When Atul started the series of “Alphabetical list of actresses who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice”, he had asked readers to suggest actresses, whose name started with the letter B and whose Asha Bhosle’s song have not been covered on this blog. When he covered the letter B he kindly took up my suggestion of Bhanupriya. Bhagyashree was the other actress. I had also suggested Bipasha Basu, but the song suggested by me was only a background song and not lip-synched by the actress. As a comment to the B-instalment of Atul’s series, I also mentioned Bharati Sharma. So the next post, God-willing, will cover the song dil lagaane ko dil from Hai Golmaal in White House (2013).
Bhagyashree’s story is unlike that of most Bollywood actresses. Long before she became a household name, she was born into royalty. She hails from the illustrious Patwardhan family of Sangli in Maharashtra and is the great-granddaughter of Chintamanrao Dhundirao Patwardhan, the last ruling Raja of the princely state of Sangli during British rule.
Interestingly, acting was never something she actively pursued. Her journey into the entertainment industry began almost by chance in 1987 when acclaimed actor and filmmaker Amol Palekar approached her for his television serial Kachchi Dhoop. The series was inspired by Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel Little Women, and Bhagyashree stepped into the role after the original actress left the project unexpectedly. It was a modest beginning, but one that would soon change her life forever.
Just two years later came Maine Pyar Kiya, the film that made her an overnight sensation. Released on 29 December 1989, the romantic drama paired her opposite a then-newcomer, Salman Khan. As the sweet and graceful Suman, Bhagyashree instantly won audiences across the country. The film wasn’t just a hit, it became a sort of a phenomenon. Made on a budget of around ₹20 million, it earned more than ₹458 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 1989 and the biggest Indian film of the entire decade.
Critics loved it, audiences adored it, and the awards followed. Maine Pyar Kiya won six Filmfare Awards, including Best Film and Best Director, while Bhagyashree herself received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. The film’s popularity spread beyond India as well, with dubbed versions released in Spanish as Te Amo and later in Telugu as Prema Paavuraalu.
For most actors, this would have been the beginning of a long and glittering career. But Bhagyashree’s story took a very different turn. As offers poured in from some of the biggest filmmakers in the country, she made a decision that surprised almost everyone. Rather than chasing stardom, she chose to focus on her marriage to businessman Himalaya Dassani. Directors like Yash Chopra and Manmohan Desai were eager to cast her, but she politely declined their offers.
Years later, Bhagyashree recalled those conversations with a smile. “I was scolded by Yashji,” she remembered. “Manmohan Desai told me, ‘Bhagyashree, just say yes and I will announce the film tomorrow. Why are you not doing it?'” Even today, she speaks about those missed opportunities without regret, saying she has always been at peace with the choices she made.
Her decision meant walking away from several films that would later become well known. She turned down roles in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Ek Ladka Ek Ladki, Yaad Rakhegi Duniya, Yeh Aag Kab Bujhegi, and Stuntman—roles that eventually went to actresses such as Ayesha Jhulka, Neelam Kothari, Rukhsar, Sheeba and Zeba Bakhtiar.
After marrying Himalaya Dassani in 1990, Bhagyashree chose to appear only in films opposite her husband. Together they starred in Qaid Mein Hai Bulbul, Tyagi, and Paayal, all released in 1992. She later appeared opposite Avinash Wadhawan in Ghar Aaya Mera Pardesi (1993), which became her final Hindi film of the decade.
Although she stepped away from mainstream Hindi cinema, she didn’t disappear from acting altogether. She explored regional cinema, appearing in Tamil, Kannada and Telugu films, and made her Telugu debut with Yuvaratna Rana in 1998. Television audiences also saw her in guest appearances on popular shows such as CID and Kabhie Kabhie.
In the 2000s, Bhagyashree gradually returned to Hindi films with roles in Maa Santoshi Maa (2003), Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (2006), and Red Alert: The War Within (2010). She made her television comeback in 2014 with Laut Aao Trisha, marking her return to the small screen after many years.
More recently, she has continued to work across different film industries. She appeared in the Kannada film Seetharama Kalyana (2019) before featuring in the bilingual releases Thalaivi and Radhe Shyam in 2021. She is also set to make her return to Telugu cinema with the remake of the Hindi film 2 States. In February 2022, she entered as a contestant in StarPlus’ Smart Jodi with her husband, Himalaya Dasani. In 2023, she made a cameo appearance in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, where she appeared with her first co-star Salman Khan. Her husband and son also made cameos alongside her.
Looking back, Bhagyashree’s career stands apart from many of her contemporaries. She experienced extraordinary success with her very first film, had Bollywood’s biggest directors lining up to sign her, yet willingly stepped away from the spotlight to build the life she wanted. It’s a choice that continues to make her journey one of the most unique stories in Indian film industry.
Today’s song is from her 1992 film Tyagi. She is not the main heroine of the film, that role is taken up by Jaya Prada. Her role is of the heroine of the second generation like Jaya Bhaduri’s role in Samadhi (1972) or that of Poonam Dhillon in Dard (1981). Below is a short synopsis of Tyagi based on Wikipedia entry.
Tyagi is the story of Shankar Dayal (Rajinikanth), a kind-hearted and selfless man who dedicates his life to looking after his younger brothers. He sacrifices his own happiness so that they can have a better future. However, after discovering their true nature, Shankar is forced to make some difficult decisions that test his love, loyalty, and sense of justice.
Shankar is the eldest son of Chaudhary Ganga Prasad Dayal (Kader Khan). From a young age, he puts his brothers, Shakti (Shakti Kapoor) and Prem (Gulshan Grover), before himself. To pay for their education in the city, he mortgages his land and valuables, even though his father strongly disagrees with his decision.
Later, Shakti lands in serious trouble involving Sujata (Sujata Mehta). Determined to protect his family from disgrace, Shankar steps in and convinces Sujata to withdraw her complaint. She eventually marries Shakti, and the couple, along with Prem, move to Bombay to start a new life.
In Bombay, Shakti and Prem become involved with the powerful smuggler Dabla (Prem Chopra). Believing they can outsmart him, the brothers cheat him, but their actions have dangerous consequences. When Dabla’s associate comes looking for revenge, Shankar takes responsibility for what happened in order to save his brothers. As a result, he is sentenced to life in prison, leaving behind his wife Parvati (Jaya Prada), their newborn son, and his ageing father.
After serving several years in prison, Shankar is released for good behaviour. When he returns home, he discovers that everything has changed. His family home has been sold by Shakti, his father has passed away, and Parvati and their son are nowhere to be found.
His search eventually leads him to Bombay, where he is reunited with Parvati. She reveals the heartbreaking truth about their son, whose life was tragically lost after an incident involving Prem. Devastated by the loss and betrayed by the brothers he sacrificed everything for, Shankar is overcome with anger and wants revenge. However, Sujata pleads with him to let go of his hatred.
Years later, Shankar is once again called upon to protect the very family that has wronged him. This time, the focus is on Aarti (Bhagyashree), Shakti’s grown-up daughter, who has fallen in love with Amar (Himalaya Dasani), the son of tailor Nandlal (Tiku Talsania). As new dangers emerge and Dabla returns seeking revenge, Shankar risks everything to save his family, proving that despite all the pain he has endured, his sense of duty and compassion remain stronger than ever.
Tyagi (1992)is a film directed and produced by K. C. Bokadia. It stars Rajinikanth and Jaya Prada in the lead roles. Prem Chopra, Gulshan Grover, Shakti Kapoor, Kader Khan, Bhagyashree, and Himalaya Dassani play supporting roles. The film is a remake of the 1989 Kannada film Deva. Rajinikanth enacted the same role also in its Tamil remake of the same story, Dharma Durai (1991). Today’s song, mujhko to kuchh kuchh hotaa hai is sung by Kumar Sanu and Asha Bhosle, who sing for Himalaya Dasani and Bhagyashree respectively. The song is sort of day-dream or fantasy song fantasized by the character played by Bhagyashree.
