A music director whose songs are loved by even today’s youngsters. Yes, it is the son of the Sachin Dev Burman and Meera Burman that we are missing today from among our midst.

Remembering RD Burman on the anniversary of his passing away (4th Jan).

There was a time in the eighties; the period when a few of the now current regular blog visitors / contributors had given up on HFM. Why, only they know. (And their reasons may sound valid). But I was still addicted to HFM, which I believe I still am. That was the time we had a few star sons making their career debuts viz. Sunny Deol, Kumar Gaurav, Sanjay Dutt etc. One thing that ran common in them was all their debut movies had to have music by R.D.Burman. And the songs in these movies did not disappoint. We had the melodious “Yaad Aa Rahi Hai” in Kumar Gaurav’s “Love Story” (1981); “Hum Tumse Mile Phir Juda Ho Gaye” In Sanjay Dutt’s “Rocky” (1981); “Jab Hum Jawan Honge” in Sunny Deol’s “Betaab” (1984). All very good romantic numbers showcasing various moods of romance. There were also similar wonderful songs in other movies by R. D. Burman in that period.  So we can safely say that RDB’s songs were not only all sound and mindless experimentation with random musical instruments but also well thought melody. We also hear of anecdotes by people in the film fraternity who swear on their devotion to RDB. As if to prove a point we had a full length movie in 2002 “Dil Vil Pyar Vyar” by Anant Mahadevan which had all the songs by RDB all re-recorded in the voices of playback singers who would proudly say that they were fans of RDB and his music. The recording was by Babloo Chakravarty. But there was no cause for complaint about the songs having been killed by this venture. That movie had songs like “Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai”; “O Hansini Meri Hansini”; “Kya Janoo Sajan Hoti Hai Kya Ghum Ki Shaam” etc. (I strongly recommend a dekho of this movie to our Atulwaasis).

So now today we will focus on this romantic song from the 1981 Sanjay Dutt debut movie “Rocky”. Iss gaane ko likha hai Majrooh Sultanpuri ji ne, gaaya hai Kishore Kumar aur Lata Mangeshkar ne, aur parde par hain “a very vulnerable looking Sanjay Dutt and Tina Munim”.

[PS: with this song, the film ‘Rocky’ (1981) makes a debut on this blog today.]

Song – Kya Yahi Pyaar Hai (Rocky) (1981) Singers – Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangehskar, Lyrics – Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD – RD Burman
Kishore + Lata

kya yahi pyaar hai
haan yahi pyaar hai
ho dil tere bin kahin lagta nahin
waqt guzarataa nahin
kya yahi pyaar hai
haan haan
haan yahi pyaar hai
ho dil tere bin kahni lagataa nahin
waqt guzarataa nahin
kya yahi pyaar hai
haan yahi pyaar hai
pehle main samjhaa
kuchh aur vajeh in baaton ki
lekin ab jaanaa
kahaan neend gayi meri raaton ki
jaagti rehti hoon main bhi
chaand nikaltaa nahin
oo oo dil tere bin kahin lagataa nahin
waqt guzarataa nahin
kya yahi pyaar hai
bolo na

haan yahi pyaar hai

kaise bhoolungi
tu yaad hamesha aayega
tere jaane se
jeena mushkil ho jaayega
ab kuchh bhi ho dil pe koi
zor to chalta nahin
dil tere bin kahin lagataa nahin
waqt guzarataa nahin
kya yahi pyaar hai
haan yahi pyaar hai

jaise phoolon ke
mausam mein yeh dil khilte hain
premi aise hi
kya patajhad me bhi milate hain
rut badle
duniyaa badle
pyaar badalta nahi
oo ooo
dil tere bin kahin lagataa nahin
waqt guzarataa nahin
kya yahi pyaar hai
haan yehi pyaar hai
ho dil tere bin kahin lagataa nahin
waqt guzarataa nahin
hmmm hmm hmm
