Missing Films of 1960s – 33

Unbelievable – that this song is still waiting to be posted.

This gem of a song, a forgotten favorite from the radio listening days. Such a lovely and soulful song, a wondrous melody that enhances the poignancy of the emotions contained within the words. And the words – what an ocean of feelings has been captured and bundled, just within the three phrases of the first line itself,

dil liya. . .     gham diya. . .     kya kiya. . .

Another of those wonder play of words that I would like to bracket along with “Ramaiyya Vasta Vaiyya. . .   Maine Dil Tujhko Diya” – so much is said, and so few words are used. The emotional response of the listener itself to this string of words and to the flow of the melody is an overabundance, filling the heart to the brim, and actually, no more needs to be said.

Remembering lyricist Anjum Jaipuri today (15 july 2017), on the anniversary of his passing away. Four years ago, this day, I had made an earlier attempt to gather information about this amazing poet, but in the article that I was able to put together (for the song “Raat Kitni Haseen Zindagi Meharbaan”), I was unable to present any details about the person himself, and only described a career based on the filmography extracted from the Geet Kosh. Four years later, today, there is no change in available information content, and I am unable even today to present any more information about him.

This song – heard long ago on the radio, and then lost track of. Heard occasionally in selection recordings, or sometimes played from my collection, is a beautiful memory that always touches the heart deep inside.

The film is ‘Duniya Hai Dilwaalon Ki’ from 1966. The music is from the mind of another obscure and unfamiliar genius – James Singh or simply Jimmy. The singing voice is that of Asha Bhosle, rendering this pensive aria, oh so suitably. The movie makes a debut on the blog today.

Nothing more to say, really. Just listen to the song; I am sure the thought in your mind will be ‘what more to say’. Lovely song.

Song – Dil Liya Gham Diya Kya Kiya  (Duniya Hai Dilwaalon Ki) (1966) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Anjum Jaipuri, MD – Jimmy (aka James Singh)

Lyrics

dil liya gham diya kya kiya
dil liya gham diya kya kiya
balma re na ja na ja
tu na ja. . .

o o o
gham hai kaanton bhara raasta
deti hoon pyaar ka vaasta
haaye
gham hai kaanton bhara raasta
deti hoon pyaar ka vaasta
laaj ulfat ki kuchh to nibha
balma re na ja na ja
tu na ja
hoye
dil liya gham diya kya kiya
balma re na ja na ja
tu na ja. . .

ho o o
chain dil ko kahaan aayega
pyaar ka deep bujh jaayega
tez hai aaj gham ki hawa
balma re na ja na ja
tu na ja
hoye
dil liya gham diya kya kiya
balma re na ja na ja
tu na ja. . .

ho o o
dil ke moti bikhar jaayenge
tumse bichhde to mar jaayenge
haaye
dil ke moti bikhar jaayenge
tumse bichhde to mar jaayenge
seh sakenge na hum ye sazaa
balma re na ja na ja
tu na ja
dil liya gham diya kya kiya
balma re na ja na ja
tu na ja. . .

Dear Ashok ji

I am glad that you liked this song so much. और जो ढोलक का रिदम है, और थोड़ा सा बांसुरी का सुर, थोड़ा सा सितार, the net effect is just lovely.

Thanks for your note of appreciation.

Samant ji,

Thanks for your kind words of appreciation. 🙂
