Today’s song is from the film Bade Bhaiyya-1951. It is sung by G M Durrani and Shamshad Begum. The film was produced by Super pictures, Bombay and was directed by Aspi Irani. The music was by composer Premnath.

Composer Premnath is an ideal case of ” Same Name Confusions”. Since his name coincides with the more well known actor Premnath, operating almost in the same period, people misunderstood that Actor Premnath and composer Premnath were the same person. Surprisingly, actor Premnath was a good singer himself and had been trained by professional Ustads for classical music, but he could never fulfil his desire of becoming a singer and became an actor instead. However he did a film song, which was posted on this blog by our Sudhir ji sometime back-if I am remember right. But the fact remains that the music director Premnath was different from the actor Premnath..

PREMNATH the Music Director was born on 5-7-1918 in Gujranwala,Punjab. He learnt music from experts in Amritsar,Multan and Lahore He acted in films like Shahr-e-khamoshi and also sang in Sohni Mahiwal-1938.

After marriage, he moved to Bombay. His first film as a Music Director was Rangbhoomi-1946. In this film ,a novice Mohd. Rafi sang many songs for him. His other films were Dehati-47,Chandrahas-47,Sagar’s Pehla pyaar-47. He then produced a film ” Chand sitare”-48 under the banner of Ravindra Art productions. Mukesh, Lata and Geeta Roy sang in it. In the film ‘Alakh Niranjan’-50, he used Mohd. Farooqui,Sulochana Kadam and Rajkumari.

Premnath gave music in many films of Super pictures of Aspy irani like Bade Bhaiya-51 and Maya Machhindra-51, in which Surendra,Geeta, Rafi and Shamshad sang. His another film ‘Qatil kaun’ in late 50s was not released. Rafi,Asha,Manna Dey,Mubarak Begum and Shamshad had sung songs in this movie.

His films subsequently diminished. Sati Vaishalini-59, Main hoon jaadugar-65 and Tarzan in Fairyland-68 were his last films.

After he stopped work as MD, he devoted his time for the welfare of Cine Artists as a trade union leader. He served the music Directors Association for 30 years as its secretary.

He died in the first week of may-1993 at the age of 75 years.

The film Bade Bhaiyya was directed by Aspi Irani, who was basically famous for stunt and C grade films. Aspi Irani was an important director from the early films. His full name was ASPANDIAR HORMUSJI IRANI.He was born in the Parsi colony, Panch Gardens in Dadar,Bombay on 8-10-1911. He started work in the film industry after he completed his secondary schooling and as all parsis are,due to his hard work,he soon attained a top rank in the Industry. He started directing filmsfrom 1936,the early Talkie stage, when the influence of ParsiTheatre, fantasies and dramas on folklore was the staple of stunt films. All such films had a basic structure and with a little changes here and there new films hit the screens.

There was a fixed audience for such films, but as the time went by,slowly the taste of the audience changed. However Aspi Irani continued with his style till the end.He did direct few social films also but the handling of social films had a clear stamp of Aspi’s direction.
He must have directed about 50-55 films till the early 80s. Some of his films were,Naya paisa, qaidi no.911,Barood,Shabnam,Badal etc.
On a fine morning on 23rd November 1986,Aspi left his home in the morning for work and never ever returned. No one knows what happened to him.Since then there was no trace of this man and officially he was declared ‘missing since 23-11-1986′. What an end to a legend !

This film had 8 songs, out of which 4 songs were duets of Durrani and Shamshad Begum, None are yetTwo songs from this movie are posted on the blog in the past. Another song from the movie is being discussed here.

The cast of the film was Nirupa Roy ( you will see her dancing on the stage -an unusual role for her), Suresh, Agha, Nazir Kashmiri, Husnbanu, Naaz, Minu, Yaqub etc. The story of the film was…

Astrological predictions some times do come out to be true as it happened in the case of Bankey( Suresh) and Bansi ( Agha), two small kids, about whom the Astrologer foretold that they will feed thousands of hungry souls when they grow up. As they grew up they found themselves employed in a restaurant serving food to thousands of people daily. They however could not stick to their jobs for long, due to their virtue of being too honest. Bade Bhaiya and Chhote Bhaiya, as they fondly called each other, got jobs in a touring carnival little knowing what hazards the fate had in store for them.

However Bade Bhaiya, through sheer strength of his will, used to infuse such a high degree of confidence in Chote Bhaiya that Chote Bhaiya managed to perform most dangerous feats such as Motor Cycle jump, Dare devil ride on motor bike in well of death & plunging into a fire tank from a height of 100ft. They became the heroes of the carnival very soon but they lost no time in losing their her hearts as well. Bade Bhaiya -Agha- fell for Madhuri-Nirupa Roy- the beautiful daughter of the carnival owner and Chhote Bhaiya went mad after another Carnival girl named Bijli-Husn banu.

While the two heroes were trying to win over the love of their respective sweathearts another drama was being enacted between a Jagirdar and his son Manohar( Yaqub), not very far off. The father insisted that the son should marry Lalita-Naaz-, an orphan, brought up by himself, while Manohar, the son, having little belief in marriages refused to accede to this fathers wishes and left his abode and got himself employed as motor driver, to Madhuri. His good looks and his talent as converstionist won him a soft corner in Madhuri’s heart.

Finally, inspite of machinations of Manohar, Madhuri realises her love for Bansi and Manohar goes back to marry Lalita. Bankey and Bijli too are united.

Let us now enjoy a duet from this film, sung by G M Durrani and Shamshad Begum…

jiya mera udta jaaye
jo kadam uthhaaun aaj
wo peechhe mud mud aaye

wo peechhe mud mud aaye
mere dil mein hai ye dar
tujhe lag jaaye kahin na par
yahaan se challo
oy hello saain hello

hum peechhe peechhe aate hain
tum aage aage challo

oy hello saain hello

ye saari duniya jaane
main bhola baalam hoon
ye saari duniya jaane
par tu hai aurat zaat
kisi ki kaise maane
par tu hai aurat zaat
kisi ki kaise maane
tu mujhpe bharosa kar

chale na mujhpar jaadoo
in meethhi baaton ka
chale na mujhpar jaadoo
tum karo bahaane laakh
rakhenge tum pe qaaboo
tum karo bahaane laakh
rakhenge tum pe qaaboo
bura hai zulfon ka ye jaal
udhad jaati hai dil ki khaal
sambhal kal challo

tum aage aage challo

Atul ji,
What I had meant was ‘ none of these 4 duets are yet posted on this blog and the first of these duets is being discussed today.’
