Ye dil deewaana deewaana hai ye dil

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

This is a Sonu Nigam song from the 1997 film Pardes. It happens to be one of those songs which were in my original list of desert songs. This is a Subhash Ghai film starring Shah Rukh Khan, Apoorva Agnihotri, Mahima Chaudhary, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher etc. This was Mahima Chaudhary’s first film. And as per his penchant for naming the heroines he would launch in his movies, Subhash Ghai has given her the name ‘Mahima’. Just like, Meenakshi (Hero) and Madhuri (Ram Lakhan) etc. Having seen the film on its release, this song is there in the memory as one with a car driving fast on the interstate in the middle of desert. On seeing it again Irealised that only a little part of the song is on the road, in a car. The rest of it is in Las Vegas and Disney land.

A huge Cactus or two along the road would have leant authenticity to my claim that this is a desert song. But sadly there are none to be seen at least in the video clip that are available on youtube. I have found a song in “Laila Majnu” (1945) where I have detected a cactus like plant alongwith Date Palms.

Anyways, due to it being in the original list, here is the desert song no. 12. Shah Rukh Khan is going somewhere in a hurry. So he hit the highway leaving the engaged couple of Apoorva and Mahima in Las Vegas. The singer is as said above, Sonu Nigam. Music is composed by Nadeem Sharavan. I had guessed the lyricist to be Sameer but it is Anand Bakshi. As was to be expected from a Subhash Ghai film, the songs of this film were few but quite good, including the one under discussion.

The sufi qawwali ‘nai hona thha lekin ho gayaa… ho gayaa hai mujhe pyar’ and ‘do dil mil rahe hain magar chupke chupke’ both picturised at locations in Fateh pur Sikri and also other Kumar Sanu song ‘ meri mehbooba ‘ were hit and popular songs.

The trend for using more than one singer to sing such solo like songs had already begun, it appears. Shankar Mahadevan and Ehsaan along with Hema Sardesai are giving company to Sonu Nigam in singing this song.

I loved the songs of Pardes. When I admitted to that, some of my friends were surprised. But really, I STILL like the songs of this film, and this one was my most favorite.

Sonu had such a sweet voice, he lends poignancy to this song despite its upbeat rhythm. Shahrukh also dances to the song, ostensibly happy, but you can see his sad core.

Lovely song, Nahm, thanks for posting this.

Thanks for liking the song, thandapani. I have a few favourite Sonu Nigam songs. Another one is ‘tu hi tu satrangi re’ from ‘Dil se”.

Ohhh I love that song.

I had a cassette of Sonu Nigam’s songs sometime in the early 2000s. It had some NFS songs. “Ab mujhe raat din, tumhara hi khayal hai.” was one of them

His songs from that Preeti-Akshay movie were lovely “Sangharsh” were super. Mujhe raat din, bas mujhe chahti ho. And Dil ka karar kho gaya – my super favorite 🙂

Now that you mention the song from ‘sangharsh’ – mujhe raat din bas mujhe chaahti ho ” , here is the original S. D. Burmanish song composed by OPN in “ek musaafir ek haseena’

Mujhe dekhkar aap ka muskuraana

This was the first Sonu Nigam film song I heard in my life. I used to watch the very popular Zee Sa Re Ga Ma in those days. He used to host it – and I was very impressed by him. Not just his voice but also the way he would conduct himself. Showing a lot of respect for the judges and giving a lot of encouragement to the participants.

I think he has a really fine voice – and it shows here in this song.

Thanks for the write-up, nahm. Nice desert song. 🙂

I feel Sonu Nigam is the most versatile talent of his generation. Good to know that some people like this song.

Thanx and regards.
