Hullo to Atuldom

We have had two posts today celebrating the birth anniversary of the one and only Mohd. Rafi. And both were excellent posts. Our Avinashji has managed to remember Mahipal’s birth anniversary too. Great job!

Today also happens to be the birthdate of an actor/ star shining in Bollywood since 1984. I won’t say he didn’t struggle to find his place in Bollywood. I won’t say that being the son of a producer made things easy for him. He began by playing one the many young characters in Umesh Mehra’s “Humare Tumhare”. He assisted director Bapu who was then directing “Hum Paanch”. I am talking of Anil Kapoor. It is hard to believe he turns 61 today. I saw a recent movie of his, this morning on one satellite channel where his physique matches his young nephew- Arjun Kapoor- who was his co-actor. I seem to have been seen a lot of movies of his post 1990 when he played a mentor obsessive of his protégé- Taal. He has played a mentally retarded man who is a very understanding and supportive husband in Eeshwar, a modern city educated son of a proud village headman who gets his priorities right when he sees his father hacked to death in Viraasat. Oh, definitely he is a master of all genres when in front of the camera including comedy. I can list out all his collaborations with David Dhawan to prove my point here. But I will pick a movie called “Deewana Mastana” and the rest of the post will explain why this particular movie.

There is one other actor who had his birthday this week. He too, like Anil Kapoor, belonged to a family connected with Bollywood. His father was an actor in the forties till mid-fifties and mother was a classical singer of the Patiala Gharana and also an actress of the forties. Our actor/ star who is their son is one of Arun Kumar Ahuja and Nirmala Devi’s six children- Govinda. His birthday was on 21st and he turned 54 only!!? Should be considering he was born in 1963. He too began his journey in Bollywood in the 80s, playing second fiddle to the likes of Raj Kumar – Marte Dum Tak, Dilip Kumar- Izzatdaar; Dharamendra – Dadagiri and a few more; Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Rajnikant , Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Jeeteedra and all the top stars of that period. He played into the hearts of the audience with his dancing abilities which he had honed after seeing Mithun in Disco Dancer. I remember I was floored by the way he danced in Pahlaj Nihalani’s “Ilzaam” to the “street dancer” song. But he found his comic capabilities on teaming up with David Dhawan and then we were drowned in a sea of ‘No:1’ movies.
Though Deewana Mastana didn’t carry the ‘No:1’ tag it was still a rib-tickler. We had Anil Kapoor as Raja ganging-up with Johnny Lever as Ghafoor against Govinda as Bunnu and trying to woo the beautiful Psychiatrist Dr. Neha (Juhi Chawla). And without resorting to buffoonery these two keep the proceedings lively. All the comedy is through the dialogues. There is one particular scene where Bunnu and Raja discus all the movies that ever-had love-triangles in them and how eventually one person has to sacrifice his love but the movie had a unique ending with both the suitors losing the girl 🙂 .

Today’s song is a party number where the whole cast joins the lead three. It is written by Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant-Pyarelal were the composers. Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Udit Narayan and Vinod Rathod are the singers. The movie was produced by Ketan Desai.

Happy Birthday to Anil Kapoor and belated wishes to Govinda.

Lyrics

Laa lara laa
ishq hazaaron karte hain
par aashiq sabka naam nahin
yeh sab ke bas ka kaam nahin

head ya tail
head ya tail
pyar mohabbat dil ka khel
head ya tail
head ya tail
pyar mohabbat dil ka khel
iss khel mein koi hai pass
iss khel mein koi hai pass
koi hai pass
to koi hai fail

hey
head ya tail

head ya tail
pyar mohabbat dil ka khel
head ya tail

head ya tail
pyar mohabbat dil ka khel
is khel me koi hai pas
is khel mein koi hai paas
koi hai paas
toh koi hai fail

head ya tail
head ya tail
pyaar mohabbat dil ka khel

do dilon ke beech mein jo aayega
aayega
muft mein bemaut maaraa jaayega
do dilon ke beech mein jo aayega
aayega
muft mein bemaut maraa jaayega
dekhta hi reh jaayega villain
arre dekhta hi reh jaayega villain
hero heroine ko le jaayega

haan aaj ho ya kal
hoga do dilon ka mel
hoga do dilon ka mel
hey head ya tail
head ya tail
arre pyaar mohabbat dil ka khel

bade bade haar gaye
iss khel mein
iss khel mein
thhode paagal khaane gaye
thhode jail mein
thhode jail mein
arre bade bade haar gaye
iss khel mein
thhode paagal khaane gaye
thhode jail mein
dariya mein doob gaya thha mahiwaal
dariya mein doob gaya thha mahiwaal
raanjhe ka ho gaya thha majnu sa haal
romeo ka ho gaya thha heart fail

ho gaya thha heart fail
hey head ya tail
head ya tail
pyaar mohabbat dil ka khel
is khel mein koi hai pass
is khel mein koi hai pass
koi hai pass
toh koi hai fail
head ya tail

head ya tail
pyaar mohabbat dil ka khel
bolo head ya tail
head
tail

When I saw the title “Head ya tail” it didn’t register but when I listened to the song, I immediately realised that I’d heard this song before. I think it was a fairly popular song. Have seen the movie too – good fun.

Thanks for this post, Peevisie’s Mom. Good of you to write this post for Anil Kapoor and Govinda. To be honest, I didn’t even know their birthdays fall today (Anil) and this week (Govinda).
