MAN KI JEET (1944) was one of the most successful films produced by W Z Ahmed under his banner of Shalimar Films. The film had 7 songs including one version song of which 4 songs (including the version song) have been covered in the Blog. Almost all the songs of the film were popular in those days. The highlight of these songs were that for the first time, Shaayar e Inqilaab Josh Malihabadi wrote lyrics for 5 out of 7 songs for the film. The rest of 2 songs were written by Bharat Vyas. The star cast included Shyam, Neena, Tiwari, Prakash, Rajkumari Shukla, Gulab, Mumtaz Begum, Shanta Thakkar, Chukoo etc. This was the debut Hindi film for the actor Shyam. This may also be a debut film for Chukoo on which morey jubna ka dekho ubhaar was picturised. Of course, Sitarabai Kanpuri started her playback singing career with this film.

The Many Colors of Love #29 – The Stories of Broken Hearts
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe

ik dil ke tukde hazaar huye
koi yahaan gira koi wahaan gira
(‘Pyaar Ki Jeet’, 1948)

Walking the passages of love, one encounters enchanting emotions and charming music – heady feelings that will lure heart and mind into gardens with blossoming springs, chirping birds and fragrant flowers.  But the discerning eyes will also see, the pathways strewn with fragile fragments, unobtrusively lying by the side, that tell another story.  These are the delicate pieces of broken hearts that have suffered the pains of separation and the agony of desertion, an agony that is at times, too intense for the sensitive hearts to bear.  And the feelings inside are as if the heart has been torn asunder, crushed and broken into a thousand pieces.  And then thrown by the wayside.

‘Rafi Ke Dard Bhare Geet’ is a famous genre of Rafi songs.  Some of the most endearing and touching songs in Hindi films are the sad songs sung by Rafi Sb.  Almost every hindi movie has a sad song.  Amongst them, the soulful singing by Rafi Sb in these songs is widely acknowledgde as the best.  There are many movies where Rafi Sb has only one song even when he is not the favored singing voice for the film.  That song generally is a song for the second line artist, or a background song, or a title song, and in many cases, it is a sad song.  Then there are many movies in which all male songs are in the voice of Rafi Sb.  There are movies where he sang romantic song, light hearted song, sad song, comic song, qawwali, folk and spiritual songs for different actors.  There are numerous examples for both these cases.

Missing gems from 1950s-Song 2
———————————–

Today’s song is a Gem from the film Jhaanjhar-1953.

This was the first film produced by New Sai productions, a company floated by Chitalkar, Omprakash and his only brother Bakshi Ramprakash Chhibber (who took up the name ‘Pachhi’ later on and produced many films like Kanhaiya, Jaali Note, Naughty Boy, Mere Mehboob, Cha ch cha, Teesri Kasam, Around the world etc etc.). many people are under the misunderstanding that even Lata mangeshkar was a partner in this venture, But C.Ramchandra, in his autobiography mentions only these three names as partners. However, at the same time, C Ramchandra and Lata were partners in another company along with a man called P R Bhide, who cheated them later and also dragged both to courts. Lata and C Ramchandra came out of this without any harm, though.

Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 6
—————————————————–

Aha, a very fragrant addition to this series.  We now have a song that is sung by the seller of ‘itra’, or ‘attar’ or Indian fragrant oils.

The word ‘attar’ ‘itr’ brings to mind the sensations of exotic perfumes, that is a world and a vocabulary all by itself.  It also brings with itself, the long list of glamorous and mysterious names such as Zaafraan, Shamaama, Majmuha, Motia, Raajgir, Chameli, Chandan (or Sandal), Firdaus, Nargis, Mushq-Amber, Gulab, Kesar (Saffron), Khas, Kasturi and many more.  These fragrant oils from India, are prepared from natural plant sources viz. flower petals, leaves, wood and plant resins.  (Except for ‘Kasturi’ (Musk), which is derived from animal origin viz. the musk deers.  Pure and authentic ‘Kasturi’ is a very rare thing to locate these days.  A sure test of its authenticity is that if you bring just a few grains of pure Kasturi near your nostrils, you will have a nosebleed, such is the power of this aroma.)

This iconic song from ‘Pyasa” was posted in the blog way back in 2009. I just revisited the page. There is only one comment there, so I was in two minds whether to leave my take on this song there on the page or include them in this post . I choose the latter so here goes:

The best thing about Holi songs is that in most cases, the message of colors is immediately apparent in the coloring of the lyrics. The songs get created in the spirit of Holi itself. It is a social and group celebrations, and the songs of this festival are sung by multiple singers, and performed by a multitude of players on the screen. And as we sit down to color code the lyrics, the resulting view is as colorful as the festival itself.
