Chhota Sa Pappu Hoon Jaaun Kahaan

If I were to ask you to let me post a special song for a special anniversary that is already belated by six days, as opposed to waiting for 360 more days to post this celebration song, what would you say?  And if I told you that the anniversary is really special, extra special; then?  I have a confident feeling that you will say – ok, well, go ahead, post the special song, and tell us what the celebration is.

And now, taking this feeling of confidence further, I now know that I have your full support in posting this special song today, no matter that we are six days delayed in making this celebration.

And so considering the weight of all your votes in my favor, I am going ahead with the posting of this song, for a very special celebration that is overdue now by six days.  I know that six days is maybe a bit too much to stretch for a belated greetings, but then sometimes the celebration is so special that it does not feel good at all to miss it.  Notwithstanding the delay, it is seems too much to let it roll and wait for 360 days.  Gosh, 360 days, sounds so intimidating, almost like a whole year.  Well of course, it is almost a whole year of waiting, less six days.  That is why is seems like a whole year.  (Actually, a leap year – 2016).

You know, it has happened with me earlier.  There have been times that I have missed some anniversary dates, and I let the posts lie idle for a full year and posted them finally on the next anniversary. I remember it happened with one song for Kabir Bedi, and another time with Sharmila Tagore.  Both these posts actually went around one full year in my draft box, because I missed the date first time around.  Goodness, now I recall, there is a anniversary celebration post sitting and waiting for two years; I missed it earlier this year, after having promised Atul ji I would do it.  But then , for various reasons, it did not materialize. Now it has to wait for the next year to come around.  😦

So in a way it is good that you have agreed to support this delayed posting by me.  Otherwise, another full year would have to roll around before this date would have come around.  Achha hai, it is good,  jo kaam ho jaaye wo theek hai (whatever gets done is good).  You know this delayed post reminds me of the one occasion when . . .

OK, ok, I can almost see the message coming – what has become of him (i.e. me) today, being so exasperatingly facetious and so infuriatingly annoying, circumscribing around every tree, plant, shrub, bush, hedge and grass leaf that is there, irritatingly distracting the thought process from the main point.

Ah yes, the main point – the special celebration that is six days old now.  OK, ok, I will not repeat it again. (Wo, that is bad grammar – ’repeat again’; double qualifier).  Ok, ok, enough said, you can let the ‘danda’ lie in the corner. 🙂

But I will definitely want to add that this anniversary was re-mind-ed into my mind over a couple of email exchanges that happened with our Dear Arunji, earlier this week.  I was mistakenly thinking July, but then Arun ji corrected me and put me on the right track.  Ah but, I digress once again.  Let us get back to the point.

Aisa hai, 20th June ko, we passed by the birthday of our fearless leader, Raanchiwaala Gaanewaala.  It was a Saturday. Three innocuous looking posts  materialized that day, but no mention of any celebration in either of them.

Belatedly wishing Atul ji, a belated and a very happy and healthy many returns of this special day.

This song has been waiting with me since the time I dug out the songs of the film ‘Jaldeep’, a 1956 production from the Childrens’ Film Society of India.  When I extracted and heard this song, the first that popped in my mind was Atul ji’s name. And I decided this song will have to be a special present to him, on his special day.

You see, this is a dog song.  But not that it is just a dog song, it is a song that tells the story of a homeless pup who is looking to be taken in by a friendly soul.  As soon as the words and the theme of the song reached into me, I had this vision of Chhotu and Bholu, when they were taken into the Besra household.  And immediately this song was earmarked as a present for Atul ji.  Listen and see the performance of the kids, and you will understand.

Setting the context, here is a brief backdrop to this song.  The three children appearing in this clip are siblings in this film’s storyline.  The elder male child and the female child are brother-sister and the younger child, who performs the major part of the song, is probably a cousin.  The child actor names are – the elder male child is Ashok Sharma (son of Kidar Sharma).  The female child is Preetibala, who later came into mainstream Hindi films as Zeb Rehman.  The younger male child is Dubey.  I would appreciate if someone is to add more information about Dubey.  Is he related to character actor CS Dubey.  The plumpishness and the rotund face seem a reflection of CS Dubey’s features and physique, but I may just be imagining.  I request other knowledgeable readers to please comment on this.

The three of them have to take a boat to go to a small island, to visit a lighthouse.  As they are waiting for the boat and the boatman to come, Ashok feels hungry, and requests for a sandwich, from the food basket, put together by their mother. Dubey was carrying the basket, and he hesitates. Ashok smells something fishy, and he reaches out and takes off the cloth cover of the basket.  He has a surprise waiting for him.  Instead of sandwiches, he sees a small black puppy sitting the basket.  As it has transpired on their walk to the boat landing, Dubey came across this stray puppy, who seemed to be lost and frightened.  Moved with sympathy, he quietly picked up the puppy and loaded him into food basket while Ashok is not looking.  Now what will a hungry puppy do when placed in a food basket.  Of course, the first thing will be to have a gorging feast, as he is merrily being carried, undisturbed and under covers.

Ashok gets upset, and he threatens to throw the puppy into the water.  Dubey pleads and protests, and Preetibala joins him.  Ashok is upset, plus he is also hungry, and all sandwiches have been devoured by the stray puppy who has taken ‘panaah’ (asylum) with Dubey.  So at this point Dubey breaks into this song, expressing the sentiments from the puppy’s perspective, requesting to be allowed to join the family.

It is a real fun song.  A rarity coming from this obscure film, I located it as I was searching for the songs that KL Pandey ji had requested me to locate.  I have written about that in the article on the first song of this movie that I had posted earlier – “Dekhi Dekhi Dekhi Panchhi Dekhi Ye Phulwari”.  The lyrics are from the pen of Himmat Rai Sharma, elder brother to Kidar Sharma. We find his name frequently in the credits for the films produced by Kidar Sharma.  Music is by Snehal Bhatkar.  The singing voices are not credited.  It could be the children themselves who are performing it on screen, i.e. Dubey and Preetibala.  But that is an unconfirmed thought.

Coming back to the celebration.  Atul ji, many many many many. . . . . happy returns of this wonderful day (20th June), and a ton of good wishes for many many years of a healthy, peaceful and musicated continuation.

May your blog increase. . .

[Update to post – 21 Dec, 2018]
The names of the singers are now available, after consultation with Shri Girdharilal ji of Jodhpur. The voices are of the children themselves – Dubey and Preetibala. So my earlier guess was not wrong.

Thanks Girdharilal ji.

Toool pai you are pappu? Kaunsa pappu? Vo pappu kan’t dance saala waala? Can this pappu dance? Is this pappu better than the Pappu of Nation? So many kochans not many answers!!!

Happy belated pappu day mere birthday dost.. err sorry happy birthday mere pappu dost.. err.. Atul pai. Bahut konfuse karte ho ji.. (Your song selection got you into this.. don’t blame me).

Belated Happy Birthday Wishes to you Atul Sir !!
All the Best !!

@ Sudhir ji – thanks for the post !!
Yes, a post specially mentioning the celebration was required indeed, I thought it will come from Raja ji,
Though we have posted our wishes in the group and on this post by Atul ji here https://atulsongaday.me/2015/06/20/man-ke-taar-hilaa-jaa/

Raja pai was last spotted chasing a gondola full of Italian girls (hoping one of them is our Sonia Gandhi) and is presently in Venice trying his luck. Rumors has it that he was wearing a red swim suit. We shall report more developments as they become available.

Goodness, is he STILL wearing the red swim suit?

Constant consistency, thy name is Mastermind.
🙂

Ah yes, Avinash ji,
I had seen the song post in email, but not the comments as they came, so missed the opportunity on the day.
All the delays notwithstanding, Atul ji’s comment has made it all worthwhile.

Thanks a lot ! The first person to wish me was was my daughter who did it one minute past midnight. 🙂 The last person to do it that day was my wife. 🙂 Many people (mostly online friends had greeted me in the meanwhile).

This is easily the most belated greeting. But it is accompanied with the most valuable gift that one can hope for- a rare dog song. And what a cute song with heartwarming lyrics. How this song comes about in the movie also makes for sweet reading. I am reminded of many such sweet tales about my two pets (plus more that I had). This song is a great birthday song for my pets too. 🙂 Thanks a lot for this song, perhaps the best and most sensitive dog song ever in Hindi movies.

Atul ji,

I am so glad that you liked this ‘present’.
Yes, it is a very sweet song, and very endearingly performed on screen.

Cheers and regards
Sudhir

OOps I did not see the video and so assumed pappu was name of a person.. sorry bro. Did not mean to insult you at all was just pulling your leg a bit. My bad. Happy birthday mon.

Its rare Song . Ashok Sharma &Tanuja ‘s first film was Hamari Yaad aayengi don’t know which year it was but master Dubey was also in that film pilfering all sweets and savory in mela with Tanuja. Nice song indeed . Sudhir saab .

Atul ji,

I was in communication with Girdharilal ji (of Jodhpur), and he has confirmed the names of the singers of this song. It is the child actors themselves – Dubey and Preetibala.
I have updated the post accordingly.
