Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 35

Of the many colors of Rafi Sb’s voice, probably the most touching, and the most impressive is his interpretation of the emotions of sadness. Maybe, it be so that the “. . . sweetest songs are the ones that tell of the saddest thoughts” (from the poetry of Percy Shelley, that inspired the iconic song of ‘Patita’ (1953) – “Hain Sab Se Madhur Wo Geet Jinhen Hum Dard Ke Sur Mein Gaate Hain”). And maybe, that the genuineness and honesty of expressions that go together with the unfeigned and substantive voice of Rafi Sb, it simply makes us feel the true depth of this ‘sweetness’ – a sweetness that touches a very familiar, a very dear chord within.

‘Ganga Ki Lehren’ is a 1964 film about acceptability of relationships, outside of the likes and dislikes of familial boundaries. Ashok (role played by Dharmendra), in an emergent moment of genuine chivalry, offers to, and gets married to Seema (roled played by Savitri), when at a wedding ceremony where he is an invitee, the groom and his family walk away before the solemnizing rites. This unplanned and impetuous decision is disliked by Ashok’s father, who disowns him and disenfranchises him from his inheritance. Ashok, belonging to a rich family, restarts his life with modest means.

Adversity visits this new household, which is now augmented with a child, and Uma (role played by Kumkum), sister of Seema. Ashok is inflicted with an ophthalmological ailment, for which the surgical treatment is beyond his humble means.  Seema takes an initiative, and secretly visits Ashok’s father to seek help.  Help is promised indeed, but with the condition that Seema should remove herself from Ashok’s life. Seema accepts the condition, for the sake of her husband’s well being.

The song presented today, comes in the film at this very juncture, as Seema picks up a resolve, and leaves her home and family one night, and attempts to commit suicide. The attempt fails, and she is rescued by Dr Balraj (role played by Rehman). The remaining part of the film tells of the twists and turns of fate that takes all the players through many ups and downs, and how all the misfortunes are mended, and the family is reunited, this time with the blessings of the elders.

The eight songs in this film are all from the pen of Majrooh Sb. Music is composed by Chitragupt. Four songs of this film are already represented here in these pages, Here is the fifth song of this film.

This is a background song, plays on screen when Seema takes the resolve and leaves her home. Even paced and well modulated, a wonderful ‘sad’ song, in the voice of Rafi Sb.

Song – Shamma Bujhne Ko Chali (Ganga Ki Lehren) (1964) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD – Chitragupt

Lyrics

ho oo oo oo

ho oo oo oo oo

shamma bujhne ko chali
shamma bujhne ko chali
shamma bujhne ko chali
shamma bujhne ko chali
hai yehi dard ke
jal jaaye patanga na kahin
shamma bujhne ko chali
shamma bujhne ko chali

us ne chaaha ke mera chaahne waala to rahe
us ne chaaha ke mera chaahne waala to rahe
main rahoon ya na rahoon
ghar ka ujaala to rahe

apne hi ashqon mein
bheegi hui ik raat liye
gham ke toofaan mein ghiri
thokren khaati nikli
shamma bujhne ko chali
shamma bujhne ko chali

apne begaane chute
lakht e jigar chhoot gayaa
apne begaane chute
lakht e jigar chhoot gayaa
gham ke sholon mein chhupi aisi ke ghar chhoot gaya
doobne aayi hai paani mein naseebon ki jali
shamma bujhne ko chali
shamma bujhne ko chali
