I could not have missed the next episode in the Hindi alphabet series on Rafi Sb today. And it is by good luck that I am able to locate a song that adds one more anniversary together, and quite appropriately so.

When we talk about on screen performances, there are some actor names that immediately come to mind. Actors, in whose careers, the songs that Rafi Sb sang playback for them, played a significant role towards their screen success. Shammi Kapoor is an obvious name that represents the strength of this association. But there is one more name that does not get mentioned as often, but probably that name is the front runner. I am not able to clearly recall right now, but I do remember reading some place that the most songs that Rafi Sb has sung for an actor, are those for Johnny Walker. I think, even more than for Shammi Kapoor. All through the 1950s and 1960s, when Johnny Walker was one of the leading comedians of choice, practically every movie that he appeared in, has a song by him, with playback almost always by Rafi Sb. And the appropriate connection – two days ago, on 29th July, it was Johnny Walker’s passing away anniversary. We missed that on the 29th. And so, this song today, is dedicated to the memory of both – Rafi Sb and Johnny Walker – 29th and 31st July.

As I search for Rafi Sb songs starting with the Hindi letter ‘थ’, I am unable to locate any that has yet not been posted. And so, with regret, I skip this letter and come to the next – ‘द’. As I started working on a post for this letter, I could find many songs starting with this letter, and waiting to be posted. I had actually identified another song, and almost completed the work of creating the post, when I chanced to see this song also. And I suddenly remembered. Just a few days ago, Atul ji and I had a brief exchange, saying that this anniversary is coming up on 29th July, and that Johnny Walker is quite close to the century milestone. We thought about making this milestone by the 29th, but with conflicting priorities and travel time out for Atul ji, we could not go for it. Then 29th passed without a mention about him. And so today, when I stumbled upon this song, I felt relieved that we are able to so appropriately combine these two anniversaries.

The song is from the 1966 film ‘Dillagi’. The words are from the pen of Majrooh Sb, and the music is by Laxmikant Pyaarelel. A regular Johnny Walker genre song, it is so full of energy and verve. The performing side of Rafi Sb’s singing is so visible here, as he attempts to (and successfully so) express the on screen antics of Johnny Walker, through his voice. Note how the singer is rolling the ‘r’ sound in the word ‘yaaraan’, exactly as Johnny Walker does it on screen, as part of his expressions. The video of this song is thankfully available. It is a delightful treat to watch. And to experience yet once again – that Johnny Walker’s on screen performance is so intimately inseparable from the voice of Rafi Sb.

On screen, Johnny Walker is trying to woo his lady love, role played by Bela Bose. And a fair measure of the song’s footage in the music interlude is the dance steps by her. With all these elements combined, this here is a delightful song to hear and view. Two stalwarts together, yet once again. Enjoy.

Song – Dupatta Odhe Nikli Baharaan Dekho Yaaraan (Dillagi) (1966) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD – Laxmikant Pyaarelal

Lyrics

dupatta odhe nikli bahaaraan
dekho yaaraan
ye gulbadni
dupatta odhe nikli bahaaraan
dekho yaaraan
ye gulbadni
jab thaami ungli mehndi waali
chubh gaye dil mein khaaraan
dekho yaarrraan
ye gulbadni
dupatta odhe nikli bahaaraan
dekho yaaraan
ye gulbadni

naazuk badan pe sab hain
mere hi daaghe jigar ke gul bootey
rama daaghe jigar ke gul bootey
par jo kahaa yahi pyaar se
to kehne lagi ke chal jhoothe
wo rangi se iqraaraan the
aur hum samjhe inkaaran
dekho yaarrraan
ye gulbadni
dupatta odhe nikli bahaaraan
dekho yaaraan
ye gulbadni..hi

ayyee… yaah

o ho surma laga udhar to
yahaan pe dariya bahaa hai aansoo ka
rama dariya bahaa hai aansoo ka
jab paan kha ke zaalim chali to
hum ne yahaan lahoo thooka
jeete hain na to marte hain ab
hum dil ke beemaaraan
dekho yaarrraan
ye gulbadni
dupatta odhe nikli bahaaraan
dekho yaaraan
ye gulbadni

dekha to hai hamen pyaar se
isi ki abhi zaroorat hai
ho ho isi ki abhi zaroorat hai
ulfat karey to kya baat hai
ke thukra bhi de to kismet hai
ye sartaaj e mehboobaan
haaye ye jaan e dildaaraan
dekho yaarrraan
ye gulbadni
dupatta odhe nikli bahaaraan
dekho yaaraan
ye gulbadni
jab thaami ungli mehndi waali
chubh gaye dil mein khaaraan
dekho yaarrraan
ye gulbadni
dupatta
dupatta
dupatta odhe nikli bahaaraan
dekho yaaraan
ye gulbadni

Rafi sang for Shammi’s 19 movies.

What a delightful song this is! Full of life! Never heard it before.
Thanks, Sudhirji, for introducing me to this one. 🙂
