Satrah baras ki chhokariyaa pe

This article is written by Pamir Harvey, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
This is the last song from the film Ajanabee. This is one of the lesser known songs from this movie. From its sound it hardly seems to be from Pancham except at times during the interludes. A common situation in Indian films for songs is where the lovers reach a village or a tribal camp on one of their rendezvous. Once there, they are persuaded by the locals to participate in their dance and song item. Sometimes the pair starts imagining themselves in the situation of the leading pair singing and dancing.
Old men falling for younger women and making a fool of themselves is the theme of this song. Old men marrying young women and thus making the woman a widow at an early age, has been a theme of many social-critical films. This song here uses ridicule as its weapon to fight this trend.
In the song, we see Rajesh Khanna, Zeenat Aman and Prem Chopra. Zeenat Aman’s character seems to be high on bhaang. I wonder who the small-time actress is who is playing the village belle.
Song-Satrah baras ki chhokariyaa pe (Ajnabee)(1974) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics
satrah baras ki
ho o o o o o
satrah baras ki chhokariyaa pe
ho buddhe kaa dil aa gayaa
satrah baras ki chhokariyaa pe
buddhe kaa dil aa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
raamaa ho raamaa
teri duhaai
buraa zamaanaa aa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
paniyaa bharan ko
panghat pe jab
ghoonghat maine kholaa
panihaaran
main bhi hoon pyaasaa
buddhaa hanskar bolaa
paniyaa bharan ko
panghat pe jab
ghoonghat maine kholaa
panihaaran
main bhi hoon pyaasaa
buddhaa hanskar bolaa
paani ke do ghoont hi pi ke
wo masti mein aa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
raamaa ho raamaa
teri duhaai
buraa zamaanaa aa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
prem dagar pe
dekh ke tujhko
ho gayaa main deewaanaa
saath mujhe le chal
mujhko bhi prem nagar hai jaanaa
(Asha laughs)
prem dagar pe
dekhke tujhko
ho gayaa main deewaanaa
saath mujhe le chal
mujhko bhi prem nagar hai jaanaa
chaar kadam jo chalaa to phooli saans
paseenaa aa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
raamaa ho raamaa
teri duhaai
buraa zamaanaa aa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
saathh baras mein
buddhe par yoon
chhooth ke aayee jawaani
kisi jawaan se
mujhe laddaake
dekh le meri raani
saathh baras mein
buddhe par yoon
chhoothh ke aayee jawaani
arre kisi jawaan se
mujhe bhiddaake
dekh le meri raani
bech ke ghar apnaa
sone kaa haar mujhe pahnaa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
satrah baras ki chhokariyaa pe
buddhe kaa dil aa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
ho raamaa ho raamaa
teri duhaai
buraa jamaanaa aa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa
buddhaa satthhiyaa gayaa

I know I am coming here after ages, but this is a fun song, and I am glad to be coming back to this one! However, I can’t remember hearing it in those days, so I assume this song didn’t make it to the top of the charts. Interesting way to poke fun at all the old men who want young wives! Thanks, Harvey and Atul, for the fun, and Sudhirji for gently prodding me!
