In India too BOMBAY was a Mayanagari for those who thought that life was beautiful and enjoyable there and that every happiness is available here. Millions of people came to Bombay with dreams in their eyes, but not all were able to fulfil their Dreams. Very few- the lucky and fortunate ones- could achieve their goals in life here.

The selection is very interesting and endearing. “Taqdeer” (1967) was a nice movie which was produced by Rajshree Productions and directed by A Salaam. The movie had Bharat Bhushan, Shalini, Kamal Kapoor, Farida Jalal, Kajal, Sushil, Jalal Agha, Ajay, Dinesh, Dilip Dutt, Champakala, Subhash Ghai etc in it.

“Raj Tilak”(1958) was a Gemini Combines production. It was directed by S S Vasan. The movie had Shivaji Ganeshan, Vyjyanti Mala, Padmini, Lalita Pawar, Durga Khote, Bipin Gupta, Master Romi, Pran, Jagirdar, Meenakshi, Manmohan Krishna, Kumar, Agha, Shammi etc in it.

I am told that a section of movie watchers in the past were addicted to melancholism the same way some people are addicted to alcoholism. They would watch sad melancholic movies and come out of the movie hall immensely satisfied after shedding bucketful of tears during their stay in the movie hall.

When I was in school, I did not see a single movie in a movie hall for six years. It was more by compulsion rather than by choice, of course. My elders would neither go to movie halls themselves nor take me. Watching movies spoil children and their future would be spoilt for ever- that was the rationalisation they gave to everyone who would listen. And my movie deprivation era (1972- 1978) were the prime era for Hindi movie watchers. 🙂
