Haay chilman ka gir jaana

Posted on: May 19, 2013

I love to liken the journey of this blog to a non stop long distance travel by road. As long as the vehicle and the road are working smoothly, one tends to pass milestones after milestones in no time. It is only when one is forced to push the brake down that one realises how fast one was travelling !

This blog has been going on and on, and with time the blog had settled down into a cruising speed of around 16-17 days per 100 songs. The previous century took 14 days and I was planning to maintain this rate for the next centuries too. I was on course for my plan and by that account the 8100th song should have arrived one week ago, viz on 12 may 2013. But I got slowed down just before that date, and I hit roadblocks after roadblocks, with the result that I was unable to post more than one or two songs for much of the last one week. There were several reasons for that. However, I seem to be getting back on track again.

And with that, now I have been able to achieve yet another century for the blog. Yes, this song is the 8100th song of the blog. this century has taken me 21 days instead of 14 days.

This 8100th song is a special song as befits a century song of the blog. This song is from “Sharaarat” (1972). This movie was produced by Ratan Mohan and directed by Manmohan Desai. The movie had Biswajeet, Mumtaz, Shatrughan Sinha, Faryal, Sujit Kumar, Durga Khote, Bindu, Mehmood Junior, Madhumati etc in it.

The movie had seven songs in it. As many as six songs from this movie have already been discussed in the past. This movie had music by my favourite music director Ganesh. The songs of this movie are so outstanding that I chose two of them to be century songs of the blog in the past.

Jaane jigar tu hai haseen was the 1900th song of the blog while the song Dil ki lagi aisi re aahen bharoon tere pyaar mein was the 2500th song of the blog. And other songs of this blog includes the fabulous Dil ne pyaar kiyaa hai ik bewafaa se .

This movie was the only occasion when Ganesh got the opportunity to compose for an A grade movie. And he did a wonderful job. It is too bad that he was unable to get too many big assignments after this movie.

This song in fact features artists who failed to shine brighter in Hindi movies. Forinstance, this song, which is sung by Asha Bhonsle was picturised on faryal. People who lived in that era would recall that the name Faryal those days was synonymous to an opportunity squanderer. For instance, “Rekha is going the Faryal way”, was a standard lament of movie magazines those days, before Rekha suddenly became matures overnight with “Ghar” (1978) and began to make the most of her opportiunities in a most unFaryal manner.

This song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri.

What a hummable song it is. Asha Bhonsle hassung this difficult to sing song with gusto. It is one song that was quite popular with music lovers even though many of the music lovers were not aware about the details of this song. I was among that category of ignorant music lovers.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

With this song, the blog reaches 8100th song and the movie joins the list of 250 plus movies that have all their songs discussed in the past.

I take this opportunity to thank all the visitors, contributors and well wishers of this blog. Here is hoping that this blog will continue to go on and on, adding milestones after milestones with passage of time.

This has been a slower century, but I am sure that our future centuries will be far quicker.

Song-Haay chilman ka gir jaana (Sharaarat)(1972) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Ganesh

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

jhaank kar maine jo chilman daal di
aur bhi uljhan mein uljhan daal di

haaye chilman ka gir jaana
allah allah
haaye gir ke phir uthh jaana
allah allah
zamaana marta hai
hamaare jalwon per
zamaana marta hai
haseeno ke jalwon per
haaye chilman
haaye chilman ka gir jaana
allah allah
haaye gir ke phir uthh jaana
allah allah

jis mehfil mein khushi ke gul khilaaun
to dushman jale
ji dushman jale
jis pehlu mein adaa se muskuraaun
to chhuriyaan chale
ji chhuriya chale
khuda bhi aashiq hai
hamaari baaton per
khuda bhi aashiq hai
haseenon ki baaton per
haaye chilman
haaye chilman ka gir jaana
allah allah
haaye gir ke phir uthh jaana
allah allah

khel hai nazar ka
chalo ji chaal koi
na socho sanam
ji samjho sanam
pyaar ki ye baazi
jo haara wahi jeeta
tumhaari kasam
tumhaari kasam
farishte chalte hain
hamaari chaalon per
farishte chalte hain
haseeno ki chaalon per
haaye chilman
haaye chilman ka gir jaana
allah allah
haaye gir ke phir uthh jana
allah allah

jeet le wo duniya tu pyaar ke sahaare
to ho jaaye naam
ji ho jaaye naam
jaan le ishaare jo meri nazar ke
to bann jaaye kaam
ji bann jaaye kaam
chale jo parwaane
hamaari raaho pe
chale jo parwaane
haseenon ke raahon par
haaye chilman
haaye chilman ka gir jaana
allah allah
haaye gir ke phir uthh jaana
allah allah

Thanks Atulji to use the lyrics sent by me for celebrating the 8.1k song. To choose Ganesh’s song is like sone pe suhaga.
The great beauty of his music is that all his songs are always so catchy and peppy at times. He is a rare talent no doubt it.

Waah, kyaa gaana select kiya hai. Been waiting for this to appear for some time now. The name of Ganesh means great music composition and arrangement. And this is one of his very hummable numbers. Thank you Atul ji and Nitin ji.

And ah yes, congrats for the latest century hit. 8100 and counting.

Congratulations on achieving yet another target. May you hit no more roadblocks. Even if you do, we will understand, and continue to favor your blog no matter what.

Now to listen to the song you have chosen 🙂 I do love Dil ne pyar kiya hai..

Faryal was not really talented, I think that is what contributed to her being sidelined. She is pretty to look at no doubt, and has a screen presence.

I have always wandered what if Pyarelal had roped in Ganesh to form trio of Laxmikant, Pyarelal and Ganesh> LPG the combo would have been quite combustible and explosive.
Wonder whether the brothers were at loggerheads. Need to find out. Let us ask ASK> Arunji, Sudhirji and Kamathji; whether they have any dough on the matter.
This time around the gravy train got late by 20% (17 days instead of 14 days) but Atulji kya kare sakte hai; beechwale station bole ruk ruk ruk ruk

Nitin ji,

There is little material available on Ganesh. For a large part of his career, Ganesh worked with the L-P team as their master arranger. And the results of that are highly visible in the major success that L-P duo was during the 70s and 80s. Although there were never any explicit comments about it, but it appears that L-P were in a way instrumental in limiting independent assignments for him. And for the lack of genuine opportunity, Ganesh continued to work with them in the background. It is even rumored that more than a handful of L-P major hit songs were actually composed by Ganesh.

As far as i know, Ganesh was kicked out of the family cause he married a muslim girl. So I really doubt these rumors regarding his contribution towards LP’s songs. And btw, from 1963-1998, LP did just fine. New generation can only relate to R D Burman, and hence LP, the most prolific music director duo, dont get enough credit and are getting forgotten.

Bluefire ji,

The last film of Ganesh was ‘Dozakh’ released in 1987. This film came after a gap of 8 years from his previous film. After the release of ‘Dozakh’, the Hindi magazine, Madhuri, published an interview with him. I have the scan copy of this interview, shared by Shri Harish ji Raghuvanshi.

Some important and specific statements he made in this interview are as follows.

On being asked what he had been doing for the past 10 years, his short response was that he was working with L-P.

On being asked what did he do with that team, he said that he gives suggestions. The interviewer had noted a follow up sentence himself ‘yaane nepathya mein kaam, saamne anaam’ (working in the background and unnamed in credits).

On being asked why did his brother not help him with his career, he responded (after a thoughtful pause, as noted by the interviewer) that Pyaare has never given him any reference, and maybe that is good. Maybe, if he had been in Pyaare’s position he may also have done the same. And that Pyaare never promoted his younger brothers before, why would he do it now.

On being asked how does he meet his expenses etc., he again responded very shortly that he works with L-P.

Thanks Sudhirji for the info. But in this interview itself he is not saying much and giving short answers. And that is a telling sign to me.
