Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 24
———————————————————

MEENA (1944) appears to be an obscure movie at least to me as I had never heard nor came across the name of this film until I found a multiple version song from the film a few days back. The film was produced under the banner of Bharat Pictures and was directed by Phani Majumdar. The star cast included Hansa Wadkar, Vasanti, Master Shashi Kapoor (Sr.), Dixit, Gulab, Ratan Piya, Anand etc. There were 7 songs (including a multiple version) in the film, all penned by Pandit Phani which were set to music by Hari Prasanna Das.

I could get mp3 clip of only one song in multiple version from which I could guess that the film belonged to social genre. The song is ‘kyun jaane apne banten hain begaane’. The happy version is sung by Manna Dey and a female voice which I am not able to identify. The sad version is sung by the same unidentified female voice but I feel that there is also a second female voice. My guess is that since Hansa Wadkar and Vasanti have acted in this film and both had sung songs in their earlier films, either or both of them may have sung this song as well. I hope that our knowledgeable readers  would be able to crack the names of the female singers in the song.

The tune and orchestration of the song remind me of ‘Calcutta school of film music’ which relied mainly on Rabindra Sangeet. One can say that music directors R C Boral and later more prominently,  Pankaj Mullick brought this brand of music in Hindi films. I also have a feeling that the orchestration in the song was influenced by the orchestration style of Francisco Casanova who used to play band in Grand Hotel, Calcutta (Kolkata) in the 40s. Just listen to the his orchestration under the music direction of Pankaj Mullick in NFS “Praan Chaahe Nain Na Chaahe“.

I fell in love with this song when I first heard it in mp3 clip. Apart from a good rendition of the song by Manna Dey and the  female voices, the lyrics has a philosophical tone which appealed to me. Have we not faced a situation when our own people become unfamiliar over a period of time? In our life, we meet scores of unknown persons some of whom become well known to us later. Example: ‘Mil Jaate Hain Kai Anjaane’  in Atulites gang-outs 🙂

I have prepared a combined video clip of both the versions of the song from the mp3 clip which I have uploaded on YT.

Sadanand ji,

Truly said; this is a mesmerizing song that I have already played many times. And yes, unmistakable imprint of the Boral-Mullick school of orchestration.

A real lovely song.

Sudhir ji,

Thanks for appreciating the song.
Your validation of Boral-Mullick style of music has strengthened my feeling about the song.

Sadanand ji,

Very good song indeed.
However,I very much doubt if the singer is Manna Dey, though he sounds like him at places. The official site of Manna Dey also lists only 6 songs in 1944. ( 2-kadambari, 2-Mahakavi Kalidas, 1-Jwar Bhata and 1-Kavita. The above song is not one of them. This needs investigation. The female voice seems more like Vasanti.

The male voice sounds very much like Manna Dey to me. If the voice is not credited in Manna Dey’s site then it means that this song could well turn out to be a “new” discovery of a Manna Dey song. The voice may sound somewhat different because the singer was trying to sing in the existing singing style of other leading Calcutta based singers of that time.

Arun ji,

To me, the male voice sounds very much of Manna Dey. Just listen to his song ‘ o prem deewani’ from KAADAMBARI (1944) also composed by Hari Prasanna Das. The singing style in this song as well as the song under discussion is, more or less the same.

Incidentally, I had read somewhere that Manna Dey assisted Hari Prasanna Das in a couple of films in early 40s.
