Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 4
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

This post under this series is not in chronological order as far as my ongoing reminiscences about Rajesh Khanna movies are concerned. But this post fits in this series about Rajesh Khanna. This particular movie “Chakravyooh”(1978) was critically acclaimed for the performance of Rajesh Khanna as also for ‘its offbeat story line’ which was at variance with typical Rajesh Khanna-romantic movies that we were used to.

The movie had only two songs and one of them ‘shaadi karne se pyaar kam ho jaata hai’-a lovely sweet song – has already been posted on the blog almost four years back.

I had shared the lyrics of the second and final song (the only remaining song from the movie) in the past. Subsequently, I came across an interesting review of this movie on ‘memsaab’s blog’. Several familiar names of this blog have posted their comments on this review.

Today’s song is the ‘theme song’ of the movie. ‘wiki’ mentions this song as containing as many as ‘six versions’. HFGK though mentions this song as one single song only.

I had watched this movie during my ‘childhood years’ (before the spell of ‘Rajesh Khanna magic’ could be cast on me) but I do not remember the story of this movie ‘Chakravyuh’ now and I have no memories associated with this movie.

As I mentioned above I must say that watching this movie on big screen would be more enjoyable, since this movie, so far as I think, is watchable and given its different story line and its’ direction, it is surely a good movie to watch and Rajesh Khanna has certainly performed very well in this movie (and he was even nominated for the ‘best actor category’ by the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards (BFJA) which he did not won).

This movie came when the ‘golden period’ of Rajesh Khanna was over and he was trying to make a comeback. In his second innings as an actor, he was acting in off-beat movies and playing different kinds of roles in the films released from 1976-1977 to 1980. But sadly almost all such films were miserable failures at the ‘box office’. Rajesh Khanna and his ‘fans’ (yes they were still there) had to wait till 1979 when he finally began to taste box office successes yet again- first with ‘Amar Deep’ and later with ‘Thodisi Bewafai’.

I am reproducing here the ‘quote’ that ‘Wikipedia’ about this movie;

Before the release of the film, director Basu Chatterjee said to Screen India “If the artiste lives up to that image, I’m satisfied. In Chakravyuh, Kaka has interpreted his role beautifully. I will say this much. If the film flops, I am responsible for it. Khanna has performed very well. He gives me what performance I want very easily within an hour whereas other actors generally would take around 8 hours to give the same kind of performance as I want. Khanna got more done in one hour than everybody else did in eight.”

When I read this I was immediately reminded of and interview of Ramesh Deo and Seema Deo conducted after Rajesh Khanna’s death. I remember Ramesh Deo mentioning about late coming of Rajesh Khanna. Once he asked Hrishikesh Mukherjee why he did not say anything to Kaka on this and Hrishi Da replied that though Kaka might be coming late on the sets, but the shot given by him in the first take of shooting was so perfect that it would make him forgive all his late-comings.

Unfortunately these clips have now been removed from YT. But I could locate an article which mentions the above incident and it can be read here.

Three movies of Rajesh Khanna were released in 1978 as given below;

SNo Movie Year Passed by Censor Board
01 Bholaa Bhaalaa 1978 25.04.1978
02 Naukri 1978 02.06.1978
02 Chakravyuha 1978 22.07.1978

“Chakravyuh-1978” was produced by Yusuf Hasan and it was directed by Basu Chatterjee for “Aasha Art International, Bombay”. Basu Chatterjee also wrote the screenplay of this movie.

Sultan Hasan and Gianchand Walia were the co-producers of this movie. It had Rajesh Khanna, Neetu Singh, Simple Kapadia, A.K.Hangal, Dina Pathak, Om Shivpuri, Pinchoo Kapoor, Ashim Kumar, Yunus Parvez, Amrit Lakhanpal, Murad, C.S.Dubey, Monto, Prem Sagar, Mohan Choti, Master Raju, Ritu Kamal, Viju Khote, Vikas Anand, Rozeena, Amarnath, Kanu Roy, Pardesi, Avtar Gill, Lalit Rai, Prabir Roy and Pradeep Kumar.

Vinod Mehra makes a special appearance in this movie.

V.N.Mayekar was the editor for this movie and the dialogues for this movie were written by Jainendra Jain.

As said earlier this movie had two songs composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal which were written by Anand Bakshi. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Mohd Rafi give their voices to the songs in this movie and the one song posted earlier was a duet song sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar.

So here is presenting this ‘theme’ song of this movie which does have ‘six versions’ and I have mentioned the ‘timings’ as they appear on the screen.

This song is sung by Rafi Saab and is quite an interesting song. It’s a nice hummable song too which one can enjoy while travelling or hum it while driving to move ahead ‘even if somebody is not giving you a chase’.

Lyrics in Devnagri Script (for main song only)
