Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 41
——————————————-
GEET GOVIND (1947) was a film based on the epic poem ‘Geeta Govinda’ written by the 12th century Sanskrit poet Jayadeva, depicting the divine love of Radha and Krishna. This work is considered to be an important milestone in the Bhakti movement of Hinduism.

There were 14 songs in the film and three of these songs have been covered in the Blog. When I presented the 3rd song chhod sakhi aaj laaj kaahe jiya dharke for the Blog, I had the mp3 clip of one more song ‘Shyam mori bindiya bikhar na jaaye’ sung by Manna Dey and Rajkumari with me. However, to my surprise, I found that this song was not listed in http://www.myswar.com. I also came to know that this song was not listed in HFGK either. I thought that the refrain of the song may have been differently listed than the starting verse of the song. But after deciphering the lyrics, I could not find any match of refrain verse in the lyrics of the song with that of the songs listed anywhere in the website.

I was fairly sure that the song under reference was from the film ‘Geet Govind’ (1947) because of the lyrics, the singers and also the style of music composition. To confirm my assumption, I wrote to Sudhir ji with my problem. He checked with his collections of the songs and prompt came his reply that all the three 78 RPM versions of the songs he had, start with ‘Shyam mori bindiya bikhar na jaaye’ and the song is from the film ‘Geet Govind’ (1947). Then, why the song was not listed?

Sudhir ji did the exercise of ticking of songs listed in HFGK with his collections and found that while the 13 songs have been accounted for, the 14th song listed as ‘lalit lavang lata parisheelan’ was not to be found. So he surmised that probably, the song was preceded by a recitation of the verse in the sound track of the film which was not included in 78 rpm recordings. To confirm his assumption, Sudhir ji wrote to Harmandir Singh Hamraz ji of HFGK who promptly clarified that the song was preceded by a couplet whose starting line was “lalit lavang lata parisheelan”. It is now clear that, as presumed by Sudhir ji, the couplet was not included in the 78 RPM record version of the song.

With these clarifications, I present the 4th song from the film ‘Shyam mori bindiya bikhar na jaaye’ sung by Manna Dey and Rajkumari. The song was written by Pandit Indra Chandra which was set to music by Gyan Dutt. From the lyrics of the song, it would appear that the song may have been picturised on Prem Adib who is teaching the rendition of the song to Leela Desai.

It is extremely difficult to search singer-wise mp3 songs already uploaded on Dr Surjit Singh’s website as many have uploaded the songs randomly. One requires almost one full day to go through all the songs already posted to get a broad feel as to under whose posting one may get the required songs.

‘You are quiet a rat’ (I mean quite right – no offense intended)) Surjeetji himself replied to my query:
