‘Kal Kee Aawaaz’ (1992) was jointly produced and directed by B R Chopra and Ravi Chopra. The cast included Dharmendra, Raj Babbar, Amrita Singh, Neena Gupta, Fareeda Jalal, Pratibha Sinha, Rohit Bhatia (Debutant), Gufi Paintal, Girija Shankar, Puneet Issar, Arjun etc. This was the last film directed by B R Chopra. It appears that the film was a sequel to B R Chopra’s film, ‘Aaj Kee Aawaaz’ (1984). It is said that the film’s story was inspired from the kidnapping of the then Home Minister, Mufti Sayeed’s daughter, Rubaiya Sayeed.

The main theme of ‘Aaj Ki Aawaaz’ (1984) was the citizens facing the problem from the corrupt system due to the nexus of politicians- criminals-police. A victim of such a system decides to be a vigilante justice giver when the law enforcing agencies fails to protect him. On the other hand, the theme of the film under discussion is the growing menace of kidnapping of children and teenagers from the wealthy family by anti-social elements for ransom as a part of getting easy money. The film also discusses the issues and problems faced by the law enforcing agencies as well the police-criminal nexus. This film was not as successful as ‘Aaj Ki Aawaaz’ (1984).

The story of the film is as under:

The film opens with a meeting of high police officers presided over by the Home Minister, Sayed Nooruddin Ahmed (Raj Babbar) in which he expresses his displeasure for not yet having any clue as to the recent bank robbery and a kidnaping case. The police commissioner is helpless as he does not get cooperation from the aggrieved mother as she denies that her son has been kidnapped. The reason is that she has been threatened by the kidnapper not to speak to the police otherwise the boy will be killed. Eventually, the mother pays ransom to the kidnapper.

Police Commissioner, Hamza Sheikh retires and, in his place, Ali Haider Jafferi (Dhramendra) takes over. He is a widower and lives with his college-going daughter, Shagufta (Pratibha Sinha) and Akbari (Farida Jalal) who has taken care of Shagufta since her childhood. Shagufta is in love with her college-mate, Naseeruddin (Rohit Bhatia) who is the son of the Home Minister. Police commissioner adores Shagufta very much. He has treated her in the same way as a mother will treat her.

The new police commissioner is a tough person who believes that unless the fear is instilled in kidnappers to show them that even the top police officers are not afraid of death in saving the kidnapped person, the kidnappers will always have upper hand. He proves his point of view when the robbers of Continental Bank had taken a bank customer as hostage for their safe escape, the police commissioner offers himself as a hostage in lieu of releasing the bank’s customer. In doing so, he outsmarts the robbers by killing all of them.

When the police commissioner and the Home Minister come to know about Shagufta and Naseeruddin liking each other, they agree to get them married. Police Commissioner is depressed as after the marriage, he will have to live alone without his daughter. Shagufta meets Naseeruddin and expresses her inability to marry him as her father will miss her. The story goes in the flashback mode when Shagufta tells events in her life when she was 7-year-old after she had lost her mother.

Few months after the death of his wife, Ali Haider, on the suggestion of Akbari, had hired a teacher, Nahim Bilgrami (Amrita Singh) for his daughter, Shagufta. Over a period of time, Shagufta and Nahim got along well. Ali Haider also developed a liking for Nahim which she reciprocated in a subtle way. Akbari suggested to Ali Haider that he should consider marrying Nahim for which he was ready. However, when he came to know that Shagufta liked Nahim as a teacher but she could not be a substitute for her mother, the subtle love affair of Ali Haider and Nahim came to an end.

After hearing the back events, Naseeruddin finds a solution to Shagufta’s problem. He points out to her that Nahim, who is now principal of their college, is still unmarried which indicates that she has not forgotten her love. They decides to bring Hamza and Nahim together so that her father has company after her marriage.

In the meanwhile, a sulking Bhai Khan (Punit Issar) having lost his ace bank robbers from the hands of police commissioner, has been planning to take revenge against him. He kidnaps Bunty (Daboo Malik), son of Continental Bank’s chairman, Shrivastav (Gufi Paintal). Under the instructions from the police commissioner, armed police team raid on the place where Bunty has been kept by kidnappers. They kills all the kidnappers but, in the milieu, Bunty is found dead. Shrivastav and his wife blame Police Commissioner for his death. However, the autopsy report says that Bunty was killed 48 hours before the deadline for payment of ransom.

On the birthday of her father, Shagufta and Naseeruddin brings Nahim as their birthday present to him. Shagufta assures her father that she would welcome her as her mom. After the party gets over, Shagufta and Naseeruddin are kidnapped by Bhai Khan’s gang. They have demanded the release of their hardcore criminal, Khalid Ansari and ransom money. Under the intense pressure from his wife (Neena Gupta), Home Minister is ready to release Khalid Ansari. But police commissioner is adamant that he would not allow the release of Khalid Ansari and payment of ransom.

In the meanwhile, the police commissioner has located the hideout of Bhai Khan where Shagufta and Naseeruddin have been held captives. However, by that time, Home Minister has suspended the police commissioner. He has decided to release Khalid Ansari and pay ransom at the designated place personally. However, Ali Haider is unperturbed and decides to raid the hideout in his individual capacity. In his work, his subordinate, Inspector Singh (Feroz Khan, Arjun of Mahabharat TV Serial) helps him with a rifle, guns and some hand grenades.

While Ali Haider is on his mission to raid the hideout of Bhai Khan, Home Minister is driving his car to handover Khalid Ansari and the ransom money. After successfully eliminating the guards one by one, Ali Haider enters the hide out, bursting his assault rifle and throwing grenades. He kills most of gang members. Finally, it is a dual in which Ali Haider kills Bhai Khan and unites with Shagufta and Naseeruddin. The Home Minister who has reached the place to pay ransom is ashamed to talk to Ali Haider when he hands over Naseeruddin and Shagufta to him. Before leaving with Nahim, Ali Haider gives a piece of advice to the Home Minister. If the country survives, we all survive. If country does not survive, no one survives because in burial grounds, there will only be dead bodies.

The film had eight songs written by Sameer which were set to music by Nadeem-Shravan. The film makes a debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘kisee meharbaan ne aake meree zindagee sajaa dee’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Asha Bhosle and Kumar Sanu which is picturised on Amrita Singh and Dharmendra, respectively.

The context of the song is that after the death of his wife, Ali Haider (Dharmendra) has hired a teacher, Nahim (Amrita Singh) for his daughter who gets along well with her teacher. Ali Haider also develops a liking for Nahim which she reciprocates in a subtle way. Akbari suggests to Ali Haider that he should consider marrying Nahim for which he give his consent. On that night, Ali Haider drops Nahim to her house after which she starts singing the song under discussion, expressing her feelings. After returning home, Ali Haider also expresses similar feelings through the song.
