Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 13
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
(1977 – Solo)
When I picked this song for this series, my first reaction was – wow, not yet posted on the blog? I remember from the radio listening days, that this song was very popular in its time. And it still carries a very vibrant appeal that will take the listener to a high. Rafi Sb has sung this song with such zest and abandon, his voice sounding so bright and breezy. Without the visual, the song conjures up images of a playful teasing situation, as the lady seems to be upset and is walking off, being pursued by a persistent lover, who expresses casual disregard for her but also promises that she will be turning back in no time. A promise that is fulfilled, not later than the end of the song.
The film is ‘Dharamveer’ by the maker of super star blockbusters Manmohan Desai. 1977 was the golden year in his career with the release of four of his best – ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘Chacha Bhatija’, ‘Dharamveer’ and ‘Parvarish’. His films need no introductions. Before 1977 and after it also, he is associated with creating hit films with the best of the artists. Scanning through the list of his films, one finds them to be mostly social dramas built to a formula that became gold in his hands. This film, ‘Dharamveer’, is a kind of a departure for him, being a costume drama anchored in some non-specific historical period, with kings and vigilante buccaneers, beautiful princesses and forest romance, palace intrigues and scheming ministers et al.
But in the story line, Manmohan Desai continues to stick to his trusted theme of siblings-lost-and-found. Dharmendra and Jeetendra form the duo opposite to Zeenat Aman and Neetu Singh. Storyline is very predictable. But the music is top ranking. He had a long lasting association with Laxmikant Pyaarelal and Anand Bakshi, and there was a touch of Midas for a period from mid 1970s to mid 1980s, when the music from his films topped the charts.
The three-minute formula works in this song too, albeit with a little catchy variation. As song draws to a close, the lady continues to walk away. The beau follows, singing the last lines. The lady now has a smug smile on her face, knowing that she is still pursued. But an instant change, and she has this ‘feminine intuition’, realizing that probably she is not being pursued. With an alarmed look on her face, she turns around and sees the back of the beau walking away. The formula succeeds yet once again, as now she breaks into a run calling out the gentleman’s name. Wow, it always works out like a charm, in the films. 🙂
A very memorable song from the treasures of 1970s. Listen and enjoy.

Song-O meri mehbooba mehbooba mehbooba (Dharam Veer)(1977) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
O meri mehbooba
mehbooba mehbooba
tujhe jaana hai to jaa
teri marzi mera kya
par dekh jo to roothh kar chali jaayegi
tere saath hi
mere marne ki
khabar jaayegi
o meri mehbooba
mehbooba mehbooba
tujhe jaana hai to jaa
teri marzi mera kya
par dekh jo to roothh kar chali jaayegi
tere saath hi
mere marne ki
khabar jaayegi
o meri mehbooba
mehbooba mehbooba
tujhe jaana hai to jaa
teri marzi mera kya
jo bhi ho meri is prem kahaani ka
par kya hoga teri mast jawaani ka
jo bhi ho meri is prem kahaani ka
par kya hoga teri mast jawaani ka
aashiq hoon main
tere dil mein rehta hoon
apni nahin main tere
dil ki kehta hoon
tauba tauba
phir kya hoga
ke baad mein tu ik roz pachhtaayegi
ye rut pyaar ki
judaai mein hi
guzar jaayegi
o meri mehbooba
mehbooba mehbooba
tujhe jaana hai to jaa
teri marzi mera kya
teri chaahat mera chain churaayegi ee
teri chaahat mera chain churaayegi
lekin tujh ko bhi to neend na aayegi
main to mar jaaunga
le kar naam tera
naam magar kar jaaunga
badnaam tera
tauba tauba
phir kya hoga
ke yaad meri dil tera tadpaayegi
tere jaate hi
tere aane ki
khabar aayegi
o meri mehbooba
mehbooba mehbooba
tujhe jaana hai to jaa
teri marzi mera kya

If we telly the number of Dharmendra and Rafi songs, it may not be too close to Shammi Kapoor and Rafi but may stand second in the list. Anyone has the number?
Rafi saab was 52 and Dharamji was 41 when this movie was released. He sounds younger than Dharamji’s look.
Thanks Sudhirji for reminding this song. 🙂

Interesting! Shashi Kapoor at the second place and then JW, Dharmendra and RK competing by just one number. Are these just solos or duets are included.
Thanks MuVyz ji.(does it mean movies? Just curious)
