Hullo Atuldom

Got to know that today is International Family Day. ‘Family’ is something that one doesn’t choose, a person is usually born into a family. The starting point of any family are the husband and wife who get to choose each other (atleast in modern times, not in the times of my parents or even till the turn of the century). In my opinion, the anniversary of our parents should be what we celebrate as ‘Family day’ or ‘Foundation Day’ (as I like to call it 😀) But that is my thought I don’t expect people to agree with me.

Google tells that “International Day of Families” is observed globally on May 15. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, the day aims to promote awareness about the social, economic, and demographic issues that affect families worldwide. The key theme for 2026 include ‘Families, Inequalities, and Child Wellbeing’ and ‘Family- Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development’ emphasizing resilience and support.

Most of the films made by the Indian film industry are family oriented where there are emotional pulls in all possible relationships with special love for parents, brothers, sisters and occasionally bhabhis, bhaiyyas, maasis, chachas, chachis, Didis, Jijajis etc. (I don’t want to use the English terms for these relations) sneaking into the stories.

With this post I am introducing a song where a wife is asking her husband (the starting point of any family) “what is so special about her that he loves her?”. The query is by Madhuri Dixit and so, we know that the answer by her husband (Ayub Khan) cannot be a lie. Who can doubt the truth in the answer. In the song she is dressed in a traditional simple saree an not super decked up like she was as Chandramukhi in ‘Devdas’, or in that purple-blue saree in ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’. But then Madhuri Dixit looks brilliant in whatever outfit she is made to wear. She was given leotards in the most unmatched (IMO) colour combination of Yellow with dark blue for a song in ‘Dil’ (1990) and she carried it off so well that it became a style-statement.

Madhuri Dixit is also an known for her expressive eyes that dance with the same rhythm as her feet and the smile that she flashes is enough to ‘light up a dark room’. Her fans compare her smile to the brilliant Madhubala’s smile (I don’t know how many agree with this). She is been entertaining us since 1984 when she was seen in Rajshri Film’s ‘Abodh’. Her next films were as the second lead with ‘Hifazat’ (1987) being one of the first with Anil Kapoor as her hero. She had taken a hiatus post her marriage in the early 2000s, and made a comeback in 2007 with ‘Aaja Nachle’ and has been in public eye with her appearance in films & as judge in television reality shows as well as films on OTT channels.

The song that I spoke of above is from the 1997 released, Prakash Jha produced & directed “Mrityudand”. The film was a commentary on social & gender injustice with the family of the protagonist being placed in Bihar. Javed Akhtar was the lyricist & Anand Milind were the music directors. Background music was by Raghunath Seth. Shabana Azmi & Madhuri Dixit led a cast that also had Om Puri, Shilpa Shirodkar, Ayub Khan, Mohan Agashe, Mohan Joshi, Harish Patel, Abha Dhulia, Achyut Potdar, Ajit Vachani etc. playing important characters.

I am sure that the readers would have guessed why I wrote so much about Madhuri Dixit. 15th May is her birthday- Wishing her all the best in her life.
