‘Sitamgar’ (1985) was produced by Bikram Singh Dehal and was directed by Raj N Sippy. The cast included Dharmendra, Parveen Babi, Rishi Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon, Shreeram Lagoo, Prem Chopra, Jagdish Raj, Ranvir Raj, Master Alankar, Baby Geeta, Azaad etc. Sonia Sahni, Sudhir and Narendranath made their special appearances in the film. Producer Bikram Singh Dehal is the brother-in-law of Dharmendra having married to his elder sister. He has produced six films including the film under discussion and in all his films, Dharmendra or Sunny Deol had main roles.

The shooting of the film started sometime in 1978. However, film got delayed in its completion majorly on the health issues with Parveen Babi. Thereafter, the film was put on back burner as Dharmendra got busy with his home production and Sunny Deol’s debut film, ‘Betaab’ (1983). It is only after the release of ‘Betaab’ (1983) that ‘Sitamgar’ (1985) was revived and completed using a voice artist to dub the voice of Parveen Babi who has left for the USA in 1983 after leaving her filmy career. The film was released on June 21, 1985. As mostly happens with delayed films, ‘Sitamgar’ (1985) did not fare well on the box office despite having excellent songs as befitting the story of the film.

The story of the film is as under:

The film starts with a police team taking a hand-cuffed prisoner in a guard’s coach of a goods train when Shankar (Dharmendra) who is already on the roof of the goods train throws a device which creates a dense smoke in the guard’s coach and he escapes with the prisoner. Shankar takes him to his house and provides him with drinks and food. The prisoner is surprised as to why an unknown person has helped him to get him freed from the police custody with so much of his hospitality. Shankar reveals that it is his business to first set the criminals free from the police custody and then hand over back to the police for which he gets rewards. With this revelation, Shankar hands him over to the police and earn a reward of Rs.25000/-. In his leisure time, Shankar is friendly with Sheela (Parveen Babi), a cabaret dancer.

In a flashback, Shankar as a teenager, Sonu (Master Alankar) was working as a maid servant in the house of Nath who was staying with his wife (Sonia Sahni) and a stepdaughter, Nisha (Baby Geeta) who has lost her real father. One day, while ironing a birthday dress, Sonu inadvertently burns it, inviting the wrath of Nath who presses the heated iron on his back. Thereafter, Nath hands over Sonu to the police on some wrong charges. After his release, as a adult, he adopts Shankar as his name and does his current job of reward collector by first releasing the criminals from the police custody and then handing them back to the police for rewards. But in the back of his mind is to avenge the humiliation he received from Nath.

Jai Kumar (Rishi Kapoor) runs a dance school in which now a grown-up Nisha (Poonam Dhillon) is a student. The are in love with each other. Nath and Jeevan (Prem Chopra) are working out the strategy as to how to get rid of Kundan (Narendranath), the nephew of Jeevan who is asking back his money from Nath he has loaned him against the mortgage of his stud farms. Jeevan is fed up with Kundan for treating him badly and is eyeing his property. Kundan is eyeing on Jai Kumar’s dance school where he wants to build a 5-star hotel in Bangalore (Bengaluru). So, it is a good motive for eliminating Kundan. But who is more motivated to kill Kundan – Nath, Jeevan or Jai Kumar?. Kundan has put Sheela to spy on Jeevan when he visits Bengaluru. She records their conversations on cassette recorder in which he boasts of getting rid of Kundan. Sheela has kept the tape in her locker in a bank.

A dance performance of Jai Kumar and Nisha is in progress in a hall which Nath, Jeevan and Kundan attend. During the dance performance someone bursts the crackers creating confusion in the theatre. The light goes off and soon the police finds Kundan lying dead. Police arrests Jai Kumar on charge of killing Kundan on the basis of eye witnesses and is put in the prison. Shankar, who is already in the prison, sees in Jai Kumar a potential bounty. He arranges Jai Kumar’s escape from the prison and after his release, Shankar goes to find Jai Kumar.

During his search for Jai Kumar, Shankar finds out that Jai Kumar and Nisha are in love with each other. Jai Kumar sees Shankar riding on the horse and he escapes by telling Nisha that he is after him to hand over to the police. Nisha employes goons to assault Shankar so that he gives up hunting for Jai Kumar. But instead, Shankar effectively deals with goons and drops Nisha at her house where he comes to know that Nisha is the stepdaughter of his former employer, Nath. Now Shankar sees an opportunity to avenge his humiliation by Nath. He blackmails Nisha to marry him. Otherwise, he would arrange to hand over Jai Kumar to the police and his conviction is likely to result in death sentence. In order to save Jai Kumar from gallows, Nisha sacrifices her love and agrees to marry Shankar provided he proves Jai Kumar is onnocent for the murder.

In the meanwhile, Nath puts pressure on Police to search for Jai Kumar. He also provides hundred of villagers to search Jai Kumar in the dense forest. Jai Kumar gets cornered by villagers. At that time, Shankar comes and rescues him saying to villagers that he would take Jai Kumar in his jeep to the police station. After some distance of driving, Shankar tells him to escape in accordance with a deal between him and Nisha.

After escaping from the crowd, Jai Kumar meets Nisha from whom he gets to know the details of the deal. He says that he would now devote his full time to get hold of murderer of Kundan. He keeps a track of Jeevan’s movements and finds that he is visiting Sheela’s house. He hears their conversations which gives him the indication that Sheela has got a tape of their conversations planning to kill Kundan for his property. Jai Kumar conveys his findings to Nisha and asks her to meet him at their usual place on her birthday. Shankar hears Jai Kumar’s conversations with Nisha and meets Nisha on her birthday. He presents her with a red dress which he knew was her favourite colour during her childhood. She declines the birthday present by saying that red is no longer her favourite colour. Shankar insists on knowing the reason. Nisha takes Shankar to her room and shows all the things which she and Sonu used, including her red-coloured frock which got burned while Sone was ironing. Shankar gets an emotional shock as he never new that Nisha was so much attached to him. Shankar now decides to help Nisha in the pursuit to prove Jai Kumar innocent in which Sheela helps him in getting the original tape conversations. Now Nath and Shankar are desperately trying to get the tape conversations which Sheela has decided to give it to Shankar so that the innocence of Jai Kumar is proved. In a car chase to get hold of Sheela and Shankar for the tape, Nath dies when his car plunges into the river from the bridge. Jai Kumar and Nisha as also Shankar and Sheela unite.

The film had six songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which were set to music by R D Burman. Four songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 5th song, ‘chand roz aur meree jaan chand roz’ rendered by Kishore Kumar who lip syncs for Rishi Kapoor. Poonam Dhillon is with Rishi Kapoor who gives solace to her through the song. One can also see Dharmendra riding on the horse to keep a track on Poonam Dhillon. The audio clip has one additional Antara.

The context of the song is that Jai Kumar (Rishi Kapoor) and Nisha (Poonam Dhillon) meets in a secluded place in a clandestine manner because Jai Kumar is wrongly accused of murdering Kundan (Narendranath) and is on the run. Secondly, Shankar is after Jai Kumar to capture him and hand over to the police for a reward. Nath (Shreeram Lagoo) has accommodated Shankar for few days for bringing Nisha safely back from dense forest. Jai and Nisha are in love with each other and Shankar has been keeping an eye on Nisha’s movements. Under the circumstances, Nisha does not want to leave Jai Kumar alone and she wants to accompany him. It is at this point Jai Kumar gives her some solace through the song.

Interestingly, Majrooh Sultanpuri has adapted the first line of the song from the first line of a popular nazm, ‘chand roz aur meree jaan faqat chand hee roz’ written by Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Majrooh Sultanpuri has nicely woven the refrain ‘chand roz’ in the song emphasising that the sorrow and separation are just for few days.
