‘Shubh Kaamna’ (1983) was produced by VV Sastry and was directed by K Viswanath. The cast included Rakesh Roshan, Rati Agnihotri, Utpal Dutt, Sudhakar, Kiran Vairale, Dinesh Thakur, Asrani, Sujit Kumar, Satyen Kappu, Gireesh, Paintal, Shammi, Geetha, Ashalata, Renuka etc. Vinod Mehra and Om Prakash made special appearances in the film. The film was a remake of director, K Vishwanath’s Telugu film, ‘Subhalekha’ (1982).
Director, K Viswanath, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner (2016) and the maker of his cult status Telugu film, ‘Sankarabharanam’ (1980) has been mainly known to make Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films with serious social messages through light humour. As a result, most of his 50 odd films he has directed in his lifetime have been box office success. He debuted in Hindi film as director with the box office superhit, ‘Sargam’ (1979) which was also the debut film for Jaya Prada. When Rakesh Roshan produced his film ‘Kaam Chor’ (1982) under his banner Film Kraft, he entrusted K Viswanath to direct the film which became a box office hit. Thereafter, he directed 8 other Hindi films which included ‘Jaag Utha Insaan’ (1984), ‘Sanjog’ (1985), ‘Sur Sangam’ (1985), ‘Eeshwar’ (1989), ‘Sangeet’ (1992) etc.
‘Shubh Kaamna’ (1983) deals with the dignity of labour and the evils of dowry system in a humorous way without sounding too preachy. The director leaves for the audience to decipher social messages behind the humor. The protagonist, a waiter in a starred hotel lives a struggling but principled life. However, he has a habit of meddling in other’s affairs with good intentions to support social causes. However, very often, this lands him trouble as well for those to whom he is helping. He meddles in the marriage of a college lecturer whose marriage proposals gets rejected due to dowry demand. He tries to help her to find a suitable groom without consulting her as well as the groom. The protagonist gets sacked from his job as a waiter and the prospective bride gets sacked from her job in the college as lecturer. But all these factors bring both of them together with their common ideology but the inter-class conflict (The boy belongs to labor class and the girl belongs to educated white collar class) creates problems from their parents. However, ultimately, they overcome obstacles.
The story of the film in details is as under:
Ratan (Rakesh Rishan) works as a waiter at a starred hotel. He is a talented, intuitive and compassionate person. These qualities sometime lead him to meddle in others’ affairs which lands him in trouble. On a visit to his native place to see his sick grandmother, Ratan promises to admit his recently widowed cousin, Nirmala (Renuka) in his city college where Sujata (Rati Agnohotri) works as a lecturer. However, the college administration refuses to admit Nirmala unless some donation to the college is paid. Ratan regards the payment of donation as a kind of corruption and insists on her admission without donation. In a shuffle with the security staff of the college, Ratan creates the commotion which attract the college’s Principal (Dinesh Thakur) who authorizes admission without donation.
Sujata is a post-graduate and works in a college as a lecturer. She lives with her middle class parents (Sujit Kumar and Ashalata) and her younger sister, Viji (Kiran Vairale). During the pre-engagement discussion for Sujata’s proposed marriage with Guan Shankar (Girish), the elder son of a wealthy and greedy Dayashankar Pandey (Utpal Dutt), the later demands a hefty dowry which Sujata objects. She rejects the marriage proposal which angers groom’s father. Ratan, who has come with making arrangements for refreshment for the occasion, hears the heated conversations about dowry and feels angry towards Dayashankar because he has also passed some derogatory comments that Sujata can get the likes of waiter and the rickshaw puller as a groom without dowry.
Soon, there is a felicitation arranged for Dayashankar for conferring some award for him during which Ratan insults him in front of a large gathering. This enrages Dayashankar who terminates the services of Sujata as a lecturer in the college owned by him. Ratan gets beaten by the goons of Dayashankar and lands in hospital besides losing his job as a waiter in the hotel. Both Sujata and Ratan feel bad about each other as they both are now unemployed. Ratan assures Sujata that he would arrange to get her a job with Mehra (Vinod Mehra) in his company whom he knows as his regular hotel customer.
Sujata’s friendship with Ratan is not liked by her parents as they feel that even her younger sister, Viji’s prospects of marriage will be affected. Sujata walks out of her house to avoid the anxieties of her parents about her relationship with Ratan which she regards him just a friend helping another friend whose ideologies about social evils match. Ratan, on his part assures Sujata’s parents that he would ensure that Sujata gets married to a boy of her equal status without paying any dowry. Ratan and Sujata will have to wait for Mehra’s return from foreign trip for a job during which they get a temporary accommodation at a lawyer’s house (Om Prakash).
In the meanwhile, Sujata’s younger sister, Viji decides to teach Dayashankar a lesson. His second son, Badrishankar (Sudhakar) has got attracted to Viji during the marriage discussion of his elder brother with Sujata. Viji woos Badrishankar who is enamored by her. He pressurizes his father for an alliance with Viji who maintains an impression of an obedient girl. With Badrishankar threatening his father that he would commit suicide and also invoke the legal provisions for taking dowry which will put him jail, Dayashankar agrees to get Badrishankar married to Viji and they get married.
On return from his foreign trip, Mehra employs Sujata as a marketing executive in the company while Ratan has taken in the same company’s canteen, a waiter’s job. With so much help Ratan has given to Sujata with his pleasing attitude, Sujata has fallen in love with Ratan which he himself is unaware of her feelings towards him. Ratan has even arranged to canvas for her marriage alliance with Mehra and he is successful. A wedding date is also fixed for which he is busy making arrangements for the wedding.
On the wedding day, Sujata’s parents have reached the venue. In the climax, Sujata has already told Mehra that she is in love with Ratan but she is afraid to reveal him as he has got the mesmerizing power to convince her that Mehra is more suitable groom for her than himself. So, Mehra decided to break the ice with the revelation to Ratan that Sujata loves him in the presence of his grandmother to whom Mehra has invited. Ratan and Sujata get married. In the marriage, Dayashankar’s elder son also joins after he secretly marries Ratan’s widowed cousin, Nirmala.
The film had five songs written by Anjaan which were set to music by RD Burman. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, “Tumko Hai Pyaar Maana” rendered by SP Balasubramaniam and Asha Bhosle who sings for Sudhakar and Kiran Vairale, respectively. Sudhakar has made his debut in Telugu film, ‘Subhalekha’ (1982) which was remade in Hindi film under discussion. After gaining a wide recognition of his role as Murali in this Telugu film, he adopted his screen name of ‘Subhalekha Sudhakar’. He is the brother-in-law of playback singer, SP Balasubramaniam whose sister, playback singer, SP Sailaja got married to him in 1989.
The context of the song is that Badrishankar (Sudhakar) is enamored by Viji (Kiran Vairale) when he accompanied his elder brother for the marriage alliance with Sujata (Rati Agnihotri). Though the marriage alliance did not materialize due to dowry demanded by Dayashankar (Utpal Dutt), Viji has decided to teach a lesson to Dayashankar by wooing his younger son, Badrishankar. This song is a part of her wooing Badrishankar who reciprocates her feelings. The song is preceded by and interspersed with the brief scenes with Ratan (Rakesh Roshan) and Sujata (Rati Agnihotri) in their temporary rental house who seem to indulge in some banters.
