Manoj Kumar (24.07.1937 – 04.04.2025) is synonymous with Bharat Kumar, yes! but he was much more. He was involved in multiple branches of film making – acting, production, direction, editing, writing (story, dialogues, lyrics). He has given many memorable films in various capacities. And very rightly he was honored with awards, and accolades time to time in his life journey. He was conferred with the highest award for films i.e. the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’ in in ‘2015’. Earlier he had won the National Award for his movie Úpkaar’ in 1967, which was awarded as the second-best feature film of that year. He won the Filmfare awards in different categories viz as Best Actor for the film ‘Be-imaan-1972’, Best Director Award for the movies “Upkaar-1967″’and ‘Roti Kapadaa Aur Makaan-1974’, Producer award (with others) for “Upkaar-1967” and the award for Best Story and Dialogues for “Upkaar-1967”. He won the award for Best Editing for the movie ‘Shor’ and finally the Filmfare ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for films in ‘1999’. No other film personality has won four awards for a single movie. What is more interesting is that he was also nominated for the ‘Best Actor’ award for the same movie i.e. “Upkaar-1967”.

After the success of “Upkaar-1967” Manoj Kumar Produced, wrote and directed the movie ‘Purab Aur Paschhim-1970’. It had Ashok Kumar, Saira Banu, Manoj Kumar, with Pran, Bharati, Nirupa Roy, Barbara Lindley, Shammi, Leela Mishra, and Kamini Kaushal, Prem Chopra, Madan Puri, Manmohan, Asit Sen and Rajendra Nath, Vinod Khanna, Krishan Dhawan, Kuljeet, Ram Mohan, Sobti, Joginder, O. P. Kohli, and Om Prakash as ‘Honoured Guest’. Story of ‘Purab Aur Paschhim’ was written by Manoj Kumar and his wife Smt Shashi Goswami. Editing of this movie was done by B.S. Glaad and V.N. Reddy was the cameraman for this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. The Playback singers for this movie are Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor, Asha Bhonsle, Mukesh, Manhar, Brij Bhushan, Shyama Chittar and Usha Iyer (Usha Utthup). The lyricists for this movie are Indeevar, Prem Dhawan, and Santosh Anand who make a debut as ‘lyricist’ with this movie.

‘Purab Aur Paschhim-1970’ has ten soundtracks including nine songs. Six songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog earlier. I am presenting the seventh song (or a snippet) from this movie on the auspicious occasion of ‘Ram Navami’ today. On screen we have Manoj Kumar lip-syncing in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor and Rajendra Nath lip-syncing in the voice of singer Manhar. Also seen in the picturization of this song are Saira Banu, Madan Puri, and many others. This song sequence is shot at a beautiful London Park.

Let Bhagwan Ram bless us all on this ‘paawan diwas’ today. And let us also pay our tributes to Manoj Kumar aka Bharat Kumar.

Purab aur Paschim had this message via songs in abundance apart from the patriotic feeling that was revealed in other films such as UPKAR also.

Thank you doctor for this song from one of the best movies made by Manoj Kumar.

He was an actor who had won many accolades and enacted varied characters onscreen, but his films with patriotic fervour & the “Bharat Kumar” image overshadowed everything else.

We should not forget his “Hariyali aur raasta”, “Woh Kaun Thi”, “Aadmi”, “Dus Numbri”, “Do Badan” etc. all of which were traditional entertainers.

May he Rest In Peace
