‘Parineeta’ (2005) is one of the aesthetically better movies of the last decade. I had seen this movie on cable TV, but had liked the movie and songs a lot. The movie, cinematography and the understated treatment of the adapted story from Saratchandra Chatterjee’s classic literary piece, were impressive. It is a glamorously packaged product with the subtle nuances. It is directed by Pradeep Sarkar and had Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan playing the lead roles, with supporting cast of Sanjay Dutt, Dia Mirza, Raima Sen etc. Its crisp editing is also a feature that I had noted back than, while watching the film.

It was debut of Vidya Balan in hindi films and for Saif Ali Khan it was a coming of age film, where people sat up and took notice. He seems to have stopped aging since those days. Vidya Balan and the character of Lolita suited each other. I have never seen her looking more beautiful than she did in this Bengali setting.

One of those lovely songs of the film is this train song. Picturized in the Darjeeling on that mini train which is part of hindi film folklore right from the days of ‘Jab pyar kisi se hota hai’, ‘Professor’ and ‘Aradhana’. Saif Ali Khan is coming to Darjeeling to attend to some business and is seeing Vidya Balan wherever he looks. Shantanu Moitra’s music, Swanand Kirkire’s lyrics and sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal, this song is by completely ‘S’ team. Shantanu Moitra and Swanand Kirkire are a team of many films by now. Swanand Kirkire sings too. I am planning on posting some more songs where Swanand Kirkire is singing.

This songs starts with a line in what seems to be Nepali language. The lines means ” life is like a roller coaster ride……..” .

The video is a bit shortened version used in the film, but the lyrics are as per the audio version.
A whole lot of information and user reviews are available at imbd site for this film. I have read some comments that this movie should have gone to oscars.

I have strong opinion about this. That jury which is programmed to appreciate the superhuman (read inhuman) heroes who are imaginary and totally fictitious, have no basis is reality , will have no appreciation of our human characters, their failings and frustrations, their dramas and romance. Let alone the metaphors which require two hours plus of songs tears and dialogue’s to culminate.

Better option is for our numerous award organisers to add a foreign film category and let hollywood films clamour for this coveted award 😉 . Too far fetched may be, but it can happen. If China were as entertainment-centric as Indians are, they would have achieved this feat by now.

So let’s forget about the oscars and enjoy the fresh air of Darjeeling which is humming this song.
