Today (18 february 2014) is the Birth Anniversary of NALINI JAYAWANT. She was one of my favourite actresses from the 40s and 50s. Her film which I liked the most was “Hum sab chor hain “-1956. Though she was 30 year old by this time, she still looked very charming, naughty and beautiful. The Hero,Shammi Kapoor was only 26 years, but no one ever felt that she looked older than him. There were excellent songs in the film, composed by O.P.Nayyar and the story was quite entertaining.

Our Filmi Duniya is such that it is by exception that an artiste gets name, fame, riches and happy family life,in a package. Most cases were where Name and fame brought an unhappy family life or a successful artiste died pauper or in penury,to the extent of begging on street or becoming insane in the last stages of life. Success in career made most of them to run after personal happiness through several marriages or by becoming slaves of Alcohol or Gambling. Many Film personalities suffered from severe illness in the last phase of their life.

Nalini Jaywant was beautiful, charming, educated, from a good family, highly successful in career, but she always lost on marital happiness, begetting children or love. She spent last 30 years of her life living all alone in her bungalow of 60 years and one day she died unnoticed, unsung and uncared.Even her dead body was found after 3 days,by her relative.

NALINI JAYAWANT was born on 18-2-1926 in Bombay. Her father Purushottam Jayawant was with Customs department. He was the brother of Ratanbai Shilotri-Shobhana Samarth’s(nee Saroj Shilotri) mother. She was a smart child and participated in song and dance programmes of her school, Ram Mohan Vidyalaya. At the age of 6 years she participated in an A.I.R. programme. She also acted as Heroine in Tagore’s “Shrimati ji”.

In the function of Nutan’s 4th Birthday, Nalini sang a song which was heard and appreciated by Virendra Desai, one of the 5 sons of Chimanlal Desai of Sagar Movietone and later National studios. He had directed ‘Sanskar’-40 already. He offered to Launch Nalini as heroine in his forthcoming film Radhika-1941. Her parents were not willing but her uncle, who was Virendra’s teacher once, convinced her parents.

The 13 year old Nalini entered the film world with Frock and Pigtail, as if it was a Picnic. Film Radhika and her songs became a Hit and Mehboob cast her in Behan-41 and Desai gave her Nirdosh-41. Her Ankh Michauli-42 and Adab Arz-43 were also hits. She married Virendra Desai in 1943. He was already married and also had children. Due to this marriage his family threw him out and for the next 4 years Nalini had no films. They shifted to Malad. In 1947, she made a comeback with Gujarati film-Warisdar. In 1948, she divorced Virendra and did Anokha Pyar in 1948 with Dilip Kumar. Filmistan cast her opposite Ashok kumar in Samadhi-1950. This was a great hit. This became a popular romantic pair, just like the earlier pairs of Ashok Kumar-Devika Rani and Ashok Kumar-Leela Chitnis. They did 11 films together. Nalini got involved with Ashok Kumar romantically, but the affair fizzled due to the nervousness of Ashok Kumar. She never ever spoke to him in her life again.

Her star was on its Zenith now. From 1950 to 1960 she had done 41 films. She got married to actor Director Prabhu Dayal. On the sets she was very charming and was the life of the studio. Her hair styles used to be different in every film and College girls used to copy her styles. She was a good cook and liked Coffee and Ice cream very much.

She spent last 30 years of her life in loneliness. After Prabhu Dayal’s death in 2001, she shut herself off from the world in her bungalow in union park, Chembur, Bombay. The bungalow opposite hers, belonged to Ashok Kumar, who used to see her with Binoculars, but she never cared. One day she simply died in her house on 20th December 2010. He body was discovered by her relative after 3 days. Thus ended a success story of Hindi film world….

Film Radhika-1941 was made by National studios. In 1940, Sagar Movietone (with 52 films to its credit) amalgamated with General Pictures to form National Studios. Mehboob Khan’s Aurat (original of Mother India) was made by Sagar Movietone but released by National Studios. Chimanlal Desai(father of Director Virendra Desai) had joined Sagar Film co. of Ardeshir Irani ,as a Partner. After Talkie films started, it was renamed as Sagar Movietone in 1931. Chimanlal Desai soon left National studios after 3 films and started his own Amar Pictures, which too was closed in 1948 and he returned to his business of films exhibition, running 2 Theatres in Bandra, Bombay.

The music for Radhika-41 was by Ashok Ghosh, whose name will forever be taken for recording the First song by Mukesh ‘ Dil hi bujha hua ho to” in film Nirdosh-41 and also for Surendra and Bibbo’s song ” tumhi ne mujh ko prem sikhaya” from Manmohan-36. Ashok Ghosh started as an assistant to Pransukh Nayak in the film Dr. Madhurika-1935. he flowered with Sagar Movietone and National studios. His last film was Gunjan-48.

The cast of Radhika-41 was Nalini Jayawant, Harish,Jyoti, Kanhiyalal, Sankata Prasad (they were brothers),Bhudo Advani etc. The name of actor Harish is also not known to many people.

HARISH was Born in Delhi on 23-10-1916, and was brought up in and graduated from Delhi. Then he came to Bombay in 1937 and joined Sagar Movietone. Those days graduates were in great demand and they were valued highly in the Cine industry, so much so that many artists proudly used to flout their degrees e.g. Lyricist Moti,BA or actor Surendranath-BA,LL B. The reason was that not many from the earlier lot in the industry were much educated, though they had the talents and hard working attitudes. Anyway, the first film of Harish was Hum,Tum aur Voh-1938 in which he acted and sang songs with Maya Banerjee(this name too may be less heard by many, but she was a Bengal beauty, actress and singer of repute then). Then came Postman, Sadhana, Uski Tamanna, Sanskar etc. He acted in about 25 films as a Hero/side hero and sang several songs as well. His last film as a Hero was Amaanat-1943. Then he established ‘Omar khayyam Films’ and produced and directed many films as Tara Harish(a single name-not a male female jodi). He died in 1970 at Delhi.

Let us now hear the DEBUT song of Nalini Jayawant from her FIRST FILM- Radhika-1941 and remember this bubbly, fun loving and beautiful actress today,on her Birth Anniversary.

bhaagti phirti radha pagli
darshan ki abhilaashi
darshan ki abhilaashi
bhaagti phirti radha pagli
darshan ki abhilaashi
darshan ki abhilaashi
januma t’at par khadi wey kehti
januma t’at par khadi wey kehti
abhi to hoon main pyaasi
abhi to hoon main pyaasi
krishn kahaan hain
krishn kahaan hain
krishn kahaan hain
koi bataa do
hamri pyaas bujha do o o
hamri pyaas bujha do
koi bataa do
koi bataa do
ho banbaasi ee
chhaayee hai kyun ye udaasi

itne mein chhoti si bansi
krishn ne apni bajaayee
itne mein chhoti si bansi
krishn ne apni bajaayee
sun ke baansri bhaage radha
sun ke baansri bhaage radha
sudh budh sab bisraa’ee
sudh budh sab bisraa’ee
dekh ke apne manmohan ko
dekh ke apne manmohan ko
karne lagi duhaai
karne lagi duhaai

darshan pyaas nahin kyun bujhti
darshan pyaas nahin kyun bujhti

batlaa do hey kanhaai
batlaa do hey kanhaai
