“Phaansi” (1978) was produced and directed by Harmesh Malhotra for Eastern Films. The movie had Shashi Kapoor, Sulakshana Pandit, Asrani, Ranjeet, Pran, Mohan Sherry, Sudhir, Jeevan, Urmila Bhatt, Iftekhar, Sapru, Ram Mohan, Shetty, Aarti, ,Aruna Irani,Birbal, Mohan Choti, Manni etc with special appearances by Anwar Hussain, Dev Kumar, B.M.Vyas, Randhir Senior, Purnima, Chaman Puri, Moolchand, Rajrani, Murad etc.
The movie was an extremely boring movie as far as I was concerned and so I never planned to watch this movie. I did not even like the songs of this movie much. The song under discussion was the most well known song from the movie, and that was about all.
When I look at the list of songs figuring in Binaca geetmala final, I find that this song had finished 17th in 1978 in Binaca geetmala final and this must have been the biggest claim to fame for this movie, because I do not think that the movie did anything spectacular at the box office.
Here is this song from “Phaansi”. It is sung by Rafi and Sulakshana Pandit. It is picturised as a bullock cart song. Sulakshana Pandit alongwith a few of her sahelis climb up a bullockcard carrying haystack and find Shashi Kapoor at the “driver”‘s seat who then bursts into this song and Sulakshana Pandit then follows suit.
Gulshan Bawra is the lyricist of this song. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

jab aati hogi yaad meri
haaye ae
jab aati hogi yaad meri ee
teraa dil toh machaltaa hogaa
jab aati hogi yaad meri ee
teraa dil toh machaltaa hogaa aa
tu bhi toh mujhe milne ko
tu bhi toh mujhe milne ko
din raat tadaptaa hogaa
jab aati hogi yaad meri
haaye
jab aati hogi yaad meri
likhe toh honge
khat mujhko
par daak mein na daale honge
par daak mein na daale honge
ke mujhko dikhaane ke liye ae
ke mujhko dikhaane ke liye
toone sab woh sambhaale honge
barson na meraa khat paake tu
thandi aahein toh bhartaa hogaa
jab aati hogi yaad meri
haaye
jab aati hogi yaad meri
khayaalon mein tu mujhko laake
kartaa toh hogaa diljoyee
kartaa toh hogaa diljoyee
yeh bhi toh kabhi
sochtaa hogaa
yeh bhi toh kabhi sochtaa hogaa
le jaaye na mujhe aur koi
kissi aur ki hone ke dar se
teraa dil bhi dhadktaa hogaa
jab aati hogi yaad meri
haaye
jab aati hogi yaad meri
teraa dil toh machaltaa hogaa
tu bhi toh mujhe milne ko
tu bhi toh mujhe milne ko
din raat tadaptaa hogaa
jab aati hogi yaad meri
haaye
jab aati hogi yaad meri

Very frequent on radio and loudspeakers also. and after that it was an essential number in every compilation of Rafi duets released by various music companies, and duet compilations of Rafi Saab sung by other newcomers (viz. Vipin Sachdeva etc).
@ Prakash ji – thanks ! I thought it has already been posted earlier. I have not watched this movie, so I can not say anything about it.
