So today (1 january 2015) heralds the arrival of a new year viz 2015. Many people try to go to a new year heralding get together parties but I did not share their enthusiasm and decided to keep indoors, considering the weather conditions. I feel that the weather conditions this time are colder and bleaker than they were the previous year and I feel that the advisable thing to do under the circumstances is to bid one’s time and hope that this kind of weather will go away in a few weeks.

So, I was more or less asleep when the new year arrived at midnight. I was woken up by calls from my wife and daughter who wished me happy new year. My wife was “celebrating” the new year indoors like me, but I could tell that the daughter was having a new year party with her friends.

I was woken up when my dogs wanted to go out after midnight. I was woken up again after half an hour when Chhote wanted to come back. Then I was woken up an hour later when Bhhole too came back and growled at Chhote for not keeping him company outside.

All this while it was raining as well, making the new year literally a gloomy affair and a damp squib.

These days I do not wake up early unlike in the past when I would be wide awake at 4 AM , much to the chagrin of my wife if she was around, but much to the glee of my dogs of course. In any case my dogs can wake me up at any time in the night (as exemplified above) and I do not mind.

When I finally decided to get up and checked the time, it was 7:40 ! I do not recall when was the last time I woke up this late. But I am not one who belive that the first day of the year shows the year. 🙂 It is like judging a cricketer by his performance in his debut test. Most cricketers (especially Indians) fail in their debut matches 🙂 before some of them establish themselves. I am sure that things can only get better in the year as days pass. 🙂

When I checked up the blog, I found that two more posts had come up, one each on either side of the midnight. So Sudhir ji, despite facing even worse weather conditions than me was awake when the new year came up. 🙂

I too have some special songs in mind that I would like to discuss today. Here is the first of these songs. This song is SPECIAL, because it is the very first song of Talat Mehmood. This song was recorded in 1941. This NFS was written by Faiyyaz Hashmi and music was composed by Kamal Dasgupta.

Knowledeable readers would wonder how this song was missing from the blog till now. As for now, I became knowledgeable about this song only just now when the lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

And what a smashing debut by Talat Mehmood, unlike my beginning of this year. 🙂

I take this opportunity to wish all the visitors, readers , contributors and well wishers of this blog a very happy and prosperous new year 2015.

Song-Sab din ek samaan nahin thhaa (Talat Mehmood NFS)(1941) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Faiyyaz Hashmi, MD-Kamal Dasgupta

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

Sab din ek samaan nahin thha
sab din ek samaan nahin thha
ban jaaungaa kya se kya main

banaa main uski jeewan chhaaya aa
banaa main uski jeewan chhaaya
mera gulshan haraa bharaa thha
mera gulshan haraa bharaa tha
ujdaa ya sunsaan nahin thha
ujdaa ya sunsaan nahin thha
sab din ek samaan nahin thha

uske galey ka haar kabhi thha
mujhse usko pyaar kabhi thha
uske galey ka haar kabhi thha
mujhse usko pyaar kabhi thha
basaa huaa sansaar hriday ka
basaa huaa sansaar hriday ka
sab din to shamshaan nahin thha
sab din to shamshaan nahin thha
sab din ek samaan nahin thha

kabhi geet jo hans kar gaaya
ro kar usko ab dohraaya
kabhi geet jo hanskar gaaya
ro kar usko o ab dohraaya
main thha swaami sukh nagri ka
main thha swaami sukh nagri ka
dukh ka to mehmaan nahin thha
dukh ka to mehmaan nahin thha
sab din ek samaan nahin thha
sab din ek samaan nahin thha aa

@ Atul ji – many many thanks for this lovely ‘gift’ to start the new year 2015 🙂 and now I can hope that this will be a ‘good’ year for my contributions to come 🙂
As far as the ‘celebrations’ are concerned – for me it get started with this post (since for so many years specially on 31st Dec, I could not hold beyond my normal time of going to sleep, and thereafter at midnight my family members keep wishing me ‘happy new year’ when I am in sleep… 🙂
Small corrections please :-
the title of the song – ‘sab din ek samaan nahin thha ‘
– After sharing the lyrics to you I doubt if I was right in correcting it ‘kab din ek samaan nahin thha’ or ‘sab din ek samaan nahin thha’,

BUT, at ‘sab din to shamshaan nahin thha’ , I feel it needs to corrected as ‘tab din to shamshaan nahin thha’ , Kindly review please.
Thanks a lot !!!

Dear Atul ji,
At the outset, I extend my best wishes for a wonderful 2015 for you & your family.
Thanks a lot for featuring my most favourite singer, who coincidentally also happens to hail from my city of Lucknow, and that too with his very first song. You have made my day, Sir. As far as I am concerned, the beginning of the year couldn’t have been better. Yes, I too wonder how this song had so far escaped the attention of our hawk-eyed stalwarts, who are constantly striving to dive into the unfathomable depths of the HFM ocean to present rarest of gems for us listeners.
Kindly allow me to exploit this forum for wishing all the ASAD fraternity for the most joyful time throughout the year.
Warm regards,
Avadh Lal

I am sure Avadhlalji and others would have noticed the style of singing which is very much unlike the latter days of Talat. A distinct influence of his contemporaries can be easily discerned even to the uninitiated. I thought I heard some Bangla sur.

The duo of Faiyyaz Hashmi and Kamal Dasgupta have given us many gems which are yet to see the day in the blog.
