For an average music lover in India, music means film music. The fact that there is a vast body of non film music as well is missed out by most. The non film music has its own audience, though sadly this niche audience is far smaller in number. Established fim movie singers have sung a few non fim songs. On the other end of the spectrum, there were singers who were primarily non film singers and who occasionally sang a few movie songs as well.
Searching for music became a technological possibility on internet some one decade ago. It was then that I began to search for Hindi movie music online. while doing that, I came across non film music as well. I was not interested in such music and I paid little attention to them.
My disinterest towards non film music continued even after I began this blog. Once I discussed a K L aSaigal song in the blog believing it to be a film song. It turned out to be a non film song indeed. Instead of deleting that song from the blog, it was then decided that we may make an exception and post K L Saigal NFS in the blog. Later, we began to post NFS of other singers as well. As I got exposed to such songs, I have realised that there is a vast world of NFS that we need to be aware of. Likewise there is a vast world of folk music as well, which had some audience in the past decade but they are sadly becoming extinct for lack of partonage and lack of appreciation, but that is another topic altogether.
I became aware of the name of Juthika Roy one decade back when I became aware about NFS. But I never bothered to listen to her songs that were available. I began to listen to her songs when they were discussed in the blog.
A few days ago, I came to know that her birth anniversary was approaching. I decided to discuss a song sung by her. I found that her more popular songs were already discussed in the blog. My search led me to an NFS that I had never heard before. I began to like this song as I heard this song a few times. I needed to listen to this song manya times because getting the lyrics of this song was a tall order as the lyrics were not the usual lyrics found in most songs.
Though I have got the bulk of the lyrics , there are still gaps where I have been unable to get a fe words right. i request our readers with keener ears to help fill the gaps and point out errors in the song.
From the lyrics, one can decipher that it a separation song where the lady asks a “papeeha” to go to the place of her beloved and deliver her message. The separation pangs that she feels is a year round affair and in all weathers. The song describes her “missing the beloved” feelings in various months, namely baisaakh, jeth, Aashaadh, saawan, bhaadon etc etc.
Kamal Dasgupta has composed this song. Lyricist of this superbly written song is unfortunately not known. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the lyricist of this song.
On the occasion of the 94th birth anniversary of Juthika Roy (20 april 1920-5 feb 2014). here is this magical NFS that was created over seven decades ago.
