Today’s song is from the film Ladies Only-1939.

The year was 1939 and the British Government had declared war against Germany and Japan, as soon as the WW II began. All countries ruled by Britain were – willingly or unwillingly, drawn into the war efforts and its effects. The war began in the month of September and soon various restrictions came into operation – like rationing, blackouts, shortages etc. The film industry which was still under its development stage suffered. It also realised the importance of remaining united as one industry. However, all that came after 1 or 2 years. In 1939 there was not much effect seen on the film industry.

Greetings on the occasion of Maha Shivratri which is being celebrated today (26 February 2025).

In Kolhapur district of Maharashtra, there is a small village called Khidrapur located close to Karnataka border. The village has an ancient Shiva temple known as Kopeshwar temple at the shore of River Krishna. I had visited Kopeshwar temple in October 2014 which is about 40 kms south of Sangli. There were no other visitors as this temple is not well-known. The temple priest told me that during Maha Shivratri and Navaratri, devotees from adjoining villages and the neighbouring districts visit the temple in large numbers.

Today’s song is from the film Divorce-1938.

Change is everywhere. Individual persons, family, society, a nation and the entire world faces changes. The change does not come suddenly. It does give some indications. Those who decipher and understand its signals, they are prepared and do not get shocked. Those who do not understand, they suffer and are not prepared for the effects of change. Just because you are good at something, sometimes, which people appreciated, does not mean that if you do not adapt to the changes in peoples’ tastes, they will continue appreciation forever. Remember, when choices are available, the world tends to adopt changes.

Today’s song is from a very old-as many as 87 years- film Brahmachari-1938.

When Talkie films started, all the filmmakers looked for ways to make their films cater to a wider area and bring a lot of profits. One sure way was to tap the All India market, which would fulfil their desires. Initially the film productions were in very limited cities – Bombay, Kolhapur, Lahore, Calcutta and Madras. For going to All India, the filmmakers in Bombay, Lahore and Kolhapur had no problems, but for Calcutta and Madras, language was an obstacle. Who would see Bengali and Tamil/Telugu films in North and East India ?

Hullo Atuldom

A long time ago, sometime in my childhood, there used to be an ad that used to start with “a small & happy family”. The family is shown to be sitting and enjoying quality, family time when suddenly there is a problem in the form of a flickering TUBE-LIGHT. Basically it was an ad for some brand of TUBE-LIGHTS that we used to see in cinema halls. From that ad, I learnt that small things effect smooth functioning of families.
