“Mera Dil Jal Rahaa Hai” – a dialogue that is delivered with a measured viciousness, with lancet eyes looking daggers at you, lips pinched and nose screwed, with both hands half raised in a dismissive directive to all and sundry – an utterance of extreme frustration and deepest contempt. This expression and this articulation, is a signature hallmark of the one and only comical-vampish-diabolical mother-in-law cum scheming aunt or sister. Yes, the one and only in her class in the Hindi film world – Erin Issac Daniels.

Oh!, ‘who is she’ you are asking, right? Sorry, I should have used her screen name. All of us know her more popularly as Manorama. A complete image of a mean and rancorous mother-in-law or a nasty and malicious aunt, her typecasting in such vampish roles was a given. And like Lalita Pawar, at one time Manorama also became a household name, to refer to any mean and unlikeable female person.

Remembering Manorama on the anniversary of her passing away (15th February).

The scene recounted at the beginning of this write up, is from the film ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ (1972). Manorama plays the role of Kaushalya, the mean chaachi of rich heiress Seeta (Hema Malini), who is scheming to disenfranchise her niece and usurp her wealth and estate for herself – a role that suited her to a T. There have been other actresses in this genre, but Manorama’s characterization was somewhat unique, as her baddie roles have a good measure of comic touch, such that she will make the audience break into a laugh even when she is apparently being vicious in the scene being played on the screen.

Not much information is recorded about her origins and her childhood. She was of Anglo-Indian descent – daughter of an Irish mother and a Punjabi Christian gentleman, who was a professor in an engineering college in Lahore. Born and brought up in Lahore she grew up into a fabulously pretty young woman. Her lifestyles and social tastes very Indian and very Punjabi. It is noted that her beauty would make many a head turn, when she walked by.

As per her own account, it was the producer director Roop K Shorey, who spotted her in a school function. She was being trained in classical music and dance. Her performance at the school concert caught his attention. Her first appearance is as a child actor, younger sister to SD Narang in the 1941 film ‘Khazaanchi’. She also appeared in films like ‘Khandaan’ (1942), ‘Patwaari’ (Punjabi film, early 1940s), ‘Zamindaar’ (1942), ‘Poonji’ (1943), ‘Panchhi’ (1944), all made in Lahore. She has also stated that she used to do charitable stage shows during 1940s, many of them for the Red Cross organization.

In 1944, she made her first appearance as a leading lady in a film made in Bombay. The film is ‘Bhai’. Over the next four years or so, she continued to appear in leading roles in films like ‘Badnami’ (1946), ‘Khamosh Nigaahen’ (1946), ‘Rehana’ (1946), ‘Chaand Sitaare’ (1948), ‘Chunariya’ (1948), ‘Chakori’ (1949) etc. Incidentally, it was at the during the production of ‘Chaand Sitaare’ that she met with Rajan Haksar, her future husband. Their marriage did not endure. One daughter was born to them –Reeta Haksar. (Reeta appeared in a few films during 1970s).

By the time the decade of 1940s came to a close, Manorama had turned into a plumpish person. The leading roles stopped coming her way, and she was transitioned into being a character artist. In a career that spans almost six decades, her own claim is that she has appeared in more than 400 films. During the late 1980s and 1990s, her appearances on the screen all but dried up. As per herself, the family drama was being phased out of the film storylines, and there was really no place for a rancorous scheming busybody in the new era films.

She appeared in ‘Junoon’ (1992) and Deepa Mehta’s ‘Water’ (2007) – she was without any film assignments in the intervening 15 years. She found work in TV serials in Delhi and Bombay, just enough to keep herself afloat. She passed away, this day in 2008, in Bombay.

The song presented in this post is a duet performed on screen by Manorama and Om Prakash. The film is ‘Kundan’ from 1955, a classic from the stables of Minerva Movietone, the flagship production house of Sohrab Modi. The story of this film is loosely based on ‘La Miserables’, the famous French novel by Victor Hugo. Cast of actors includes Sohrab Modi, Nimmi, Ulhas, Om Prakash, Baby Naaz, Manorama, Roopmala, Sunil Dutt, Murad, Pran, Dar Kashmiri, Sadat Ali, and Kumkum. Manorama and Om Prakash play the roles of foster parents of Kundan’s (role played by Sohrab Modi) grand daughter Uma (role played by Nimmi).

A typical Manorama performance on screen. Enjoy

tum hothon mein chamcha rakho
hum paakit mein paise

jin kadmon par paisa barse
duniya choome wohi kadam
duniya choome wohi kadam

chai piyo ji garam garam
biscuit khaa lo naram naram
jo dil chaahe maang lo hum se
sab kuchh hai bhagwan kasam

aao hamaare hotal mein
chai piyo ji garam garam
biscuit khaa lo naram naram
jo dil chaahe maang lo hum se
sab kuchh hai bhagwan kasam
bhagwan kasam
aao hamaare hotal mein

Wow! Such a lovely song. How did I miss this informative post on Manorama. !!!
Actually your opening itself was enough to point out the person you were talking about sudhirji. In fact it immediately brought the visual of karela being chopped mercilessly along with the eye rolling expression. I see that she has rolled her eyes in this song too
