Kyaa buraa hai kyaa bhalaa

Posted on: July 2, 2013

This article is written by Pamir Harvey, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Libaas (1988) didn’t get an official release though it was shown at some international film festivals. When asked about the film’s fate some ten years back, Gulzar played the ball into the producer’s court and feigned disinterest. Most probably it will never get released. All that we are left with, are the songs and some dialogues from the movie.

Today I bring you the lyrics of a song from this movie, which is historic, since this is last duet by Lata and Pancham. It is always nice to say such things of something being first or last. To tell you the truth though I can’t remember many songs sung by them together. In fact the only song, which I can remember where they both feature together is aa mere saathi aa (https://atulsongaday.me/2011/07/03/aa-mere-saathhi-aa/) from Chhalia” (1960), where Pancham gives a background ru ru ru ru to Lata’s rendition of the song.

Song-Kyaa buraa hai kyaa bhalaa (Libaas)(1988)(UR) Singers-R D Burman, Lata, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
ho sake to jalaa
dil jalaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
ho sake to jalaa
dil jalaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
ho sake to jalaa
dil jalaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa

muskuraanaa sehte jaanaa
chaahne ki rasm hai
muskuraanaa sehte jaanaa
chaahne ki rasm hai
naa lahu naa koi aansoon
ishq aisaa zakhm hai
muskuraake zakhm khaa le
naa shikaayat koi naa gilaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
ho sake to jalaa
dil jalaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa

aa aa
haan aa aa
saaraa din ghazlen pironaa
raat bhar aawaargi
saaraa din ghazlen pironaa
raat bhar aawaargi
hat gayaa daaman to kyaa hai
saadaa dil hai saadgi
naa dilaasaa
chaahaa dil ne
naa wafaadaari ka silsilaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
ho sake to jalaa
dil jalaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa

Trust you to bring some old forgotten song out from the archives.

The song has a nice beat. I don’t think ever heard it before.

Thanks for this, Harvey.

I have seen this movie in 1991 Bangalore Film festival. This song was picturised on Naseeruddin Shah(a Middle class budding stage Play director) and Shabana Azmi(comes from a rich family and in love with Naseeruddin) and Arjun Chakraborthy(acted in Ankush,Zara Si Zindagi)

I dont` remember much about picturisation of this song, but I remember a portion of this song was picturised in an open play auditorium, where Naseeruddin and Shabana were busy with their stage play rehearsal. This song appears at the starting of the movie.

Yes harvey ji

I enjoyed that movie very much , but cinema hall housefull tha, main bahut dhyaan se movie dekh na sakaa aur jithnaa matured audience ab main hoon(That`s purely my opinon 🙂 don`t laught at me.)uthnaa matured audience tab nahin thaa. Issee liye main movie ke bahut finer points ko digest kar nahin sakaa aur ab sab scenes yaad bhi nahin rahe(maine movie ko 1991 mein dekhaa thaa)

If you are interested, I have written something (in the form of 3 comments)about the movie in this blog only under the post of Libaas song “Sili hawa choo gayee”
Here is the link:

Seeli hawaa chhoo gayee

I hope you don`t laugh at my tootaa phootaa English because I am very poor at communicating my thoughts to another one.

Whatever it is ,the movie was very very good,(atleast I felt that way at that time) I am still hoping that this movie will get a proper release in future.
Chemistry between Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin is superb and picturisation of another song from the movie “Phir kisse shaakh ne pheenkhi chaanv”( was picturised at night time on Naseer,Shabana,Raj babbar ) is very good.

And the Sili hawa song was picturised on honeymoon couple-Shabana,Raj babbar on a private ship/cruise.(Shabana leaves her middle class husband and marries a rich Industrialist Raj babbar, in quest of her “materialistic life”)

Thank you Prakashji for the much prized information. I read your comments at the blog post of sili hawa. Very interesting. Got many insights in the film. Particularly the ending left me a bit bewildered, raising my wish to see the film.
You are right about beign able to get the finer points, when one gets older. Thus I find nothing to laugh about it, since it happens to me as well.
BTW, I think in the song sili hawa choon gayi, the line IS tumse mili jo zindagi hamne abhi boyi nahin. Boyi = to sow. That is so typical Gulzar!
