#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
(Birthday – Music Composer-Rajesh Roshan)
Today 24th May is the birthday of music director-lyricist Rajesh Roshan (born on 24.05.1955, some sources mentione the year as 1953). He is one of my favorite all time composer.
I had written about him in couple of my earlier posts on the blog. What I wrote about him in the past is worth repeating it on this occasion. During my school days, our cricket playing group used to meet every evening at the Colony recreation club. after going throught the news papers/magazines kept there, we would start discussing various topics. Hindi films and Songs were naturally a topic of common interest. Our favourite films and songs frequently got discussed there.
Our discussions were not as detailed and indepth as our discussions in the blog, of course. Our discussions were rather subjective and emotional, such as, which songs are popular and how would we rank them vis a vis other popular songs.
But some songs like ‘koyee roko na deewaane ko, man machal rahaa….’ were favorites of all.
I vaguely recollect that the songs of the film ‘Priyatama-1977’ were well appreciated. These songs were like a breath of fresh air of music.
‘Priyatama-1977’ songs the compositions of Rajesh Roshan. Songs from the movie ‘Julie-1975’ were also favorites of many, but that topic of this movie itself was meant to be a topic of discussion among seniors, juniors like me were not supposed to talk about this movie. So my memories of this film is confined to its songs. I developed a liking for these songs when I gerw up.
Before ‘Priyatama-1977’ there were songs from the film ‘Kunwaara Baap’ which were hugely popular. ‘main hoon ghoda….’ is one of my favorite of those years.
Songs of ‘Udhar Ka Sindoor’, ‘Doosra Aadmi’, ‘Yehi hai Zindagi’, ‘Khatta-Meethha’, ‘Des Pardes’, ‘Swarg Narak’, ‘Kala Patthhar’, ‘Man Pasand’, ‘Swayamwar’, ‘Do Aur Do Paanch’, ‘Aap Ke Deewaane’, and ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ were liked by all of us be they teenagers like me, or our colege going seniors in their twenties.
Rajesh Roshan was the music composer of all these song. These songs bore his unmistakable signature tunes. More good music came from his baton in the next decade of 1980s in movies eg ‘Yaarana’, ‘Kaamchor’, ‘Shrimaan Shrimati’, and ‘Khuddaar. I had watched all these movies. ‘Man Pasand’ and ‘Lootmaar’ were two movies with music by Rajesh Roshan that I could not watch.
Rajesh Roshan had given us many memorable songs and the discussion about the films of 1970s cannot be complete without mentioning his compositions
Viz. ‘koi roko na deewaane ko…(Priyatama), chal kahin door nikal jaayen … (Doosra Aadmi), ik raasta hai zindagi…(Kala Patthar).., tere dil mein jo hota hai … (Aap Ke Deewaane).., chhodo ye nigaahon ka ishaaraa … (Inkaar), mujhe choo rahi hai..(Swayamwar).., nahin nahin koi tumsa haseen (Swarg Narak) and dilruba aa meri baahon mein aa (from Yehi Hai Zindagi), main hoon ghoda ye hai gaadi (Kunwaara Baap), pari re tu kahaan ki pari (Udhar Ka Sindoor) etc.
For this occasion today we have a Rajesh Roshan signature composition song from 1970s. It is a surprise that this song from such a well loved movie to those days is not yet covered. This song is from the movie ‘Khattaa Meetha-1977’
‘Khattaa Meetha-1977’ was directed by Basu Chatterjee for ‘Intra Films, Bombay’. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 30-12-1977. The cast of this movie has Ashok Kumar, Rakesh Roshan, Bindiya Goswami, Master Raju(Shreshtha), Devendar Khandelwal, Ravi Raaj, Preeti Ganguly, Deven Verma, Vimal Sahu, debutant Pearl Padamsee and Ranjeet Chowdhary, Guest appearance by Pradeep Kumar and Keshto Mukherjee, with David, Sulochana (senior), Iftekhar, Piloo Wadia, R.S. Chopra and others. Gulzar wrote seven songs for this movie which were composed by Rajesh Roshan. Playback singers for this movie are Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore kumar, Usha mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh and Amit kumar.
The song under discussion is a duet song sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. It is picturised on Rakesh Roshan and Bindiya Goswami. Lyrics for this song were sent by Prakashchandra long back.
Let us now enjoy this wonderful composition by Rajesh Roshan. During my childhood days I always heard and understood the line as the ‘ham un dinon ameer thhe jab tum ghareeb thhe’ 🙂 Much later I realized that I was wrong. 🙂
