Today 6th February 2026 is the 111th birth anniversary of Poet-Lyricist Kavi Pradeep. He was born on 06th February 1915 and he passed away on 11th December 1998.

On this occasion today we will be presenting a few songs written by him here on this blog.

In this post I am presenting a song from the 1941 movie ‘Jhoola’. It was directed by Gyan Mukherjee for the famous ‘Bombay Talkies Ltd, Bombay’. It has Leela Chitnis, Ashok Kumar, Shah Nawaz, V. H. Desai, Mumtaz Ali, Karuna Devi, Shahzadi, Rajkumari Shukla, Meenu Kapoor, M.A. Aziz, Kazi, Master Lakshman, Leeladhar Sharma, Iqbal Bai, B.M. Dixit, Jyoti, Dulari, Nana Palsikar and others. This movie has eleven songs which were all written by Kavi Pradeep. Music for this movie was composed by Saraswati Devi. The playback singers for this movie were Leela Chitnis, Ashok Kumar, Rahmat Bano, Kavi Pradeep and Arun Kumar.

Geet Kosh Vol-I mentions that for six songs the tunes were suggested b Kavi Pradeep himself and for one song the tune was suggested by Pannalal Ghosh. Today’s song is one such song from this movie where the tune of the song was suggested by Kavi Pradeep.

Today I am presenting the tenth song from this movie which is in the voice of Rahmat Bano and Arun Kumar. Lyrics are by Kavi Pradeep and music is composed by Saraswati Devi. Today’s song is a ‘celebration song’ and it is celebrating the ‘engagement ceremony or ring ceremony’ i.e. ‘sagaaee’. In the picturisation of this song we have many artistes in the gathering to grace the occasion. I am unable to identify almost all of them except I guess actor Shah Nawaz is present there. Leela Chitnis is shown in the background of the song. As the song ends, actress Karuna Devi making her entry and frowning at the goings on.

Let us listen to and enjoy this song now…

Song-Dekho hamre raaja kee aaj sagaai hai (Jhoola)(1941) Singers-Rahmat Bano, Arun Kumar Mukherjee, Lyricist-Kavi Pradeep, MD-Saraswati Devi

Lyrics

dekho hamre raajaa kee
aaj sagaaee hai
dekho hamre raajaa kee
aaj sagaaee hai
bolo badhaaee hai
badhaaee hai
badhaaee hai
bolo badhaaee hai
badhaaee hai
badhaaee hai
dekho hamre raajaa kee
aaj sagaaee hai

oonchee atariyaa pe
naubat baaje ae
oonchee atariyaa pe
naubat baaje
aangan mein
shehnaayee hai
dekho hamre raajaa
haan haan hamre raajaa kee
aaj sagaaee hai

pyaare pyaaree raaja hain
pyaaree pyaaree raanee
pyaare pyaaree raaja hain
pyaaree pyaaree raanee
jaise gangaa mein
jamunaa kaa paanee
jaise gangaa mein
jamunaa kaa paanee
bhai khoob ye jodee milaayee hai
dekho hamre raajaa
haan haan hamre raajaa kee
aaj sagaaee hai

haan aan aan
samdhee hamaare
samdhee hamaare
bade bholey bhaaley
bade bholey bhaaley
bade bholey bhaaley
duniyaa ke logon se
bilkul niraale
lekin joru se inkee
bhaai joru se inkee
ladaaee hai
ladaaee hai
ladaaee hai
dekho hamre raajaa
haan haan hamre raajaa kee
aaj sagaaee hai

baithhe huye hain
yahaan kuchh kunwaare
haan aan
baithhe huye hain
yahaan kuchh kunwaare
ronee si soorat
banaa ke bichaare
sab ke man mein
in sab ke man mein
kyaa hai
lugaayee hai
lugaayee hai
lugaayee hai
dekho hamre raajaa
haan haan hamre rajaa kee
aaj sagaaee hai

raajaa jee hamko
bhool na jaiyyo
raajaa jee hamko
bhool na jaiyyo
bitwaa jo howe to
lallaa jo howe to
munnaa jo howe to
hamko bulaiyyo
hamko bulaiyyo
badee badee aashaa
lagaayee hai
dekho hamre raajaa
haan haan hamre rajaa kee
aaj sagaaee hai

Good Evening Sir ji,

Such a beautiful song, of the past.

And nice to get information about past singers, poets and music directors.

Thanks for sharing this jewel.

Blessings

Uma🙏
