Keh doon tumhen kyaa chup rahoon

Posted on: March 18, 2013

“Deewaar” (1975) must be regarded as one of the most influential movies of its time. Unlike most Hindi movies, the music of this movie only had a marginal role to play in the success of the movie. In fact no song of this movie figured in the Binaca geetmala finals.

It does not mean that the songs of this movie were not good. The music of this movie was composed by R D Burman who was the top music director of those days and who could do no wrong in that decade. The songs of his movies were quite popular those days. It just happened that the songs of his other movies, viz.”Aandhi”, “Ajnabi”, “Khushboo”, “Zehreela Insaan”, “Sholay”, “Benaam” and “Warrant” were more popular that the songs of “Deewaar”. Then there were music directors other than R D Burman whose songs had become quite popular. These movies being “Roti kapda Aur Makaan”, “Prem Kahaani”,”Bidaai”, “Roti”,”Aakraman”, (All Laxmikant Pyarelal movies), “Julie”, “Kunwaara Baap” (Rajesh Roshan), “Haath ki safaai”, “Dharmatma” (Kalyanji Anandji), “Amaanush” (Shyamal Mitra), “Rajnigandha” (Salil Chaudhary), “Zakhmee” (Bappi Lahiri), “Sanyasi” (Shankar Jaikishan) were more popular in those days.

The songs of “Deewaar” on their own were quite nice to listen to and they have retained their popularity even today.

Curiously enough, only one song from “Deewaar” (1975) figures in the blog. That one song was posted in the blog on 18 march 2012, viz exactly one year ago and the occasion was Shashi kapoor’s 74th birthday. Today is once again Shashi Kapoor’s birthday (his 75th this time). On this occasion, here is one more Kishore Kumar- Asha Bhonsle duet from “Deewaar” (1975). This song is picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Peevesie’s mom.

Song-Keh doon tumhe kyaa chup rahoon (Deewaar)(1975) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics(Provided by Peevesie’s mom)

Keh doon tumhe
Haan
ya chup rahoon
Na
Dil mein mere aaj kya hai
kya hai?

keh doon tumhe
ya chup rahoon
dil mein mere aaj kya hai
jo bolo toh janoon
guru tumko manoon
chalo yeh bhi waada hai
achcha
kehe doon tumhe
ya chup rahoon
dil mein mere aaj kya hai
jo bolo toh janoon
guru tumko manoon
chalo yeh bhi waada hai

socha hai tumne ke chalte hi jaayen
taaron se aage koi duniya basaayen
theek hai

aahaan
toh tum bataao
batoon
haan
socha hain yeh ke tumhe rasta bhulaayen
sooni jagah pe kahin chheden daraayen
haay re na na
haay re na na
yeh na karna
are nahin re nahin re nahin re nahin re nahin re nahin re nahin re
nahin nahin

kehe doon tumhen
ya chup rahoon
dil main mere aaj kya hai
jo bolo toh janoon
guru tumko manoon
chalo yeh bhi waada hai

socha hai tumne ke kuchh gungunaayen
masti mein jhoomen zara dhoomen machaayen
ab theek hai

mmhm
toh tum bataao na
bataoon
haaan
socha yeh ke tumhen nazdeek laayen
phoolon se hothon ki laali churaayen
haay re na na
haay re na na yeh na karna
arrre nahin re nahin re nahin re nahin re nahin re nahin re nahin re
nahin nahin

keh doon tumhe
ya chup rahoon
dil main mere aaj kya hai
jo bolo toh janoon
guru tumko maanoon
chalo yeh bhi waada hai
keh doon tumhe ( la lala )
ya chup rahoon ( la la la )
dil mein mere aaj kya hai ( la lala la lala)
jo bolo toh janoon ( la la lala )
guru tumko manoon ( lalalal lala)
chalo yeh bhi waada hai ( lalala lala)

Peevesie’s Mom ji

Thanks for posting this lilting melody, a very precious reminder.

A side observation – the extending generations of the Kapoor family across the years, also brought in a strange circumstance. Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor ended up courting on-screen, their future daughters-in-law. Shammi opposite to Babita, and Shashi opposite to both Babita and Neetu Singh.

hullo Atul
thanks for the nice write up to accompany this song.
hullo Harveypam, actually this song is noit that forgotten, i will relate what happened yesterday.
all FM channels were going Hey its Shashi Kapoor’s birthday & we shd play shashi Kapoor songs. and they were taking requests too. so i just happened to get through to one of the FM stations & put in a request for 2 SK songs, one of which was this one & the other the LORI from “Mukti”. and the channel says “let us see if we have such old song in our Library “. and then they gave me an option to choose from 2 other songs of “SHAAN”. and to think that all these movies were in and around 77- 80. last year too i had a similar experience with the same channel. at that time they offered song of Namak Halal also as an option.
just goes to show how far popular channels go for vintage. and by the way according to these channels R D Burman is the only old time MD they can think of. 🙂
howzatt!!!!!!

*clutching my head*
If R D Burman is old time, what is Naushad? Ancient?
Saraswati Devi? Pre-historic?

i am sure the only thing these FM channels know of Naushad is Baiju Bawra I suppose but I am sure they will not have it in their library
