There are some actors who have normally been identified with what is known as ‘middle of the road’ films. The big names among them are Amol Palekar, Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Farooque Shaikh, Om Puri, Irfaan Khan, Deepti Naval, Paresh Rawal and Pankaj Kapoor. In the recent times, some more actors have joined this list which includes Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Raghubir Yadav, Pankaj Tripathi etc. One more name of the actor which I would like to include in this list is Sanjay Mishra who has come into prominence after 2013. I am a great admirer of Sanjay Mishra as an actor. I find him to be an ‘offbeat’ actor because his expressions, reactions, body movements and dialogue deliveries are unpredictable. As an actor, Sanjay Mishra gives a feel of a real character of one among us.

Today’s song is from the historic film Prithvi Vallabh-1943.

This is a real Historic story on which there was also a Silent movie “Prithvi Vallabh aka The Lord of Love and Power”, made by Ashoka Pictures, Baroda (Gujarat) in 1925. Its story was the same as today’s film. The film was important because India’s first woman Director and Producer Fatima Begum had acted in it, along with 2 of her 3 daughters-Zubeida and Sultana. Zubeida went on to become the Heroine of India’s first Talkie film Aalam Ara-1931. After 18 years of the silent movie, Sohrab Modi’s Minerva Movietone made this film again in 1943.

Today’s song is from the film Garib-1942.

This film was made by the National studios, which was formed after Sagar movietone was closed down. Because of this the artiste who were contracted with Sagar were now bound with National Studios. Music Director Anil Biswas, actor Surendra, Sankatha prasad, Ramchandra Thakur and few others who worked for this film were ‘carried forward’ from Sagar Movietone. Most of them freed themselves to work for other studios or became Free lancers. But Music Director Anil Biswas, while in contract withNational studios, gave music to a film ” Basant ”, made by Bombay Talkies and the name of his brother in law, Pannalal Ghosh was used as the MD of that film. After the closure of national studios, Anil Biswas openly joined Bombay Talkies leaving all his loyal friends of Sagar Movietone, jobless. This became the cause of a rift between once close friends Mehboob Khan and him as Khan never pardoned Anil Biswas for this selfish act. (ref…book “Mehboob Khan” by Shashikant Kinikar).

Today’s song is from the film Parichay-1954.

When I sat to write this post, suddenly I realised that in the last 20 posts, I have written 16 posts ( a cool 80 %) on songs from films of the 50’s. Normally I try to have a mix of songs from different decades – my favourites being the 30’s and the 40’s – so that the readers have some variety, while reading the posts. This time somehow, the songs from the 50’s seem to have overtaken all other songs !

There are a good number of feature films made on Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy. I have watched a couple of Gandhi films – Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ (1982) and ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ (2006). There is film titled ‘Road to Sangam’ (2010) which I had not heard of until recently. The title of the film gave me an impression of a film on a road journey to the confluences of the holy rivers in India (for example, Panch Prayags in Uttarakhand). But it turned out to be a Hindi film connected with Mahatma Gandhi.
