Hullo to all at Atuldom

The rains always send me down memory lane. Whether it is the June to September cycle of the Indian monsoon or the unexpected rains that happen in the connection with the low pressures in the Bay Of Bengal sometime during October – November. Now going back to my school days, I remember that it is all geographical phenomena that brings rain in oct- Nov. but the June rains have more memories attached to them than the winter rains. Our schools used to reopen post summer vacations in June. And the rainy season; as we in Mumbai knew it; would promptly arrive in the second week of June with heavy downpours, water logging and forced closure of schools giving us additional holidays. (Yes; that was common even thirty years ago as it is today when all and sundry cry foul about the bad drainages.)

On one such rainy day (for the only time in my life) I decided to bunk classes along with a friend of mine. She wanted to see this new release which she said had her RAKHI BROTHER in a bit role. It was later that I came to know that the person was also an assistant to Subhash Ghai. (I don’t remember that artist/ assistant’s name.) So for the first time in my life I went for a movie (1) without my dear dad and (2) also bunked classes. There were repercussions to the outing in the form of being caught by the class teacher herself who happened to be in the vicinity of the movie hall. Then I had to call my parents for the teachers to complain. And a final dressing down at the hands of my dad (mom was not taking sides with me but she never got angry with me.)

Now the movie that brought the above experience was Subhash Ghai’s Hero. This movie had Subhash Ghai launch his own banner Mukta Arts with an emblem of a huge Spotlight that is used in studios for lighting. It showed the silhouette of a lady in dance costume with a man on the other side. That was how he introduced Meenakshi Seshadri and Jackie Shroff to Bollywood. Ghai used this form of his emblem for quite a few films of his. The movie was Jackie Shroff’s debut and Meenakshi’s third movie. But this was her first Jubilee hit. She went on to star in a number of good to great movies in her career spanning thirteen years till she got married in 1996. She made a lovely combo with all her heroes be it Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Rajesh Khanna, Rishi Kapoor or the younger set of Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff or Govinda. Recently there was news that she might make a return to movies in a sequel to her hugely successful “Ghaayal”. How I wish it was more than a news, it would have been great to see her on screen again.

Back then we used to have Miss India contests conducted by two magazines which essentially catered to entertaining and educating ladies—Femina from the Times Of India stable and Eve’s Weekly. Meenakshi Seshadri was a Eve’s Weekly Miss India of the year 1981. She debuted in Manoj Kumar’s’ “Painter Babu” alongside his brother Rajiv Goswami. She had thought of giving up on Bollywood when the movie failed but did “Hero” on Ghai’s encouragement and then there was no looking back.

In keeping with the weather here in Bangalore let us have a song from Ghai’s “Hero” which also was Meenakshi’s introductory dance in the movie today on the occasion of her 51st birthday. (Aisa Mausam dekha pehli baar- jab savere nindiya se jaage-malhaar gaane ka jee karta hain.) this song was a perfect show case of her beauty, grace and dancing abilities. It was written by Anand Bakshi and Laxmi-Pyare are the music directors. The song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

Thanks for the post. Meenakshi Seshadri was a competent actress..She left a permanent stamp as ‘ Damini ‘, which was her very best.

I think tune of this song got some shades of Lata Solo/L.P. “Suno Sajna, papeehe ne, kahaa sab se pukaar ke………..,ke aaye din bahaar ke” from “Aaye Din Bahaar ke”(Laxmi-Pyare)
