‘Hifaazat’ (1987) was produced by A Suryanarayana and was directed by Prayag Raj. The main cast included Ashok Kumar, Nutan, Pran, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Bindu, Shakti Kapoor, Kader Khan, Gulshan Grover, Sharat Saxena, Bharat Bhushan, Lalita Pawar, Shubha Khote, Vikas Anand, Vinod Raut, Birbal etc. This was the first film in which Madhuri Dixit was paired with Anil Kapoor. However, the film failed at the box office. They were again paired in ‘Tezaab’ (1988) which became a great success at the box office. This success led to both of them working as a lead pair in the next 12 films.
The story of the film is as under:
Thakur Satyaprakash (Pran) and Laxmi (Nutan) are happily married. He owns a marble mine. So far, they have no children as Laxmi has lost still-born child three times. His mother (Lalita Pawar) wants Satyaprakash to marry for the second time to have a successor to the Thakur family. Satyaprakash rejects his mother’s suggestion but Laxmi gives her consent for the second marriage to keep the household happy. Satyaprakash gets married to Rukmani (Bindu).
After the second marriage, Laxmi gives birth to a son, named Rajkumar. Shortly thereafter, Rukmani gives birth to a son, named Lakhan. After few days, Rukmani’s brother, Buddhiram (Kader Khan) become the father of a son and Satyaprakash’s friend, Kailashnath (Ashok Kumar) also become the father of a daughter. On the naming ceremony of Laxmi’s son, Kailashnath and Satyaprakash commit to turn their friendship into a family relationship by agreeing to marry his daughter to the son of Laxmi and Satyaprakash after they come of the marriageable age. Buddhiram arranges the kidnapping of Rajkumar to ensure that her sister’s son, Lakhan become the sole successor to the huge wealth of Satyaprakash.
The film’s story goes fast forward by 21 years. One day, Kailashnath’s daughter, Janaki (Madhuri Dixit) is strolling in a nearby forest when she sees a goon, Shambhu Dada (Sharat Saxena) killing a girl. Being eyewitness, Shambhu Dada tries to kill Janaki but Ramkumar (Anil Kapoor) comes and saves her from Dada. The police jeep comes in search of Janaki and arrests Shankar Dada and drops Janaki to her house. Ramkumar visits Kailashnath’s house to be sure that Janaki has reached home. In reality, he has fallen in love with Janaki who hates him for his crude behavior and dirty upkeep. Ramkumar’s guardian, Shankarlal Verma (Vikas Anand) works in the timber factory of Kailashnath.
Satyaprakash gets arrested for killing a contractor and is sentenced to a life imprisonment, Rukmani and Buddhiram have taken over the household. They exploit Laxmi and she is treated worse than a maid servant. Lakhan (Shakti Kapoor) has taken over the management of marble mines and treats the workers as slaves. His atrocities do not spare even a newly married worker from his mines to assault his wife and then kill her husband.
One day, Buddhiram and Rukmini visit Kailashnath’s forest house to seek Janaki’s hand for the marriage with his son, Guloo (Gulshan Grover). Ramkumar comes to know of it. On the day of the engagement ceremony, he kidnaps Janaki and asks her to marry him. She declines. Police team arrests Ramkumar on the charge of kidnapping and is put in prison, in which Shankar Dada is also a prisoner. Since Ramkumar was responsible for his arrest, he takes a revenge by assaulting him. However, another inmate, Satyaprakash saves him. Ramkumar and Satyaprakash become close to each other.
One day, Satyaprakash’s wife, Durga comes to meet Satyaprakash in the prison during which Ramkumar overhears that Satyaprakash’s wife is being very badly treated by Rukmini and her son, Lakhan. He also comes to know that she was hoping that her kidnapped son would return one day. Aa a token of gratitude to Satyaprakash for saving his life in prison, he decides to give Durga the happiness of finding a lost son by posing as her son. In this work, Kailashnath helps him to become a foolproof Rajkumar.
Ramkumar turns himself as Rajkumar, the son of Laxmi and Satyaprakash and joins the household bringing some semblance of order and respect for Laxmi. He also controls the business of mining and works for the welfare of the workers. Now Janaki is fallen in love with Rajkumar and Kailashnath has given his consent for their marriage. On the day the engagement ceremony of Rajkumar and Janaki, Satyaprakash returns home after completing his jail term and recognises Rajkumar as his fellow inmate, Ramkumar. He leaves the house telling Satyaprakash that his role as Rajkumar is over. His leaving the house once again strengthens the role of Rukmini, Buddhiram and Lakhan in grabbing the business and wealth of Satyaprakash in a dubious way.
Buddhiram and Lakhan attempts to kill Satyaprakash by trashing him and leaving his ‘dead’ body in the house of Ramkumar to put the blame of murder on him. However, instead of being dead, a seriously injured Satyaprakash is taken care by Ramkumar and Janaki during which Satyaprakash, through the fingerprints of Ramkumar which accidentally get embossed on the wall, comes to know that Ramkumar in reality, is his lost child, Rajkumar. Satyaprakash and Rajkumar with the help of the workers of his marble mines neutralises Buddhiram and Lakhan and takes control of the household and the mines. Rajkumar marries Janaki and the family of Satyaprakash unites along with Kailashnath.
The film has five songs written by Anand Bakshi which were set to music by RD Burman. The film makes a debut on the Blog with its first song, “Bataata Wadaa Bataata Wadaa“. The song is rendered by S Janaki and SP Balasubramaniam who sings for Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor, respectively. It is the song about a predominant street food of Maharashtra woven in Carnatic music and dance style.
The context of the song is that Janaki (Madhuri Dixit) while strolling in a nearby forest sees Shankar Dada (Sharat Saxena) killing a girl. Dada is after her to kill her too as she can be a witness of his killing. Ramkumar (Anil Kapoor) saves her from Dada after a long fight. On the way to dropping Janaki to her house, Ramkumar takes a break for eating bataata vadaa from Ganga Mausi’s (Shubha Khote) shop. However, Ganga Mausi, while preparing the bataata vadaa, mixes ganjaa leaves instead of coriander leaves. After eating bataata vadaa, Janaki and Ramkumar become high. The song reflects their imagination in which both think that they are singing and dancing in Carnatic style.
