This is a brother-sister song about ‘bidaayi’ from the film the film ‘Adaalat (1976). Only one song from this film is posted in the blog i.e. the popular duet Ho tumse door rahke hamne jaana pyaar kya hai.

When I looked up the rest of the songs at myswar.com I found this song. The singer this time is Mukesh, and the song was quite popular and I have heard it many times on radio and seen it on T. V. too. The music director’s are Kalyanji-Anandji and lyricist for this song is Gulshan Bawra. Amitabh Bachchan is singing this song at some pre-wedding function at home before his sister’s marriage. Waheeda Rehman is his wife and she is also seen in the song. Amitabh Bachchan played a double role in this film, playing father and son. The father is singing this bidaayi song for his sister and it is his son in the duet mentioned above with Neetu Singh.

It was a pleasant change seeing Amitabh Bachchan with Mukesh’s playback. This makes me wonder if he holds the record for having maximum no. of singers giving playback to him in Hindi films. Apart from the Golden era singers namely three of them like Rafi, Kishore and Mukesh, I am not sure if Manna Dey has ever sung for him. Oh he has sung for Amitabh in “Sholay”. R. D. Burman and Bappi Lahiri have given playback for him. The whole generation of Rafi clones like Anwar, Shabbir Kumar and Mohammed Aziz, and Kishore clones like Kumar Sanu and Sudesh Bhnosle were his favoured choice, from time to time. Apart from these, singers of new generation like Shankar , Sonu Nigam , Udit Narayan, Shaan, and Abhi Bhattacharya have sung songs for him.

And all along he kept singing for himself, so well that he won many awards. In fact he has won all national honours bar ‘Bharat Ratna’ .

This reminds me of one video clip I happened to see on Youtube. Rafi Sahab’s daughter-in-law has written a book on him. At the launch function in Mumbai, Amitabh Bachchan was the guest of honour. Nasreen, the writer of the book talked about the song ‘chal mere bhai tere haathh jodtaa hoon’ from ‘Naseeb’ which is a duet song of Amitabh Bachchan and Rafi Sahab. After the recording when Rafi sahab arrived home, he was very excited and told his grand children that he recorded a song with ‘Amitabh Bachchan’, as he was the reigning superstar and a favourite with all kids. To this, Mr. Bachchan was quick to reply that he also went home and told his family that he sang a song with Rafi Sahab.

Song-Behna o behna teri doli main sajaaunga (Adaalat)(1976) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Gulshan Bawra, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

behna o behna
teri doli main sajaaungaa
behna o behna
teri doli main sajaaungaa
teri jaayegi baaraat
hogi aankhon mein barsaat
hanste hanste main dukhdaa
bidaayi ka chhupaaungaa
behnaa o behnaa
teri doli main sajaaungaa

meri gudiyaa jaisi behnaa
meri gudiyaa jaisi behnaa
tu to hai iss ghar ka gehnaa
jaa ke tu sasuraal mein apne
seeta jaisi ban ke rehnaa
behnaa o behnaa
teri doli main sajaaungaa
behnaa o behnaa
teri doli main sajaaungaa

jeewan mein tu sab sukh paanaa
jeewan mein tu sab sukh paanaa
sadaa sukhi sasuraal mein rehnaa
sukh ke uss jeewan mein ham ko
sukh ke uss jeewan mein ham ko
bhool na jaana pyaari behnaa
behnaa o behnaa
teri doli main sajaaungaa

Nice one Nahm. One very odd person to give playback to AB was none other than Laxmikant Kudalkar of LP fame. He sang a duet with Asha Bhosle “Gore Nahi Hum Kaale Sahi” in Desh Premee. His voice was lip synced by AB and Prem Chopra while Hema Malini lip synced Asha Bhosle.

Prakshachandra ji,

That is exactly why it feels like many voices suited Amitabh Bachchan. Yasudas, Mahendra Kapoor, Manhar Udhaas, Amit Kumar, and Laxmikant. Now who else ? Has S. P. Balasubramaniam and Pankaj Udhaas ever sung for him ?

No I don`t think S.P.Balasumamaniam and Pankaj Udhas sang for him.Corrections/confirmations please……

lets now search for a song by SPB for the Bachchan & we come to the song in “Mahaan” under RDB’s baton— “Asli Kya Hain Nakli Kya Hain Inko Aaj bata denge, Marte Dam tak Yaad Rahe jo Jalwa aaj Dikha Denge, Kyun Biradar, arre Haan Haan Brother”
