdeep, Harbans Darshan. M Arora, Kajal Kiran, Heena Kauser, Brahmachari, Pannu, Coca Cola, Kartik Dutta,
Afeef, Panditji, Master Vicky, Chhotu Merchant, Jamura, Titu, Gurcharan, Raju, Bittu, Chandrashekhar etc in it.

Here is a duet from this movie. It is sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata and it is picturised on Vinod Mehra and Bindiya Goswami.

Anjaan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

Thank you Atulji for the posting.
Thank you very very very…… much.

Shankar nag was ahead of his time. He started a recording studio named “Sanket” and directed many experimental movies in Kannada and also starred in commercial Kannada Movies. If you remember he was there in a cameo role in Shashi kapoor`s Utsav also with Neena Gupta.

He helped many budding artistes, technicians to get a foothold in film industry.

He was very down to earth human being without any starry airs.

He started a resort type courntry club in Bangalore and got many creative ideas, but passed away before realising many of his dreams.

On his way to the muhurt of movie Naagmandala(Based on a famous folklore story by Girish karnaad)he met with an accident and died a tragic death.

In his memory his wife Arundhati nag built a famous Play theatre namely “Ranga Shankara”(which helps budding theatre artistes to showcase their talents)

In fact original kannada movie of this hindi version “Minchina Ota” won many critical acclaim starring the two brothers Anant & shankar nag. This movie is about 3 criminals who escape from jail.

But here in Karnataka, we remember him fondly and miss him very much. Thank you for paying a tribute through our blog. So sweet of you.

Regards and love you more for this gesture

PCji, I hope you have read “nanna tamma shankara” by Ananth Nag. It is a lovely book which mainly narrates the lives of two brothers. It brought tears to my eyes. They shared a super lovely bonding. Read it if you havent.

For the benefiit of others (PCji would know for sure and other Kannadigas also would know) that he planned Metro Rail for Bangalore in 80s, he was ways ahead of time. He planned low cost houses for people with low income, had planned ropeway to a famous hill close to Bangalore called Nandi HIlls and many more such projects were planned by him. He not only did plannig, met government officials, tried to convince them incessantly also. Had even constructed a model house (from his money probably). He is said to sleep for only 4-5 hours everyday, such was his enthisiasm for life. Unfortunately, he died before he could achieve many of his dreams.

It is heart warming to see many autorickshaw drivers sporting his pictures on their vehicles. Such is his charisma 🙂

Aparna ji

Thank you for writing in detail about OUR Shankar Nag. That is so informative.
Main Itni achchee taraha se likh nahin pataa thaa.

Thank you again, for capturing his work in a few lines.

Yes, I do have a copy of Anant Nag written book “Nanna tamma Shankara”,
Our entire family members are admirers of Anant & Shankar Nag.I am yet to read that book leisurely eventhough once, I browsed through the book. I fear it makes me still sad thinking about Shankar Nag. Gem of a man, we have lost him.

Shankar nag & Smita Patil`s demise always haunt me,on a regular basis, eventhough I know them only through their screen appearances.

PCji, aap mujhe sharminda kar rahe hai, I have written well and informatively?? One of my friends who is no more was utterly crazy about him and that is how I came to know. But you know, you people, all of you who write regularly on the blog know so much about Hindi movies that I am nothing but a bachhi.

Aparnaji I only contribute lyrics written by famous Lyricists. 🙂

Aapki likhaawat ki khoobee hum jaan paate hain, jo padthe hain, eventhough you don`t know that.

Everyone can not write and communicate the things effectively as done by you. Really I mean it and I found your sentences informative and very good.

Believe me.
