Chaandni Raaten – Song No. 9
——————————-

This song is simply my most favourite ‘chaand’ song of the 21st century. The last two decades had a few such music scores in Hindi films, ‘ Khaamoshi ‘ and ‘Parineeta’ are among them which made the decades bearable musically. Favourite ‘chaand’ song from the 90’s is here. Melody in film songs was still trying to keep its head above the general cacophony which passed for music and entertainment.

I have written another post for this song from the movie Parineeta (2005).

Lyricist is Swanand Kirkire who is also co-singing the song with Chitra. The composer is Shantanu Moitra. Apart from the composition the lyrics of the song are such that they strike a chord in the heart.

And the prelude to the song sung by Swanand Kirkire is mentioning a ‘jheengur’ an insect which is the bane of modern households, second only to lizards.

chuppi ki birhaa hai
jheengur ka baaje saaz

And the unique voice of K. S. Chitra, rarely heard in hindi film songs apart from A. R. Rehman’s films, is the star of this song. Another song of hers which is simply unforgettable is this private album song : piya basanti re kaahe sataaye aa jaa.

The song is picturized as the ‘parting of ways’ among the characters, the gulf widening between the two families who are nieghbours and childhood friends as well as secretly married as Shekhar and Lolita. Ego, insecurities and pride play a major part in this story. Ego is the most impractical of all emotions, damaging the fabric of relations.

Interpretation as per my understanding :

ratiyaa aa
kaari kaari ratiyaa
ratiyaa aa
andhiyaari ratiyaa
raat hamaari to
chaand ki saheli hai
kitne dinon ke baad
aayi wo akeli hai
chuppi ki birhaa hai
jhingur ka baaje saaz

O night
O night of blackness
O bleak night of darkness
This night is such a good friend of moon
After ages it has come alone tonight, without the moon
An ode of silence
The requiem to crickets

Raat hamaari to chaand ki saheli hai
kitne dinon ke baad aayi wo akeli hai
samjha ke baati bhi koyi bujhaa de aaj
andhere se jee bhar ke karni hai baaten aaj
andheraa rootthaa hai, andheraa ainthhaa hai
gumsum sa kone mein baithhaa hai

This night is such a good friend of moon
After ages it has come alone tonight, without the moon
someone reason with the lamp, put it off
I have got a lot to talk with the darkness tonight.
Darkness which is sulking, stiffness personified
sitting quietly, having pushed itself into a corner.

Andhera paagal hai kitna ghaneraa hai
chubhta hai dastaa hai phir bhi wo meraa hai
uss ki hi godi mein sar rakh ke sonaa hai
uss ki hi baahon mein chupke se rona hai
aankhon se kaajal ban behtaa andheraa aaj

Darkness has lost its mind, how dense can it be
It pricks, it bites , but still its mine alone
I want to sleep, keep my head on its lap
And weep softly in its arms
Lest the darkness be swept away like kohl from my eyes.

(Andheraa/Darkness is the metaphor for ego and pride.)

Mrs. nahm,

I do not remember who said it (may be a poet). Poetry is the soul of a song. To this, I will add that the music director dresses up the soul and singer does ornamentation. But both the music director and the singer should have a sense of proportion so that the dresses and ornaments do not look (sound) gaudy. This is one of those songs where a good poetry has been nicely dressed up with a perfect ornamentation. A heart touching song.

This is one of those songs in Hindi films which, though beautifully crafted , got lost in the midst of other popular songs of the same film. Thanks bringing it to the notice of the readers of this Blog.

By the way, if you have still not done with ‘Chaandni Raat’ series, I suggest you to consider writing on ‘raaten thhi chaandni joban pe thhi bahaar’ from MERE SAAJAN 1941 sung by Rafique Ghaznavi and Amirbai Karnataki. It is a melodious song with good lyrics by Wahid Qureshi.

Sir,

You said it well. We do see good poetry being turned into trash due to gory music arrangements and singers trying to do too much.

This song is one of the reasons for doing this series. The series is still a long way from getting over. I will do a post of the song from ‘Mere Saajan’ 1941, suggested by you. The movie is not yet represented on the blog.

If you have ‘Chaandni Raaten’ song by Talat Mehmood & Mukesh kindly let me know the details. I am looking for a Talat Mehmood & Mukesh song for this series.

Thanks and regards.

A few of the songs of ‘chaandni raaten’ rendered by Mukesh and Talat Mehmood which I remember have already been covered in the Blog. Even a cursory check in YT did not yield results. If I come across their songs, I will let you know.

In the meanwhile, I got a few songs of other singers which you may be already aware of. but nonetheless, I give below the details of songs.

1. chaandni raat hai kaisi suhaani by Shamshad Begum from DIL KI DUNIYA, 1949

2. chaandni chitki yuyi hai muskuraati raat hai
Duet by Geeta Dutt and Rafi from HAMAARA GHAR, 195O.

3. inn chaandni raaton mein yaad kyun aatey ho
Duet by Meena Kapoor and Zohrabai Ambalewali from
USHA KIRAN, 1952.

4. taare hain baaraati chaandni hai baaraat
Duet by Kumar Sanu and Jaspinder Narula from
VIRAASAT, 1997
