Mohammed Rafi – The Incomparable – 2
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

We all know that Mohammed Rafi Sb is the one playback who had many singers copying and imitating his singing style during his lifetime.  After his passing away, the tendency only increased.  There are a few shining examples like Sonu Nigam who started with Rafi Sb’s style and made a name for themselves.  He is, in my view, closely followed by Udit Narayan and Mohammed Aziz.  During the 1970s, when Rafi Sb was alive, there was Anwar who reportedly trained under him, and Rafi Sb himself regarded him highly.  All these singers strived to imitate the inimitable Rafi magic.

I dare to mention even Mahendra Kapoor in this category of Rafi imitators for he too did manage to replicate an aspect of his style and voice in a few songs.  So much so that some less informed people thought some of the famous Rafi songs are sung by Mahendra Kapoor.  I was shocked beyond belief when a college friend said that “Baabul Ki Duaa’en Leti Jaa” (‘Neelkamal’, 1968), the award winning bidaai song was sung by Mahendra Kapoor!

All of the above mentioned singers have the highest regard for Rafi Sb, and it reflects in their evolution as successful playback singers.

Still in so many ways and hues, Rafi Sb remains inimitable.  I have a long list of solo songs prepared for this series. The recently posted song from Bazaar(1950) – “Ye Hai Duniya Ka Baazaar“, is also one of this list.  But it does not matter as there are quite a few of his songs even from the early period which are not yet posted.

The inimitable Rafi style of romantic song is evident in this non-film ghazal ‘Shab Ki Tanhaai Mein Jab Bhi Mujh Ko Yaad Aate Ho Tum’.  This is also amongst those non films ghazals by Rafi Sb about which details of the lyricist and composer are not available.  It is essentially a simple rendition with none of murkiyan or harkatien involved in the usual film songs.  But the gaayaki here is more touching.

Song – Shab Ki Tanhaai Mein Jab Bhi (NFS – Mohammed Rafi) (19xx) Singers – Mohammed RafiLyrics – (Unattributed), MD – (Unattributed)

Lyrics

shab ki tanhaai mein jab bhi
mujh ko yaad aate ho tum mere
dhadkane ban ke
dil mein samaa jaate ho tum

chaudhvin ka chaand
chhup jaata hai baadal mein kahin
chaudhvin ka chaand
chhup jaata hai baadal mein kahin
jab naqaab apne
rukh-e-raushan se sarkaate ho tum
dhadkane ban kar mere dil mein
samaa jaate ho tum

Allah Allah kya qayaamat hai
ke raah e hosh mein
justujoo kartaa hoon apni
aur mil jaate ho tum
dhadkane ban kar mere dil mein
samaa jaate ho tum

jaa nahin saktaa tumhaari
bazm se utthh kar kahin
jaa nahin saktaa tumhaari
bazm se utthh kar kahin
zulf ke qaidi ko kyun
zanjeer pehnaate ho tum
dhadkane ban kar mere dil mein
samaa jaate ho tum
shab ki tanhaai mein jab bhi
mujh ko yaad aate ho tum

Nahmji,
Where did you get the gem of a NFS from. Of late I have scouring through the Net for his NFS. I have about 40 NFS of Rafi. If you want I can pass on to you.
Yep it is true MK was copying Rafi in Soni Mahiwal songs.Naushad could have stopped him but he did not.
But Neelkamal story above is atrocious.
At the risk of repetition Sehra song of taqdeer ka fasana was sung by MK on the insistence of V Shantaram(post Navrang and Stree), but Ramlal could not sleep the whole night as the song was not what he had conceptualized. He timidly suggested(it was his first assignment) to VS> let us get it sung by Rafi and then we can pick and choose. After lot of persuasion he agreed. No prizes for guessing what happened!
The closest who came near to Rafi was Anwar. usne sab ki khatiya khadi kar di. They packed him off for a long world tour and he was forgotten by the MDs.
There was one Mangal Singh who also came closest to Rafi

I accidentally found this on youtube, had saved the link to be used later. NFS are mostly available of youtube, if I need any song will let you know.

I did not mention Suresh Wadkar who has followed Rafi ‘s singing style. Shabbir Kumar is another one of those. Mangal Singh you mention was the one famous in orchestra’s, he never came to playback singing. If I know correctly then he is the one who was able to able to imitate many singers including female ones.

Dear friend,
Good article but wrong in case of Mahendra Kapoor saab. Just to inform you he was the only puple Rafisaab ever had. MK & MR were shishy & Gur for many years till Mk started formal training in classical music under Usta Niyaz ahmed khan and gradually developed his own style. Rest be it Anwar or Sonu only aped Rafi sahab. Till they lived MK & Rafi shared a great relation.
