“Vishwanaath-1978” was directed by Subhash Ghai for ‘Ramayan Chitra’, Bombay’.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 13.01.1978. It had Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, Premnath, Pran, Rita Bhaduri, Madan Puri, Sulochana, Iftikhar, Jagdish Raj, Randhir, Sapru, Yusuf Khan, Viju Khote, Sudhir, Madhu Chauhan, Keshav Rana, Suresh Desai, and Ashok Khanna. Parikshit Sahni, Rakesh Pande, Lalita Pawar, Mukri, Bharat Bhushan, Satyen Kappu and Ranjeet make a special appearance in this movie.

This movie was a bigger hit than “Kalicharan”(1976) and this movie remained the biggest feather in Shatrughan Sinha’s cap. I was no fan of Shatrughan Sinha but this was one of the few Shatrughan Sinha movies that I liked, when I watched this movie during its first run.
Also, here is an interesting story background of this movie given by Santosh Oza jee while presenting the song ‘jab jab jo jo honaa hai’ from this movie.
… the movie starts and before you know, you have an innocent young employee of Sudhir’s company raped by him as well as by his close friend Ranjeet. And the girl gets murdered as well! Ranjeet is on the run while Sudhir gets implicated.
The case now moves to the court and the stage is set for Vishwanath- Shatrughan Sinha- to make an entry!
Shatrughan Sinha plays the role of a public prosecutor and he is pitted against a formidable, really formidable, adversary, Premnath! He has hired a top-shot lawyer, Satyen Kappu. However, Vishwanath’s has an aura about him and crowds mill around the courtroom to follow the proceedings. Speakers are installed outside to enable folks to hear the arguments! (No webcasts in that era, let me assure the young folks reading this post; in fact neither then, nor now, are court room proceedings ‘broadcast”; that is the director, Subhash Ghai’s genius!) Ordinary folks lay side-bets on who will win, GNK (Premnath) or Vishwanath! A PNK supporter even offers “ek ka das” odds should Vishwanath win! Someone in the crowd remarks to a query from a fellow bystander ‘Ye Vishwanath kya cheez hai”. Pat comes the answer- another of the dialogue gems- “Ye dekhne ki nahin, sunaney ki cheez hai”.
Satyen Kappu demolishes the prosecution with his “superb” logic and evidence and witness selection. After each witness Vishwanath is asked to cross-question them. He refuses. The fans of Vishwanath outside the courtroom get restive. Those who have placed their bets on him are panicking big time. To decisively seal his case, the defence counsel (Kappu) shows a film to the court which highlights the charitable activities done by the accused (Sudhir). The Vishwanath fans are now convinced that he has lost it!
Then comes Shatrughan Sinha to rise up and thunder as only he can (remember the earlier comment about “dekhne ki cheez” versus “sunaane ki cheez”?). His speaks on how only the altruistic activities of the accused were filmed and not his “ayyaashi”. He also mentions how the accused’s dogs meals per day cost more than the monthly salary of the deceased woman. (taaliyaan in the cinema hall!). The judge comments “aap bahut jazbaati ho rahe hain) Then suddenly Vishwanath asks for the defence’s film to be screened again! Gasps all around! What is the Public Prosecutor up to!!
Vishwanath has solid evidence in this film! Very solid!! You see, the victim had torn off Sudhir’s collar as he was assaulting her and this collar is a piece of evidence in the trial. In the film it was shown that Sudhir would pick his teeth after a meal with a silver toothpick which he concealed in the tip of his collar! As Vishwanath freezes the “tooth-picking” scene in the film and dramatically pulls out the clinching evidence, the case, so far in favour of Sudhir, goes topsy-turvy!
I will not dwell more on the film. There is a widowed mother, a marriageable sister, a girlfriend. And then is the powerful bad man Premnath out to wreck Vishwanath. Vishwanath too changes course. But to know all that you must see the movie!
Before I end, I must tell you what I found the best “dialogue” in the movie. “Jali ko aag kehte hain, bujhi ko raakh kehte hai. Aur uss raakh se bani barood ko Vishwanath kehte hain”. Of course thundered by Shotgun in his inimitable style!
This movie ‘Vishwanath-1978’ has six songs including one multiple version song. They were penned by Vitthalbhai Patel(two songs), Anjaan (2 songs)M.G. Hashmat(one song) and Rajkavi Tulsi – one song. Music for this movie was composed by Rajesh Roshan. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
So far four songs (including the multiple version song) have been posted on the blog.
Today I am presenting the fifth song from this movie which is in the voice of Manna Dey. Picturisation of this song takes place in a jail, where Pran, prisoner, sings this song to cheer up Shatrughan Sinha, who despite his upright and honest ways has been unfairly put inside the jail. Fellow inmates of the jail too join in chorus.One can notice Birbal among the jail inmates singing in chorus. Rita Bhaduri and Sulochana are also visible for a few moments in the picturisation.
Rajkavi Tulsi, also known as Inderjeet Singh Tulsi is the lyricist of this song which is composed by Rajesh Roshan.
