“Friendship” is a concept of relationship. It means different things to different people. For me, it is a space where I can be myself, no pretense and no expectations of always being well behaved. And certain amount of taking each other for granted, as I believe I do for all my relationships. I have been lucky in my friends that they tolerate my taking them for granted, at times. And consider themselves to be punching bags, when I am in full flow on some matters/issues. And one of them dutifully registers all my complaints, and tries to find solutions, and gives valuable suggestions. So much so that it makes me feel guilty for worrying her in trivial matters.

Over the years, I have learnt that a person’s true nature reflects in ones friendships. I have learnt to really value true friends. And now I try not to worry them with my tirades. 🙂

In one instance of a deep friendship, it turned out that I was blind, and was not able to see what was, right in front of me. I kept trying to ignore the things which felt not quite right in terms of being friends. It was the dissapointment of my life. The deficeincy was apparant to others but I couldnt see it for being too close. I can now reflect and say that I have no regrets about losing that particular friendship. Certain emotions are fragile, and when something snaps there is just no way of mending it.

This is a tribute to star of the millennium, Amitabh Bachchan, who turned 71 on 11th October, 2013. While doing the A-Z to Rafi songs series , I could not include a song on friendship. So this is a chance to post this lovely Rafi solo from the film “Dostana” (1980).

In “Dostana” (1980), Amitabh Bachchan is a police Inspector and Shatrughan Sinha is a Lawyer. They are childhood friends, and sometimes their paths cross professionally too. They get their lines crossed in the matters of love also and fall in love with the same girl, namely Zeenat Aman. The ensuing misunderstandings lead to the break in their friendship.

Amitabh Bachchan arrives at this party with Zeenat Aman, and finds Shatrughan Sinha is also present with his cronies Prem Chopra etc. The movie directed by Raj Khosla also has Amrish Puri in the cast. Amitabh starts singing this song of broken friendship and the pain it has caused. Shatrughan Sinha is amused to begin with but is moved to tears by the time the song ends. He joins in the applause, and than if I remember correctly throws the glass at the mirror or something, to express his anguish.

This actually is a nicely shot song, with the visuals created by the mirrors, where Shatrughan Sinha is watching both Amitabh and Zeenat Aman. Everytime I see this song it reminds me of this song Jo hamne dasastaan apni sunaayi aap kyun roye from ” Woh kaun thi”. The director in both the songs is Raj Khosla.

The movie had the usual twists and turns revolving around the triangle. The lyricst is Anand Bakshi and music directors are Laxmikant – Pyarelal. Rafi sahab was nominated for Filmfare best singer for that year, for this song. Not the same as winning. But this happens to be one of the best Rafi songs on Amitabh Bachchan. Even “The Lion of destroying enemies” was affected by the dispassioned plea in Rafi Sahab voice 🙂 .

Song-Mere dost qissa ye kya ho gaya (Dostaana)(1980) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

mere dost qissa yeh kyaa ho gayaa aa
mere dost qissa yeh kyaa ho gayaa aa
sunaa hai ke tu bewafaa ho gayaa aa
sunaa hai ke tu bewafaa ho gayaa
mere dost qissa yeh kyaa ho gayaa aa
sunaa hai ke tu bewafaa ho gayaa

duaa bad-duaa de yeh mumkin nahin ea
duaa bad-duaa de yeh mumkin nahin ea
mujhe tu dagaa de yeh mumkin nahin ea
khudaa jaane kyaa aa
khudaa jaane kyaa
maajraa ho gayaa aa
sunaa hai ke tu bewafaa ho gayaa aa
sunaa hai ke tu bewafaa ho gayaa

agar maang le tu o jaan-e-jigar
agar maang le tu o jaan-e-jigar
tujhe jaan de doon main yeh jaan kar
ke haq dosti kaa
ke haq dosti ka
adaa ho gaya aa
sunaa hai ke tu bewafaa ho gayaa aa
sunaa hai ke tu bewafaa ho gayaa

qayaamat se kam yaar yeh gham nahin
qayaamat se kam yaar yeh gham nahin
ke tu aur main reh gaye ham nahin
meraa yaar mujh se
meraa yaar mujh se
judaa ho gayaa aa
sunaa hai ke tu bewafaa ho gayaa aa
sunaa hai ke tu bewafaa ho gayaa
mere dost qissa yeh kyaa ho gayaa aa
sunaa hai ke tu bewafaa ho gayaa

I always felt that this song was picturised and lip synced by Shotgun :). Coming to think of it, Rafi saabs voice would have suited him better than Amitabh.

Atul ji, i think Dostana (1980) had 6 songs in it. 5 songs have already been discussed on the blog, and I guess just one more song remains to be discussed.. namely..

Bahoot Khoob Surat Ek Ladki sung by Kishore Kumar.

Not so fast….

‘Kitna aasaan hai kehna bhool jaao” lata solo is not posted. The slower sad version of ‘salaamat rahe dostana’ is also yet to be covered. Only three are posted as per the ;list of songs movie-wise’.

Btw Shatrughan Sinha is the side hero here, with only one song, which he gets to sing in Rafi’s voice.
