Blog Day :

3761 Post No. : 14734 Movie Count :

“Ajaamil”(1948) was directed by Jamnadas Kapadia for Sanskar Chitra, Bombay. The movie had Umakant, Malti, Kanta Kumari, Narmadashankar, Kashinath, Bhimji Bhai, Chandrika, Shanta bai, Suresh, Manhar Desai etc in it.

This obscure movie had twelve songs according to HFGK. A few of these songs have become available on YT. Though HFGK is silent about the singers of all these songs, One can make out which song contain which voices.

Here is the first song from “Ajaamil”(1948) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Rajkumari. Lyrics are penned by Kavi Prabhulal Dwiwedi according to HFGK. Music is composed by Master Mohan junior.

It is interesting to note that the uploader of this song, well known record collector Mr Girdharilal Vishhwakarma mention the lyricist as S P Tripathi, an entirely different name from what is mentioned in HFGK. I have gone with the name provided by uploader.

Music is composed by Master Mohan Junior.

With this song, “Ajaamil”(1948) makes its debut in the blog. As many as 149 HIndi movies were released in 1948. With this song, “Ajaamil”(1948) becomes the 100th movie of 1948 to find representation in the blog. So this is yet another example of an “artificial” though significant landmark for the blog. 🙂

Blog Day : 3543 Post No. : 14221

Today (31 march 2018) is the last day of the financial year 2017-18 that is followed in India. One would like to close the accounts of the financial year meeting all the targets and start the new financial year with a clean slate.

Today also happens to be the 46th remembrance day of Meena Kumari (1 August 1933– 31 March 1972). I was a school kid when she died and we school kids discussed this matter among ourselves. Our verdict was that her demise would help the box office prospects of “Paakeeza”which was scheduled to be released soon.

She died at quite a young age. She was not even 39 at that time. With the benefit of hindsight, one feels that she was in urgent need to psychological counselling just like Dilip Kumar, who was the male counterpart of Meena Kumari in playing tragedy roles but who successfully managed to come out of the after-effects of playing tragic roles in his career.

Ironicallty, Meena Kumari had begun her career playing cheerful happy roles, against Kishore Kumar, no less.

A vast majority of movies featuring Meena Kumari are already YIPPEED in the blog so there is no scope of discussing a song picturised on Meena Kumari on this occasion. Fortunately, I could still come across some un YIPPEED movies with Meena Kumari in them. “Daana Pani”(1953) is one such movie. This movie, which was directed by V M Vyas for Sunrise Pictures, Bombay had Meena Kumari, Shashi Kapoor senior, Weera, Chhagan, Romeo, Radha Krishnan, Chitra, Wasti etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fourth song from “Daana Pani”(1953) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Rafi and Shamshad Begam. Kaif Irfani is the lyricist. Music is composed by Mohan Junior.

Only the audio of the song is available. Uploaders of the audio link (s) of this song have carried the picture of Shashi Kapoor in the link, but the Shashi Kapoor in this movie was a different person and senior in age compared to Raj Kapoor’s kid brother (who was only 15 years of age when this movie was released). The song was most likely picturised on Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari. I request our knowledgeable reades to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

Blog Day : 3487 Post No. : 14006

The Indian general budget was presented day before yesterday on 1 february 2018. As happens on occasions like this, we had lots of discussions on this on social media. Here is one budget related observation that got forwarded on whatsapp:

Budget summary in three lines
-Lower class gets subsidy !
-Upper class gets Rebate !!
-Middle class only gets TV debates
🙂 🙂

It turns out that similar observations were made in a Hindi movie song as far back as in 1953. 🙂 The movie was “Daana Paani” (1953) which was directed by V M Vyas for Sunrise Pictures Production. The movie had Wasti, Meena Kumari, Shashi Kapoor Sr, Weera, Chhagan, Romeo, Radha Krishnan, Chitra etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it. Two songs from the movie have been covered in the past.

This song is sung by Rafi. Kaif Irfani is the lyricist. Music is composed by Mohan Junior.

This Mohan Junior was not Madan Mohan (as is erroneously mentioned at some places), but a Gujarati gentleman. He was called Mohan junior because there was another Mohan, viz Mohan Sharma, operating in those days. These details have been dug out by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia when we discussed another song from this movie during 2011.

Only the audio of this light hearted song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Koi ameer hai koi ghareeb hai (Daana Paani)(1953) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Kaif Irfani, MD-Mohan Junior

Lyrics

koi ameer hai
koi ghareeb hai
jo hai donon ke beech
bada badnaseeb hai
jo hai donon ke beech
bada badnaseeb hai

koi kehta raam tujhe
koi rahmaan
koi kehta raam tujhe
koi rahmaan
tujhe hai sabki chinta aa aa
o bhagwaan
tujhe hai sabki chinta aa aa
o bhagwaan
koi bhookha marey
to koi mauj karey ae
koi bhookha marey ae
to koi mauj karey ae ae
likha toone ye kaisa naseeb hai
jo hai donon ke beech
bada basnaseeb hai

thhodi tankhwa
sar pe kunbe ka bhaar
thhodi tankhwa
sar pe kunbe ka bhaar
phate kapde jo dekhen
hanse rishtedaar
phate kapde jo dekhen
hanse rishtedaar
idhar apna ye haal
udhar bachchon ka pyaar
idhar apna ye haal
udhar bachchon ka pyaar
aisi zindagi to maut ke kareeb hai
jo hai donon ke beech bada badnaseeb hai
koi ameer hai
