Hindi movies of the earlier decades had a few sporadic songs dealing with Mahatma Gandhi, but such songs had become scarce and unfashionable in the last few decades. In fact people used to believe that Mahatma Gandhi himself was unfashionable with the modern generation.
All that changed dramatically in 2006, when “Lage Raho Munna Bhai” (2006) was released. This movie presented the teaching of Mahatma Gandhi in a simple and entertaining manner which every one could understand and identify with. One can say that this movie broought Mahatma Gandhi from the drab textbooks to the forefront of common people’s consciousness.
This movie in fact coined a new word to the lexicon, viz, “Gaandhigiri”. I am not a big fan of modern movies and I had not seen a single movie in this millenium. But I went and watched this movie. The movie exceeded all my expectations. So much so that I went to watch this movie again a few days later.
I was not the only one to be influence by this movie. This movie became the only Indian movie to be shown at the UN for its message of peace and non-violence.
I have provided the video of this song, but the audio here leaves something to be desired. The audio of this song is also available which uses some stills from Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” (1982). Listening to this song from “Lage Raho Munna Bhai” (2006) while watching stills from “Gandhi” (1982) is a great and moving experience.
I have also included a wonderful clip from “Lage Raho Munna Bhai” (2006) which demonstrates Gandhigiri in an entertaining and moving manner.
This song is sung by Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal and Panab Biswas. Swanand Kirkire wrote the lyrics. Music is composed by Shantanu Moitra.
The song earned Swanand Kirkire the national award for best lyrics.

@ Peevesie – Thank you very much for this nice post ! Yes, bande mein thha dam , today’s generations and coming generations would not believe rather cannot even imagine what Gandhiji have suffered and done for this country.
@Atul ji – Thanks for the beautiful write up.
The one who allowed Indian soldiers to get slaughtered fighting on behalf of the British…
The one who asked Sardar to withdraw his nomination in favor of Nehru even when the vote was 11-1 in favor of Sardar…
It can be a long list. I really dont know what to make of the ‘Mahatma’…His family didnt use his name to rule/screw India for more than a half century…so i will give that to him…..but i have mixed feelings……
My ancestral home was right front of Gandhiji house. I played in same street where once Gandhiji might have played.
Muhammad ali Jinnah was from same town where my mom grew up
His father (poonjabhai) was in cotton business and my nana was doing colors and block prints on cotton (malmal), so they did some business together. During that time they used to do color to turbans and block print to sari. Even today Jinnah only daughter (Dina) is in cotton business.
Firoz Gandhi (not real last name), Parveen Babi and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto all from Junagadh, all khoja, same town of Jinnah.
They are not Muslim but Vora (khoja)…the khoja is peaceful community.
To day khoja community mostly doing embroidery work…and I always get it done my embroidery work from Junagadh.
Well, gandhiji’s wife name was Kasturba and my nani name was Kasturba too 🙂
